Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

Hey everyone, so I will be spending two months in Bangkok starting in late march. I was just hoping for advice from some people that have trained at these particular gyms relatively recently.

A little background on me, I am an amateur mma fighter and just want to get some of the best training in as possible while I have the time to travel for a couple months. I want the gym with the best possible training and I also want to get several fights while im there so that's also a factor on my decision. I have read endless reviews and I believe these gyms make the most sense but I could be wrong so I'd like some of your guys opinions.

So far I've narrowed it down to 6 gyms but im not set at all, I am open to suggestions. I plan on going to drop in on the several gyms i decide are best before i sign up assuming that is possible. The gyms are kaewasamrit, Keatkhamtorn Gym, Luktupfah, Rachanon Gym, Sitsongpeenong Gym, Kiatphontip Gym. Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks!

There is no "best" training. Example keatkthamtorn is a clinch specialist. If clinch is yourweakness, it may well be best FOR YOU. however 1 hour twice a day clinching requires good neck strength so depending on the person you might be better off at another gym doing it once a day. Another example, sitmonchai specialise in hands and low kicks, poptheeratham both stances, sitsongpeenong in power and stamina less on technique. It's very individual. even accomodation and location may prove important for some.

i suggest you write up more than "best possible training" as IMO it doesn't exist as everyone is different. else you will get 30 different answers.
be
in anycase telling a gym you want to fight and they will give you special attention and really push you. that means 12 sessions a week + all the running sessions. be ready for it.

I find the less farang the better, more attention for me. if i was unsure about camps, i'd err on the side that is less busy for the period i'm staying.

^^ probably not helpful, meh

I think sinbi in phuket is still the sherdogger's choice although it's not in bkk.

Thanks! That all makes sense, i guess my question was more directed at just peoples experiences at those gyms. But thanks for the input i didn't think of it that way

FYI, F.A. Group is currently at capacity and is not accepting any more students/fighters at the moment.

really? Ive read that Bangkok was the best place to train and can fights easily. That's just what ive read though

Bangkok is the best place to train, but Phuket is the easiest place to get fights. It's because any slob can wail on a tuk-tuk driver for the right price in Phuket, but you actually need skills to be called up for a match in Bangkok. Generally speaking, at least.

If you want to be guaranteed a real fight at Bangla, insist on fighting a farang. There are plenty if tough Aussies and Brits training in Phuket.

I think that days of farrangs only fighting tuk tuk drivers at Bangla is coming to an end. Now there are so many camps in phuket all full of young farrang who want to fight so finding a good fight isn't much of a problem.

If you're not a full-time pro then the training in Phuket is just as good as you will get in Bangkok. If you stay long-term (2+ years) training then i think that you can out grow Phuket and that's when you need to make sure you're in Bangkok.

depends on your experince. IMO most experienced farang would do well to go to a gym with a LOT of clinching as "most" gyms outside bangkok neglect it. Clinching can be underestimated, it's a HUGE part of MT.
Selecting a gym based on your weakness is only one option.
I like the idea of gym hopping, week by week to find a trainer you click with.
Else do what most people go by, reputaion and reviews. Maybe try a few days at each gym if you have the time to travel between gyms.
And mention early that you want to fight for the gym, the trainers will get excited and your training will get upgraded, more time pad/clinching/sparring, 10+km runs in the morning and you will be pushed hard.

On another note, my friend was at KYN a few months back, he was clinching with one of the trainers while TWO other trainers was watching ringside giving critique, so sick.

That's exactly what im planning to do, visit all 4 of the ones i mentioned. Where is KYN? Maybe ill check it out also

I've made similar plans, which i never stick too :)
KYN is on an island near Phuket. Reviews on muaythailand.com rate the gym very highly indeed. Many saying the head trainer there is the most technical trainer they have worked with. I haven't been there myslef, but it has been recommended to me. My friend showed me some pics and said they were very impressive. Might be difficult for you to get to.
If it's less busy i might hit them up in a few months.

I prefer when gyms have a 2:1 or 3:1 student/trainer ratio. Else I sometimes end up doing privates which can be inconvinent.

Are any of you training over there affected by the political protests? My Thai friends are telling me to wait a month or two before heading over.

They're pretty much dying down from what I've heard; devolved into a music festival LOL. You figure it's calm enough that Rajadamnern Stadium is reopening this Sunday.

I think Ratcha is opening because most of the protesters moved to Lumpinee park.

hrrm....maybe I can consider bangkok as an option again.

I leave in 20 days and was pissed to learn that while Im there(next 3 months) Chiang mai has super bad pollution from all the burning. And BKK has these riots....Not sure if the south appeals to me as I'm more looking to rent a cheap apartment, eat tons of food and maybe find a pool/gym for days when I aint training.

Maybe look into Koh Phangan? Or find a place in Bangkok outside the main city area where the protests are taking place.
