New York police will use drones to monitor backyard parties this weekend, spurring privacy concerns

NEW YORK (AP) — Those attending outdoor parties or barbecues in New York City this weekend may notice an uninvited guest looming over their festivities: a police surveillance drone.

“If a caller states there’s a large crowd, a large party in a backyard, we’re going to be utilizing our assets to go up and go check on the party,” Kaz Daughtry, the assistant NYPD Commissioner, said at a press conference.

“It’s a troubling announcement and it flies in the face of the POST Act,” said Daniel Schwarz, a privacy and technology strategist at the New York Civil Liberties Union, referring to a 2020 city law that requires the NYPD to disclose its surveillance tactics. “Deploying drones in this way is a sci-fi inspired scenario.”

How long before some start knocking the drones out ? With a large gathering, it may be hard to discern who took the 'shot'

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. What would qualify as a large crowd to make this justified?

Makes more sense then having to send out a police officer or city enforcement worker out there. Rather have a drone fly over head for a minute then have to answer the door for a bylaw officer

If you shoot down the pig drone you’ll be charged with murdering a police officer and the cops will have a funeral for the fallen drone complete with a procession of dozens of police cars and they’ll transport a flag draped box of busted ass drone parts to the cemetery.

A police officer would need a warrant or probable cause to enter a home or the backyard. With drone tech they don't, and now can monitor countless people without ever having probable cause.

It's a bylaw issue, isn't it? Jim has a party, his Karen neighbor calls the cops. Bylaw officer is dispatched. Instead of that now a drone is quickly dispatched to determine if it's worth it. Not sure what the easement rules are regarding flight space in NY, but I'm assuming as long as it's over x amount of feet police drones fall under the same purview as private crafts

Furthermore, bylaw officers are allowed to enter your backyard without warrent. At least in many municipalities

In New York Shitty you aren't allowed to have large BBQ parties? Seriously??? What the Hell?

The Government actually has a legal right to tell you how many people you can have over to your personal house to bbq up some burgers? Are they going to make sure you don't drink too many beers also?

Starts opening up a lot of interesting and weird questions doesnt it

From the above quote it sounds like all it takes is for someone to call up the authorities and say there is a large gathering / party / barbecue for the NYPD to justify snooping on the celebration. I was not aware that just having a party allowed the cops to monitor your gathering. I presumed there needed to be a violation of some noise ordinance, other ordinance or disturbance for the authorities to come investigate.

Technically nyc bans block parties on labor day weekend and July 4th. So I would imagine there is a person limit on that. Considering the drone method they are talking about falls in labor day weekend, that's the purview
