I got drunk in a bar in Sioux Falls SD with an Indian once. He wasn't impressed with my 1/16 Cherokee heritage, but was a pretty decent fellow. I kept waiting for him to get drunk and quarrelsome, but it never happened.

Some tribes are really cool, some are kind of boring. The culture overall is awesome though. I really enjoy reading about the Battle of The Little Bighorn and how they hoodwinked Custer.

There's a great book out called Last Stand by Nathaniel Philbrick.

The book God is Red: a Native View of Religion by Vine Deloria Jr. was a really good read for me. Kind of about reconciling native religious beliefs with Christianity. When the book was written native Americans were still not legally permitted to practice their traditional religions in the US.

I'll add that I find the Hopi creation story especially interesting.

You really think folks in Guatemala run around in those outfits? They make nice pics just like NA's dressed up in traditional outfits for the camera's. That last pic of Tikal is interesting. I climbed Pyramid I shown in the pic as a kid. No one really knows what happened to the Maya. Internal strife, drought, who knows.

If you think Euro's did a number on NA's you should read what the Spaniards did to the Aztec and Inca's. Life for the Indian's in North America was a virtual party compared to the abuse the Spanish doled out. Oddly, even today Argentinians are considered a cut above because of the Spanish 'look' they have. Looking like an Indian holds you in lower esteem.

most native americans died due to diseases brought over from the europeans. just like 1/3 of the european population died during the black plague due to the diseases brought over from asia. i guess you can say that the europeans killed them, but it wasn't as if the europeans intentionally slaughtered them. i'm sure some europeans did, but the vast majority of them died because of diseases.

The Apache were never friends with the Spaniards, but they were strategically allied with them against Comanche, who were about to wipe them out via Genghis Khan-like tactics.

• They puzzlingly asked their Spanish enemies to convert them to Christianity out of nowhere. Spaniards were overjoyed and sent letters to Spain about what a miracle this was.

• The Apache did not, however, show up to be baptized or show any interest in it after that.

The Apache were basically using the Spanish to buffer themselves from annihilation. Their own tactics did not work well against the hit and run Commanche strikes, so they diverted their attention to the Spaniards. No one said they were friends.

Also, since Apache was a broad term for several, several different areas and tribes back then (admittedly), I don't know how one guy in here can claim all their history belongs to him/his ancestors and get offended when he hears something regarding some gigantic scattered history he didn't previously hear about and likely had nothing to do with his single tribe.

This isn't a secret...should be very clear to anyone reading my post. I'm distinguishing between the Europeans that came to North America from those that wiped out the natives in Central and South America...

True. But it's pretty amazing how they did it. Basically made their camp look like it was full of women, children and the elderly. When Custer came in all of the warriors surrounded him. Good strategy.
