New Jason Mamoa action movie Braven called a throwback to 90s action films, 71% on RT

This film Braven that we're talking about got a very small theatrical release but also a same-day VOD release. My guess is that this characterizes what's going to happen in his career in the future:

He'll continue to be offered supporting roles in major theatrical films and TV shows, and then will occasionally headline films that basically go straight-to-video.

He'll always be right to play a character like Khal Drogo or step in as the villain like he did in that Stallone movie Bullet to the Head. But he'll never be someone whose name can carry a film and sell tickets.

More than likely. Though could see him being a permanent straight-to-video type too, if his next couple of starring roles flop. A modern day Dolph Lundgren.

You think he would make a better antagonist or protagonist?

That's actually something I was thinking about earlier. I'm really not sure. He probably works equally well either as the villain or as a more complicated character like Drogo, who wasn't exactly a good guy or a bad guy.

I think that for him to work as a protagonist, he needs to play characters who are the good guy of the story, but they're characters with an edge. He wouldn't be right to play Captain America, but he could play, say, a CIA agent who's been betrayed by the agency and is looking for payback. Then he just runs around being angry and kicking ass the whole movie.

cool, 90s and 80s were top as far as action movies are concerned. 70s were good too.

Remember the days when he had short hair and no beard.

Just watched Brazen, pretty good movie. Momoa will probably unfortunately sell-out and do shit movies to keep the $$$ rolling in though

Only a CIA agent who's assignment is like Fiji or Tonga. It probably be a comedy movie.

He is like The Rock. He can be leading man in comedies, but needs to cut his hair and beard.

I always prefer Hollywood stays true to the source material rather than putting their douchebag "creative touches" on everything. Look at all the garbage superhero and video game movie adaptations.

He has some acting chops, he did good on the tv series Red Road but I don't see him being successful outside of action movies or tough guy roles.

Finally got around to this one last night. I actually thought it was pretty cool!

Nothing groundbreaking, but a pretty enjoyable and atmospheric action movie that is better than the trailer indicates.

Thanks to MoviePass I would guess I've seen somewhere between 30 and 40 new films this year and, by and large, I haven't been particularly impressed. But this one was a pleasant surprise.

If I were making a Top 10 list for the first five months of the year this one would go on it. A solid 7.5.

I saw it a while back. It was entertaining, by no means a masterpiece but it was fun.

I thought it had a cool vibe. The snowy mountain setting was cool. The father sub-plot brought some emotion into it. There were also some pretty creative action beats.

The movie actually seemed to me like someone watched Cliffhanger and wanted to remake it but wanted to it on a much more realistic level. The basic plots of the two films share a lot of similiarities.

The snow skis and setting makes me think it'll kind of like Die Hard 2-esque.

Nah, not really.

As I was just saying to Protectandserve, it's a lot more like a grounded, realistic version of Cliffhanger.

all of the low test soylent soyboy film critics are going to scream that its filled with misogyny and that its a bad thing

i'm thinking of renting this because it is only 99 cents on amazon digital

EDIT:JUST RENTED IT WATCHING IT LATER TODAY.
