I have no idea how they keep doing it, but I'm not complaining.
Crosby is one of the greatest of all time. His skating, possession and elusive edgework down low is probably the greatest of that style in History. He doesn't get lumped in with the speedsters as a "great skater" like Orr, McDavid, Bure types. Its a different animal altogether.
Bobby Orr used to be the bar. Nobody could pass in skating. Sure some were slightly faster, but until McDavid, the closest we saw was Bure.
Coffey had a smoother glide north south skate than Orr. Laterally or in a phone booth he could not touch Orr.
Bobby wasn't just fast going north-south, he could literally jump 10 feet east-west in the blink of an eye at high speed.
That is the biggest difference between him and the Coffey's and Fedorov's imo.
The only player that really stands out in my mind that had that same kind of east-west change over was Bure but his backward skating was inferior and his top speed lower. And Orr had probably the smallest turning radius I have ever seen, able to change gears and accelerate through openings with astonishing ease.
McDavid is close to Orr, perhaps better I agree. I'd have to see a prime Orr on Modern skates to decide. My god would that be something.
Skates NOW are way better than they were even in 2000. 2000 skates were like the Olympics all star team skates compared to the 70's AHL in terms of skates. The difference in skates now compared to then is equal to the differences in old leather goalie pads that soak up water compared to modern lightweight pads.
McDavid is unmatched for explosiveness, precision, and economy of motion, but when it comes to edges and sudden changes of direction, nobody tops Sid.
Sid has heaps of those highlights where he dominates down low (he's so good at it). "Superstar Grinder", and yeah he demonstrates much better Mohawks consistently. It's a puck protection style facilitated by powerful skating.
I don't think he will be able to keep it up much longer, but its been a hell of a ride. Historically, forwards tend to fall off a cliff at a certain age. A few elite players remain elite past that age and modern surgeries and training helps, but then have a steep fall right around age 36.
I can count on 1 hand how many forwards stayed elite past the age of 36 in the last 3 decades, and it wasn't for long and then one year it was like they drove off a cliff or just became an average 2nd/3rd liner for a few years.
But man, he puts the work in. Crosby lives here in Halifax and puts on a Summer camp every year here. Its invite only, usually for Halifax or Nova Scotia born folks and run by Crosby, Marchand and Mackinnon. Those guys go full tilt hardcore practicing like its game 7 of the playoffs just trying to get better at everything in the middle of summer before their teams camps. Their latest young invitee was a little known 4th round pick named Drake Batherson. Batherson is soaking up their training like a sponge and is currently sitting at over a point per game pace in Ottawa this year lol.
This camp is so hardcore that Taylor Hall, who was invited one year, complained like a bitch about it and left after a few days. "Why are they trying so hard?? its just summer practice jeez"
