Nate Diaz vs Takanori Gomi

I'm probably a revisionist. Which ones should I rewatch?

firstly, I'm def not singling you out...so don't take this the wrong way.

<------------- I think it more fair to lean towards that being a reasonably competitive fight than to say Gomi got "fucking smoked" by Penn.

IMHO, that loss is also less an indictment of Gomi and more a feather in Penn's cap. Penn did go on to tap Hughes a mere 3-4 months later...GOATs gonna GOAT! :)

referring to Gomi as "the most overrated fighter in history..." is also not helpful. those kinds of extreme and absolute statements are all too common around here (and in general) these days. someone else said "Gomi, like everyone else in Pride, fought a bunch of cans"...another who says Nate was never any good. these are either clueless n00bs or yet more unoriginal, unimaginative trolls seeking reaction (remember when trolls used to TRY? lol)

what happened to making a reasonable claim and supporting it with evidence/examples? how about just claiming Gomi was not the #1/2/whatever LW, listing guys that should be rated above him during his era, and explaining why they should be rated above him?

If someone like Gomi is having his standing in the sport being questioned, surely he deserves more than that?

The Pride LW tournament had 6 of the top 10 Lightweights (it had all the top 5 guys). The only ones missing from the Top 10 were Aurelio, Vitor Ribeiro, Guida and Sudo. Ribeiro and Aurelio were excluded because they lost recently to the top 5. Guida was fighting for a different org and only appeared in Pride part time. Sudo had to be replaced due to injury at the start of the GP. They included Pulver (who wasn't top 10) because of name value. The GP had 4 Japanese fighters, Pride would have been happy if any of them won, it wasn't set up for Gomi to win, but they were hoping a Japanese fighter would win. Sakurai had to beat the toughest guys Edwards and Hansen earning him the #1 rank in the process to advance. But then lost to Gomi in the finals which meant Gomi became the #1.

Guida didn't appear in pride part time, or ever.

Yeah, unfortunately its convoluted because we really only have that one tourney to reference ... so it goes into the realm of MMAth. I think Yves beats Gomi, I think Joachim beats Gomi ... but Pride was notorious for their matchmaking, especially when telling foreign fighters a few weeks out when their Japanese stars knew for months. There were a lot of better fighters who would have made weight and, IMO, beat Gomi in 05/06. Many of them not signed with Pride, and the few that were got steered clear.

Who are some of the " a lot of better fighters who would have made weight and beat Gomi in 05/06"? Even if you think he'd match up poorly against Edwards or say, Josh Thomson, you do realize he would be ranked ahead because he was on a much longer win streak than them which included victories over fighters who beat them (like Sakurai).

Just because he wasn't an unbeatable monster like Fedor, or Jones doesn't mean he didn't deserve his number one spot, nor does it mean he wasn't the best at the time. During the pride lightweight gp there couldn't have been any better proving ground to show the number one lightweight than that event.

In regards to his competition in the tournament, the Brazilians he beat weren't the best but Crusher was on a nice win streak, including a TKO over Shaolin and a victory over Yves Edwards (admittedly a draw with Uno broke up his winstreak between the Edwards and Shaolin) and I believe he was the Shooto champ (which would have been the most prestigious lightweight belt in MMA at the time). Sakurai was a successful welterweight moving down in weight and had some good wins leading up to the final, winning these fights at the time he won them was absolutely huge.

If you don't think Gomi was number one than who was? I'd certainly concede if Penn dropped back to 155 (or 160 in Pride) that he could've beaten him almost undoubtedly, but at the end of the GP I don't see how you can't concede Gomi was the best. Many arguments have been presented as to why he was the number 1 lightweight, and you've tried to discredit his accomplishments but haven't specifically listed who you think should have been ranked ahead of him.

I don't think Gomi is anywhere near the top of a lightweight GOAT list or anything but he did have his moment to shine.

On a roll now means lost 5 of your last 8 fucking hell TS use your brain.
Ill tell you who else is on a roll that Joe lauzon he is killing it right now.

I have watched the LW gp more times than I can remember and honestly no other gp compares Gomi was amazing and I cry everytime I see his shell fight in the UFC except the Griffin fight

I met Nate a few days after the Gomi fight, at the farmer's market in Santa Cruz.. He still had a black eye, and was with his Gf who was pretty.. I told him congrats on the win and how it was a great submission. He said thanks and was very Polite

I didn't say he was worst ever. Beating smaller guys half the time is not that impressive, sorry.
