Just watched Nolf / Imar final. Was Nolf hurt (I saw the knee wrap)? Imar has really had his number lately. Strange to see Nolf get dominated in the hand-fighting game (an area he excelled at in college). Martinez always had solid technique with top-notch strength & aggressiveness, but his technique, particularly the front headlock & underhook systems he uses, has really flourished in the past couple of years. I think he is a threat to both Burroughs and Dake for 74 kg.

Nolf got injured in the semis against Joseph.

He was limping pretty bad at the end of the match

So, are you guys excited Bo Nickal vs Gordon Ryan?

No. Not in the slightest. Nickal should either be focusing on wrestling or drop his 2020 run and go straight to mma. This half in half out is frustrating.

Im quite curious. It will show how a great wrestler that intelectually knows about subs but hasnt really had any deep training to deal with them will do.

Will Bo have a clue how to pass the guard? Will his instincts betray him exposing his back?

I think he gets subbed within 3 minutes, and only survives that long because he’ll be conservative and non-engaging on the ground. That said, I honestly believe Bo’s style will make for a phenomenal mma grappler and within just a couple years he’ll be able to hang with almost anyone on the ground in mma.

Could be a repeat of Weidman's breakout performances of 2009 with very little grappling training.

I remember a 25lbs lighter Downey won against an adcc medalist Rodriguez in wrestling...

Rinaldi killed with little experience as well
There's been a few pretty amazing performances from wrestlers with very little sub-grappling training. Olympian Avto Gogolishvili took blackbelt Jorge Santiago to a draw. Melchor Manibusan took bronze at an early ADCC giving Royler Gracie a tough match in the process. Olympian Talgat Ilyasov won an invitational in Abu Dhabi after mere months of dabbling. I wonder if these performances would be more common if more wrestlers tried grappling. Good for Bo for trying.

Why did Penn State forfeit 184 last night? Sure, their guy could have lost to #1, but as long as they didn't get pinned, they would be fine.

Wondering the same thing, went to the match last night and was pretty exciting, still can't understand why Penn State risked their streak by forfeiting that match.

You know, I never had an issue with his politics per say. It was how obnoxiously he tries to virtue signal and use them to claim superiority and not actually try to create change
I agree. I align pretty closely to some of his political beliefs (especially when it comes to wrestling). But, there have been times where I scratch my head because I feel like there is some conflicts of interest that he doesn't discuss.

These are topics that I have read within his mailbag:

- Congressional aide for former speaker Hastert: https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/16317
Was there a point during his time working with Hastert where he felt something was off? Or was he shocked by these revelations? He never really discussed this. But, he has mentioned Hastert a few times as being a bad apple for the sport. Did he feel that Hastert was a bad apple back when he was employed by Hastert?

- Lived in Hong Kong: http://intermatwrestle.com/articles/13431
With the pro-democracy protests going on in Hong Kong, I would have assumed he would touch upon it during his mailbag. After all, he does not shy away from discussing politics. Covering this story within his mailbag could certainly bring some interesting insight from an American that has lived there. Has he shied away from discussing this or is it just a coincidence? Would discussing this impact his job with UWW?

- Assault of Inna Trazhukova: https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/17049
Commentators after the '16 Olympics brought this up within the mailbag. Maybe I missed his article about this issue. Again, this would seem to be content that he would bring up in his opening essays (growth of women's sports within a patriarchal society). Would discussing this impact his job with UWW? Is Russia's wrestling bureaucracy influential in UWW's internal workings? Again, I think this would have been a great topic for him to discuss to Intermat's American audience.

As someone that does not get bothered by how he leans politically, I find it odd that he does not discuss the same issues for politics outside of the US.

Whether you agree or disagree with his politics, it's a shame that his mailbag is now behind a paywall.

There are only a handful of wrestling specific media outlets out there. Many are geared towards the rabid fans that need to know who the 3rd-string back up 133lbs at Northern Iowa is predicted to be; which state creates better high school wrestlers between Wisconsin and Minnesota; or who is the 92nd best wrestler in the current sophomore class.

Reading his pieces were a great way to feel caught up with the sport...for the semi-casual-semi-serious fan.

But, as a semi-casual-semi-serious fan, I can't justify paying to read his articles.

He also defended blatant UWW corruption. And before they hired them went after it

Question since I can't post a thread....When it comes to the international tournaments that aren't part of the Ranking Series, how do U.S. wrestlers decide which ones to go to? Also, how does USA Wrestling decide which wrestlers go? I've noticed at some tournaments they have American wrestlers that aren't the #1 or even #2 guy in their weight class for Team USA.
