New Jason Mamoa action movie Braven called a throwback to 90s action films, 71% on RT

I just got tipped off about this earlier today. It's currently sitting at a 71% on RT, with critics saying things like:

For anyone looking for a shot of vengeance adrenaline while waiting for "John Wick 3" to come down the pike, "Braven" will probably fit the bill.

Director Lin Oeding's stunt background serves him well; the stripped-down action, fights and stunt work here feel like the real deal instead of effects-heavy marvels of editing.

To put it simply and gratefully: "Braven" is the sort of unpretentious yet thoroughly professional popcorn entertainment that brings out the best in everybody involved.

At least one writer is hailing it as a throw-back to 90s-style action.

According to what I've read, it just came out today and it's getting a limited theatrical release as well as a same-day VOD release.

The trailer doesn't totally wow me it but it at least looks like something I'd be down to watch.

I like this because Jill Wagner is in this. Bout time I see her in something besides Wipeout

Zero interest in watching any of his movies. Aquaman should have been a white guy with blonde hair and no tattoos.

Well, can't be worse than The Bad Bunch.

Roman Reigns is getting a lot of movie roles.

So you're not going to watch any Jason Mamoa movies becuase in a totally unrelated series of films he got cast?

Is it just me, or are you actually the asshole in this scenario?

Okay.

Okay.
Jason seems like an asshole. Not wanting to watch his movies doesn't make me an asshole. Why u mad?

Indeed.

Well, I can get down with the idea of an actor being a dick. But why Jason Mamoa?
He seemed like an asshole even before the recent me-too quote of him making some stupid comment about raping his co-stars in some premium cable TV show.

Are you pro-MeToo?
I am anti-celebs saying stupid shit to act kewl.

The other day in the local news, a woman gov't employee filed a complaint about some state lawmaker kissing her on the cheek instead of handshake 3 yrs ago. Not a boob grab or butt grab or pussy grab or raunchy comment. Cheek kiss that she could have dodged.

Not sure what any of this has to do with Jason Mamoa.

In fact most people who work with him say he is a great guy.....

That said, nothing he has done thus far suggests he is capabe of being a successful lead man.

mamoa is not a particularly great actor but the dude seems real chill. the hell you smoking

I like him but I do think he lacks a certain element of charisma when it comes to headlining a film. This might be just the kind of role where he will work as the lead though.

Aquaman seems destined to be a flop too, imo, which will further diminish his appeal.......kinda unfair really as that is more down to DC shitting the bed than anything.

This film Braven that we're talking about got a very small theatrical release but also a same-day VOD release. My guess is that this characterizes what's going to happen in his career in the future:

He'll continue to be offered supporting roles in major theatrical films and TV shows, and then will occasionally headline films that basically go straight-to-video.

He'll always be right to play a character like Khal Drogo or step in as the villain like he did in that Stallone movie Bullet to the Head. But he'll never be someone whose name can carry a film and sell tickets.
