Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

Depends on the gym you go to, but I have not done any running at all in Thailand. When you warm up, you either skip rope or use the stationary bikes if the gym has them. Running is optional and is done either before or after the training session. I have knee issues too and don't like to run either.

Awesome! This is different than the experience a friend of mine had so this is very encouraging to hear!

In Haad Rin, staying at a hostel and the Party here has been pretty crazy so far. So far I've been training at Arena Gym to pass the time. Program is pretty basic and not intense. Good to get a sweat on and hit pads, nothing more. Good for beginners as it's not strenuous. This gym is where people go to pass the time when they are recovering from being hungover like I am lol. Morning classes start at 11am haha. I also took a look at jungle gym. They have a 4pm beginners class that lasts and hour and a 2 hour advanced class from 5-7pm.

So far the full moon party has been pretty crazy, saw a couple having sex last night in the beach. Hot young girls everywhere.

Just gone done with the Full Moon party's 4 day binge drinking. Everyone is pretty much out here and it was pretty fun provided you hang out with the right people. I feel so dead.

Last night a guy brought a trashy Tila Tequila looking girl up to the room and I thought she was a hooker. Turns out from his friend that she wasn't, but she looked like one being rachet and all from South Korea. They ended up going somewhere else.

Arena Muay Thai is definitely a place to go if you are either a beginner or a piss head looking to get a workout after a night of drinking (me). The trainer was awesome and got me into the muay thai fight at the gym for free and got me a free beer. Unfortunately I didn't do so well in betting on one fight. Fights were good in the beginning, but got lopsided in the end:P

We need photos of the ratchet Korean chick LOL!

I didn't have time, it happened so fast lol.

Anyway, I have enough of partying for a while, I felt like fucking death for a few days.

Finally got to Sinbi last night at 9:30pm (fucking buses are always late especially public transportation) so I will have some time to get supplies and train today. Sharing a room with a Russian guy we seem to get along fine and just got my motorbike so will let you guys know how things go. Feeling better today, had to take diarreaha medicine and cough drops Monday Night lol.

Just booked my Thailand trip!!! So excited. Leaving on the 24th of Jul, should start training at Sinbi around the 26th. About to book Naiya Buree.

A couple of questions, guys.

1. What gear should I bring with me? Mouthguard, shinpads, shorts, shin pads, wraps, gloves. I kind of think being in Thailand is a good opportunity to stack up on new gear, so would it be a wise move not to bring any of my own gear and just buy everything new there and use that for training? If so, is there anything essential I should bring anyway?

2. Hopefully this isn't a silly question, but can I just get a cab from the airport to the hotel? Any scams I should be aware of? My GF went travelling to south east asia and told me about constantly being ripped off; how's this type of thing in Thailand?

3. I'll take my supplements/vitamins and my running shoes with me. Anything else I should take?

1. Bring lots of towels and underpants. It is a great opportunity to stock up on gear IF YOU need to. Make sure to compare prices and shop around. Make sure you bring enough shorts too.
2. When I arrived at the airport a taxi driver approached us and said 1500 to patong, then said he can do 1200 for us. He was very very pushy. Then we asked the lady at the desk and she said 800b. Tuk tuk drivers will scam you every chance they get. Always haggle prices, it's how it's done there, it's not being cheap.
Look for "local" resturants rather than "western" resturants that charge you X5 as much for same meals. No need to tip, it's not expected.
3. Protein powder? Fish oil?

I'll see you At Sinbi. this will be my 11th time there. I get to Thailand July 22, but will be in Bangkok at 96 Penang until the 27th. I'll start training at Sinbi the afternoon of the 27th.

Just ask any of the trainers who big Matt is, they'll introduce us.

As far as what gear to bring for training, I only bring running shoes, jump rope, small bag gloves, two or three training shorts, two sets of wraps, and mouth guard. There are 18oz sparring gloves at Sinbi that they make everyone wear while sparring. I normally buy a pair of Top King shins and some cheap Nationman anklets in Bangkok on my way through.

If you are spending a few days in Bangkok, I'd buy the equipment there. Prices in Phuket are much higher than Bangkok.

All cabs are scams in phuket. But skme are worse rhan others. When you arrive at the Phuket airport, ignore all of the car service touts and walk out the front door. Take a right and walk all the way down to the end of the sidewalk. There is a yellow taxi stand where you will get an ok price. Should be about 500-800 baht to Naiya Buri.

I have brought supplements before, but find it is a waste of space. I just buy a box of DeChamp electrolyte powde from the pharmacy. I'd rather eat some grilled chicken and sticky rice than chug down some postworkout recovery drink.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Just got to sinbi today.

I wasted a ton of bag space with supplements and all my gear. If you can afford it, just buy it there. You just need shinguards and 12oz for mittwork. At my last camp we just sparred with whatever lol. You can get shorts at the camp, if you buy 1 month at sinbi you get shorts and a shirt for free. You should bring your own stuff unless you plan to buy or if you don't want to waste bag space. Sinbi you kinda need your own equipment unlike other camps or you have to pay.

As for supplements bring your own, pre-workout (tons of caffeine) is recommended and a afterworkout shake. Whatever vitamins too, I think I went overboard this time though.

If you are flying in, you can get sinbi to send you a taxi driver or just go to the desk. I should be there until the 29th if things go well.

^this.
I left lots of supplements behind that I didn't use. Bring the bare minimum.

One thing that everyone should bring to Thailand is a dive shammy. It is a reusable towel that soaks up your sweat. Most trainers won't admit it, but they hate getting splashed with sweat while holding pads. Towel yourself off between the rounds.

Appreciate all the replies, thanks guys.

- Why lots of towels and how many is lots? Can I not just grab the ones in the hotel?

- I won't be going through Bangkok, so won't be able to get gear there. Any places in Phuket anyone can recommend that I can check out for gear? Sounds like I might need to bring my Fairtex shinpads and 12s.

- I'll portion my supplements and will only bring enough for the 2 weeks that I'll be there. Just taking some protein, hemp or fish oil and a multi-vitamin

- Thanks for the heads-up RE cab scams. Will try to locate the yellow cab stand mentioned. Also good to know a ballpark of a price considered reasonable to Niya buree; I'll be looking to pay 500-800.

I'll have to make sure I take it fairly easy between now and my departure; the last thing I wanna do is get injured before my trip. WIll probably stop all sparring and just do drills, some pads and cardio.

Towels are worthless, dive shammy is what you want.

Make sure your supplements are in the original sealed container, or customs might confiscate them.

I personally use a microfiber towel, you can find it in any sporting goods store.

Im a sweat flinger, wasn't aware it offended people.

I didn't realize either until I started toweling off between rounds and a trainer thanked me for it.

Sweat splashing in their face and mouth is nasty as shit. Especially when the person didn't shower before morning training. lol

If you're only going for 2 weeks then I wouldn't bother taking it easy now. Ideally you want to hit the ground running. 2 of my mates made 23/24 sessions arriving on sunday morning training monday afternoon. They trained through (minor) injuries, just tell your trainers so they can work around them. For 4 weeks, I always had some injury or other, took some pain killers when needed, plenty of time to recover when I got back.
Some people recommend taking it easy first week, maybe if you're staying a few months. 2 weeks, train hard, don't waste time.

I had 7 towels, I only used once for each session before washing. Might look into the microfiber ones mentioned.

Yeah, keep doing pads and bag work, keep running also. It always improves your pad work when the trainers see you running before training. Does need to be far, just a few kilos and they will take you more serious.

I'm having that same problem here, thanks for the advice!
got in my mouth once. *puke* one guy was getting sweat in my eyes with every punch, got so bad, it affected my holding.
