I'm on day 9 and I'm getting vibes that feel like they don't think I'm learning fast enough.

The lady that's helping to show me the ropes is nice to me but I can tell she doesn't like repeating herself. Every time I ask a question, she starts her answer with, "like I said earlier..."

I still don't understand most of what's going on though. I might be fucked if I can't start learning faster.

What do, bros?

She shouldn’t have to repeat it. Do your homework. Take notes. Review your notes. Learn. Add value.

But seriously, those situations can be humbling. Without knowing more about your job, best you can do is your best to stay calm, have a good attitude, and be patient with yourself IMO. People whose job it is to train new hires should also have patience, though(being its an inherent part of job).

New hires generally have to !earn a great deal of info and procedure in a very short time. For any job with even a little bit of complexity, its not reasonable to think someone is going to have everything down, after doing it once(taking notes or not). Good trainers also add value by being patient, and possessing good communication skills.

That’s absurd. I have trained numerous people in my line of work and you always have to repeat things many times before people really understand what they are doing.

Maybe one or two people in my time have picked up everything immediately.

It's not her job to train me though. This is a management position and I'm taking over a new department. She was just nice enough to go over the specific procedures with me but it's way more complex than I expected.

You used the word "humbling" and that's exactly it.

I think maybe I did such a good job of selling myself in the interview, that my boss thought I'd just be able to catch on super quick.

As others have said, take some notes. I don't mind training people in general, but if I'm going over a ton of stuff and they are just sitting there watching or not taking notes I get a bit annoyed.

It's better to say "could you wait while I take notes of this?" rather than not say anything and have to constantly ask later to go over the same things you've already done.

Also they should know you aren't going to get everything immediatley, but like I said earlier (see what I did there? ;) ) take notes and use them. I don't mind going over the same thing with someone later if they took notes and need clarification.

I'm barely doing anything in my tech job for the past month. My replacement will only start in two weeks even if I initially applied to quit at the end of August. I need at least three weeks to train him, and I probably need to extend until January of next year. I may encounter TS' difficulty in my next job. 🙃
