Economy New York leaders sign open letter to Amazon, asking it to reconsiders the canceled HQ2 in Queens

Because she's not wrong. She did a good thing.

People who actually work should be happy and appreciative.

Wait wait wait. I’m supporting socialism cause I don’t agree with a wannabe socialist?

Under socialism those people would do the same work except not get paid the 100k a year amazon offered...probably more like $100 a year

You’re taking me for a loop here or what?

They just exposed themselves as probably the largest spy operation ever conducted on American soil.

These idiots want to invite them when they should be rounding up every last one and prosecuting them.

What? But I though that was great news and a victory to New Yorkers how come now they want Amazon there????

Oh lord, were you with AOC in thinking that a tax incentive was money they can now spend? They didn't gain 3 billion from Amazon leaving, they lost 27 billion.
"Tax incentive"

Man, those neolibs sure do dick yall down easy.

No, letting people keep more of the money they earn is not socialism.

And if NY taxes and fees and regulation related costs weren't so high they wouldn't need to give tax breaks and carve outs to anyone to attract business and jobs.

So basically, fuck all those New Yorkers whose taxes are going right into Amazon's pocket? I thought you were defending the tax payers? What happened?

Hey, stupid, tax incentive is not a spending bill. This is really not difficult to understand. NY now gets $0 instead of $27 billion.

So Amazon can use public goods and services for free, but every other New Yorker has to pay?

You're kinda starting to sound like a far left beta cuck to me. Mr. Shapiro would be disappoint.

If you are a watch maker and selling a watch for $100 and another watch maker makes an identical watch and has it for sale for $105 and then they see me shopping for a watch and the guy selling it for $105 says, "I will discount my watch and sell it to you for $80", that is not the watch maker losing money. he is still making money but choosing to make less to gain the $80 he otherwise would not have got.

Amazon estimates of contribution to NYC tax base was 10's of Billions of dollars. To get those 10's of Billions NYC said we will give you back $3B over time from your own money, to use for land and other needs.

NYC does not get the 10's of billions and they did not save $3B by driving Amazon away. They lost on both cases. The only argument you can make is maybe they make it up elsewhere with other companies.

If you're legitimately mentally deficient, sorry in advance, but I'd like to know how you've decided paying $27 billion = "free". Are you imagining Jeff Bezos is going to collect section 8 housing benefits and food stamps or use up their sweet public school system?
{<doc}

If it was a handout, Amazon wouldn't have decided against it and state leaders wouldn't be begging them to reconsider. The company is not collecting "public goods and services", the city was counting on them to provide them for the people who do until the socialists chased them away, and now they get nothing.

Well first of all if we were talking about a pure subsidy or grant that did not need to be paid back I would agree with you. That would be where the City and State of New York just hand money they have on hand to Amazon or transfer it over time from taxpayers. And I do think there is a piece of the deal that is like that, and so in principle I oppose it. However the bulk of the deal is a tax break which is not the same thing. That is where they would normally charge you X amount but instead you pay Y or possibly zero for some period of time. Then after that you pay more or even full freight.

What you need to understand is that right now Amazon is paying zero, related to this new HQ, to the City and State of New York. If they decide to set up shop then they will bring a bunch of jobs, many of them high paying, with taxable income and sales taxes from workers spending money in New York. I imagine that DeBlasio and Cuomo are banking on the revenue Amazon brings for these and other sources being greater than any discounts or money they get to setup shop.

I think it's reasonable to criticize the details of the deal. But if you are not going to give Amazon good reason to come and put up with all the hassles of doing business in New York then...

Ahh the ol' "trust us just gives us billions and you'll make many more billions you just gotta believe!!!!!"

Btw if Amazon wasn't getting free money they would just open up shop in the place that charges the least taxes.

Yep. The typical bait n switch that companies pull. Then they decide they need more tax breaks and threaten to leave. The very same thing they did to Seattle.

It's the neoliberal playbook of corporate welfare.

One of the laws of being a corporation: make as much profit as possible.

Not kidding.

Um, they are moving it somewhere that will tax them less. So now NY has freed up all that money to spend on other stuff, amirite?
