Solid win for Messenbrink but Caliendo kind of got hosed with that incidental headbutt in the first period. Not sure how else they could have handled it since it didn't appear to be on purpose (though Messenbrink didn't try to avoid it either). But Caliendo clearly got his bell rung and I'm sure that affected him for the rest of the match.
Caliendo has been my favorite Hawk for a couple of years now, but he hasn’t had much for Messenbrink the last couple of years. He’s closed the gap the last couple of matches, but more so defensively.

I’d love to see him drop to 157 next season. Supposedly he certified at 157 this season thinking Teemer may need to bump to 165. I think he’d give Kasak way more of a go than Messenbrink, and that would make room for Arnold at 174 and Kennedy at 165.

I don’t think it’s the biggest upset in NCAA history, but it’s sure up there. I don’t think anything will top Owings over Gable.

It’s debatable but def up there with gable and Lee/ramos

Up there, I just don’t think it stacks up. Dan Gable never lost in high school or college. Steveson lost in high school and college and isn’t even the first returning Olympic gold medalist to lose in college.

Lee getting pinned was devastating, but I think it falls short of both.

Oh yeah, Caliendo probably would have lost anyway but there's always a chance and it sucks he got caught like that in the starting seconds of his biggest match in the spotlight. The way he drops, it really looks like a flash KO that should have gotten concussion protocol instead of just 2 minutes injury time, and Burroughs and DC seemed to think so as well.

Stoked for Buchanan. Dreadful reffing all around tonight. Overall, they did themselves no favors with new fans tonight, aside from the dramatic finish at the end. Hats off to Hendrickson.
Buchanan has probablyt the highest mat IQ I saw all tournament -- both from his win over Ferrari and his win over Barr in the finals; excellent mat awareness and strategy. I'm happy for the kid.

Yeah I was so damn confused on what was going on. I feel Mesenbrink would've won, but I would've liked a proper match.

Showing how long it's been since I actively followed wrestling:

Didn't realize TDs are 3pts now...lol

In your defense, that's only been the rule starting this past season so less than a year since it's been in effect. They also changed near falls so they're worth 2-4 points based on the count. 2 count = 2 points, 3 count = 3 points, 4 count = 4 points.

Escapes still worth a point and reversals = 2 points.

I still don't really know... the dude gets injured so Mesenbrink gets bottom position? What?

Lmao I don't get it either. But the announcers were saying (as they themselves were figuring it out), that since it was ruled regular injury time, the offending wrestler (since it wasn't intentional) gets choice of position I guess because he would have scored a TD otherwise. But yeah, I'm not sure WTF that rule came from lol.

Do you feel these are good changes? When I looked up the scoring change it said it was to encourage aggression. Initial thought is I like it being worth more than a reversal now. Might make for quicker tech falls now too?

Oh yeah, it makes scoring a lot quicker now. My son is going into his 3rd wrestling season and he started his first year under the old scoring. With the new scoring, there's more TFs. Previously it was TD + four count NF = 5 points. Now it's worth 7, so if you do that twice in a match, you're only 1 point away from TF. We've seen a lot of TFs happen in the first period or early in the second, whereas you used to have to beat the shit out of the other kid into the 3rd for TF.

Personally I like it. Makes it almost impossible to win the match without controlling the TDs. Also makes TD and let them back up more common among better kids.

Having flashbacks to the 5' 140 power lifter in our league who would score a million TDs on my 6'1 skinny ass then let me up in our dozen matches....

I finally started picking top position, at least I could hold him down decent enough and keep the score respectable...lol

We'd literally joke about it during our matches.
