BJJ - 1 Hour

Worked some options from butterfly to enter X-guard & then some sweeps from there depending on how the opponent reacts. Good stuff - should have tried to work it into rolling later, but for whatever reason didn't. Rolled decent today, used some things I've been working on to pass open guard, also still working on basic collar chokes, just tweaking details. It's coming together...

You'll goal in sparring should always be to try to apply what you just learned. Every night. You'll find you get a totally different feel for a series when you actually feel in and how an opponent actually defends

BJJ - 1 Hour

1 hour of sparring today, 6x6 minute rounds with 2 minutes between rounds. Rolled very good today, nice & relaxed, choked everybody. Felt good.

Today is my youngest daughter's 13th birthday...

Been doing a lot of work on the house & had workers here constantly. Got some free time today, so biked down to the gym to get a quick workout in. Bench felt good, so did a couple of extra sets after the AMRAP set at 185. With a little luck, I can make it to BJJ tonight.

Looks like the rest of the month is going to be pretty light in regards to work, and the bathroom remodel should be done in less than 2 weeks. So that's all good news for workout consistency. Starting next week I'm going to try to get out and throw at least 3x per week, this will give me a solid 9 weeks of prep leading up the Queen Mary Highland Games in Long Beach. During the week throwing sessions will be shorter so that I can squeeze them in easy. I'll be doing hammer every session & alternating weights & stones. On Sundays when I can get to the OC Highlanders practice I'll be able to work in WOB, HWFD, Heavy Hammer & some Caber.

In addition to throwing, I'll be attempting to lift 3x per week, and with the TJM programming I'm doing now, that puts me finishing the 8's next week, then skipping deload & doing the 5's the week of 12/22, 12/28 & 1/5. I'll then be in Hawaii for a week, and when I get back I have 3 weeks for the 3's phase, then a 1 week deload before the Queen Mary Games. Lines up perfect if I can stick to it. Of course I'll also still be hitting BJJ 2-3x a week...I might have to drink less whiskey to make this happen. At least in the mornings. During the week.

I would have thought whiskey was a required part of the training regimen for caber tossing.

BJJ - 1 Hour

Nice class tonight, ton of ppl there...picked up some nice details on passing when your opponent has a knee shield guard. Stomach was a little upset tonight, so didn't stay for any sparring.

Yep, Feb 14th. I'll be competing in the 40+ Masters Division this year. I put it off for a few years, but I'm looking forward to it now. It'll be nice to be able to throw a 42 instead of a 56.

BJJ - 1 Hour

I was the only guy that showed up for the 11am gi class today, so I got a 1 hour private with Ricardo, the 290-lb lead jiu-jitsu instructor at Kings MMA. Awesome. He asked what I wanted to go over, so we spent an hour going over side control. It was excellent.

Here are some things I want to remember:

From top:
- Once I get the nearside elbow cleared, get my knee/thigh almost under their shoulder a little bit - makes the control on the arm tighter.
- Keep my underhook on their far arm, keep my arm out, don't bring that arm back to try to block the hips. (something I was doing)
- If they get an underhook with their far arm, then immediately block the nearside hips and move my cross facing arm to the other side of their head. Block their head with my elbow.
- If they get a deep underhook & start to turn, whizzer that top arm & kimora grip my own wrist, and grab the back of their head & spin to side control on the other side, keeping the arm.

From bottom:
- If opponent has the elbow, bridge & punch your free arm across his head at a 45d angle to create space to get the elbow back. For this bridge, get on the side of your hip 1st, then get your outside foot outside of your hips and close to your butt for more leverage.
- from bottom, if you can get on your side, get your bottom shoulder "behind" the top one, makes it almost impossible to get flattened out. This is a Rickson trick...

Mounting:
- get both elbows high for the mount. If mounting with crossface, then drive the opposite arm really high when mounting. If hand is blocking nearside hip, sit & drive nearside elbow high with your hip. Switch farside elbow to under opponents arm so you can drive both elbows high to mount.

Going try to put myself in position to work these items next time I'm rolling.

Had a lot to do today so had to cut the workout short a bit. But glad I got it in. Realization week for the 8's phase next week. I'll be glad to be done with the high rep stuff.

BJJ - 1 Hour

1 Hour of straight sparring today. Rolled well today, it was a lot of fun. Babalu was training with us, but he got injured right before I was going to roll with him. Hopefully he recovers quickly. I did get to roll a couple of rounds with the coach of Church Boyz Wrestling, Jacob Harman today. Man that guy is one of the nicest, fun to work with people I've ever rolled with. And he's built like a rock lol. Good times!

Felt really swole after this workout. Pretty stoked that I get to start the 5's phase next week! Finally some reasonable rep ranges!! Wanted to throw today, but wasn't able to due to rain. Bummer. Working in Las Vegas tomorrow so won't be posting anything else until Thursday.

I was a little sore today from throwing yesterday - could really feel it in my abs. Squats were tough, my knee sounded like a breakfast cereal - snap, crackle, pop. I widened my stance slightly on the last 2 and tried to really focus on pushing my knees out & that seemed to help. Went home & iced & got some ibruprofen.

BJJ - 1 Hour

1 Hour of BJJ, worked on some details for armbar->omoplata->triangle combo. A friend of mine went with me - his 1st jiu-jitsu class, so I just rolled with him some after. Good times.

Left knee is hurting, might have to take it easy for a day or 2... icing it now.
