This thread is full of the same excuse making that always comes up with this subject. The correct way to approach this is a simple question:
If they accomplished what they set out to accomplish, what would that look like?
That's the crime they were aiming for, how close they come to succeeding is irrelevant. Conspiracy, abetting, etc. are about what the goal was, not the success rate.
If someone shoots at you and misses, none of us would say "That wasn't attempted murder because the shooter is a bad shot. It's only attempted murder if the shooter is well-trained." Instead, if they had been successful, what would that look like?
