Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

Sinbi is awesome, but it's exactly what you don't want. I would pick a smaller gym with less people. If you want a place with cheaper accommodation, you might want to look into camps in Chiang mai, koh phangan, and Pai.
What is the problem with Sinbi? Everyone just says it is awesome!

I may have asked this before -- maybe even in this thread -- but I don't remember the answer. Why are so many people so dead set against training with other farangs? I can certainly understand why more experienced fighters and people who have trained in Thailand many times may want to get out of that environment (especially those who understand and speak some Thai), but I've personally seen people who are admittedly new to muay Thai saying that, on their very first trip abroad, do not want to train with other farang. Not saying that this is Luaks's situation as he didn't mention, but I've seen it more than once.

I think that there are quite a few benefits to training in a gym that caters to farang when you're new to the art and the country. But everyone needs to feel special, I guess.

It must suck to be a trainer in a BKK gym and have a brand new to Muay Thai/first time in Thailand farang come into the gym.

Seriously. Newbies are always seeking out the HARDEST of the HARDCORE GYMS in Thailand. I really don't get it. It's really not beneficial to anyone involved, especially these poor trainers.

This is true. There is no way you are going to rock up into a bangkok gym and start clinching and sparring with whoever you want.

haha ok thank you! and how about the other gyms i mentioned?

Jun should be fine but you are on Samui so you better learn how to use a motorbike or the place will be very expensive.

The other gyms are way too advanced for you. Try muaythailand.com

I see the appeal why people would want a less commercialized, more authentic environment to train in. There are some legit Thai gyms that are beginner friendly, but as others have mentioned, it wouldn't be good for the trainers or fighters in those gyms if they suddenly got a big flood of low level foreigners showing up.

Sumalee, Phuket. Quieter than Sinbi.

Quieter. Good trainers. Not too much around the gym though, even though the on-site accom is great,

I see the appeal but it's like... get over yourself. You know? Again, being a newcomer to the art and the country, training at a gym with a lot of other people in a similar situation will actually benefit you quite a bit.

As far as Sumalee goes, is that place still run by that old hag that used to work at Sinbi?

I haven't seen the following addressed in the thread. If I were to get placed in a job in Thailand where I'd have to keep the traditional Western work schedule (8-5 Monday-Friday), would I be able to find a gym to accommodate? There are opportunities in Thailand in my field, but if I wouldn't be able to train due to scheduling, then I wouldn't be as interested in going.

If you're in Bangkok, Petchyindee Academy and Rajadamnern Singha offer training sessions that accommodate working stiffs (who will make up the majority of the classes at that time). You won't be training with the pro fighters, but you will receive quality training with the pros' trainers for a premium price.

Hey folks!

Id like to bring up the Tiger, PTT, Maximum discussion again. I probably wanna spend a month in Phuket to do Muay Thai and a little BJJ, so those are the 3 that Im considering. Ive never done BJJ and only been to maybe 6 or 7 Muay Thai sessions, although Im planning on going to Muay Thai pretty much every day in Bangkok in January.

The thing is, doing research in this thread. All I could gather was both Tiger and PTT might fool you with the accomodation, some people lately think that Tiger sucks and there doesnt seem to be too much info about Maximum anywhere at all.

Id actually prefer to have a western feeling with lots of internationals and beginners around.

Tiger still has the same crappy muay thai. BJJ I dunno.

PTT requires you to do GI BJJ so you will have to bring your own or buy one there.

Maximum does both I think.

If you decide to do BJJ in Bangkok I advise you do it at a BJJ school and your Muay Thai at a muay thai school. PTT or Maximum would be good for you. Or you could just pick a muay thai gym and motorbike it to one of those gyms and try out BJJ. It takes a long time to get accustomed to so if you have never done it, don't put it as your top priority unless you are dedicated.

hey guys just finalizing my trip to sitsongpeenong in phuket for a few weeks beginning at the end of December. The gym accommodation looks pretty fairly priced, but wondering if anyone else has trained there or close by and gotten cheaper accomadation?

Any other tips or info regarding the gym would be much appreciated. This is my first muay thai camp and first trip on my own

I'm not exactly an expert, I've only been doing MT 10 months or so, been in Patong for about 12 days. If you want a western feel then go to Maximum, it is a quality state of the art gym. Very clean, new kit etc.

That being said, from what I've heard most of the well known gyms will be full of westerners. I have trained at Patong Stadium Gym too, that is full of Ozzies.

Everyone I have spoken to has told me Tiger is shit and not to bother going there.

Someone told me not to book it all up front and I'd offer the same advice. I thought I was going to come out and train twice a day like a spartan, but that didn't quite happen. I come from the UK and coming from freezing weather and trying to do that volume of training was just not going to happen in the heat here.

There is accommodation everywhere. looking out the window now I can see a place that offers 650 baht a night and 2 at 800.

If I were you I wouldn't book up anything before coming, just turn up and find somewhere, then pay-as-you-train for the first week.

Edit - The only thing I have done like a Spartan is go through bar girls and massage girls. If you are that way inclined then be careful, I have spanked a grand already.

Hey guys just wondering if singpatong lets people train there if they are not a fighter yet? And how much per session or day?

They'll let you train but if you're a n00b they won't allow you take on the Singpatong/Sitnumnoi name when/if you fight. Not sure how much per session.
