Talent wise, MacKinnon is always gonna be the Lemieux to Connor's Gretzky. But when they talk legacy, this series is gonna be a hot topic if McDavid never gets a Ring, or even if he only gets one. Full credit to the Panthers for tightening back up and closing things out though. If the Oilers had managed to convert some of their chances in the first 3 games this is a much different series.
I would say that the Oilers outplayed the Panthers in 4/7 games. There were 2 games that the Oilers outplayed the Panthers in that they lost (Games 1 and 3) and 1 game that the Panthers outplayed Edmonton in that they lost (Game 5)
Panthers won Game 1 with goaltending and the Oilers won Game 5 with special teams. Those are their x-factors so it seems reasonable that they both won a game with them.
Looking back, the series seemed to hinge on a couple things:
1) The Oilers could've won Game 3, but they had a terrible stretch in the 2nd period allowing 3 goals in just over 6 minutes. Their morale seemed low for a bit after they continued to fail to convert so many opportunities and Skinner allowed a bad goal and that really cost them. It was too little too late when they rallied in the 3rd.
2) Oilers outplayed the Panthers in 3/3 home games and the Panthers outplayed the Oilers in 3/4 home games. Game 7 was in Florida and home ice advantage very well could've decided the series. So this result could have come down to the Oilers' miserable start to the regular season, which I guess is fair.
