Gym/Training Muay Thai Gym Q&A

Don't eat from the discount food bin at Tesco, got food poisoning this morning and threw up. Also got diarrhea. Good thing I have no roommie right now. I pretty much slept all day and I'm feeling better.

Thanks man, already took some Imodium though. Still feeling tired and have a hard time with solid food. Should I go to the hospital?

Ryukyu did you ever review 96 penang?

Training at Peenang is very up to you. Means they wont force you to make drills, no guided Sessions like in western gyms. If you are tired they just recommend you to watch their fighters training until you get your breath again. Gym is very very dirty, you do your roadwork in a shithole. Trainers are awesome though.

I'm paranoid about food hygene at the best of times (including here at home), so I'm worried about Thailand. Any tips for safe places to eat around Sinbi? :) I don't mind paying a little extra as long as it's clean and (ideally) tastes reasonably good.

After 10 trips to Thailand, I'm convinced eating street food is safer than eating at many restaurants.

I have a few less trips under my belt, but I have a sensitive stomach and I've only gotten sick in Thailand once, on my very first trip. I missed 4-5 days of training before I realized that I could just go to the pharmacy and ask for what I need.

I usually eat at restaurants, sometimes street vendors. I prefer restaurants. It seems completely random from what I hear. Just pray for the best and don't eat shit that are marked down.

Finally took a shit today after taking an imodium wednesday, feels good and I shouldn't have breathing problems tomorrow haha. Weather forecast is shit, dunno if I can go to Koh Phi Phi this weekend.

2 more weeks in Phuket and it's off to Chiang Mai, still debating on my hotel since I want a good location.

.

when you eat at street vendors you can see how clean everything is. in restaurants you cant.

but yeah its mostly random so keep your eyes open.

I like eating at food courts -- you can see the kitchen and chefs, plus you have mall custodial services taking care of things at the end of the day (that, and you can sneak a little bit of A/C for not much more baht/dish haha).

The problem with restaurants is they have a refrigerator. Thai people love to leave uncooked meat out on the counter all day. If they don't sell it all, then they stick it in the fridge for the next day. The street vendors don't have a fridge, so what ever isn't sold gets thrown away at the end of the day.

I have a few select restaurants that I eat at near the gym, I know the owners and trust that they are not being foolish.

I got really sick last summer from eating seafood on the Rawai seawall. I thought I was going to die...lol

Guys I have a stupid question: is it ok in Thailand to train in a gym with shorts from another gym ? What is the etiquette about that ?

I see that all the time and I have never observed any of the trainers being the least bit concerned about it.

in fact, trainers often wear shirts or shorts from other gyms (where, I assume, they trained before)

People do it all the time, just not from gyms right next to each other though.

Sounds like food poisoning is a rite of passage in Thailand. Bad thing is that it offsets the gains you've made in training:/

on the food poisoning front, I always travel with Imodium and some antibiotics. just in case.

my first trip to Thailand, I didn't have any issues. this last time I had one bad bout and I was pretty happy to have medicine on hand rather then have to go out to a pharmacy. it sounds minor, but when you are that sick, even a 10 minute round trip is daunting

I would also encourage people to check out Dukoral. You take it before your trip (so be organized) and it is supposed to help prevent traveler's diarrhea. I have used it in the past (not this past trip). it is hard to say from personal experience how well it really works. it is not a guarantee - but it does increase your chances of avoiding Thai tummy

I usually keep a bottle of Seirogan handy when I'm on the road. It's an old school Japanese stomach medicine that used to be issued to... the Imperial Army during... ummm... invasions LOL. Stinks like crazy but works great.

The first piece of advice I give people who want to go to Thailand. "Never trust a fart"

Hey guys,

Im looking to go to Thai Land next year with the wife. Im looking for a camp in a really nice and exotic part of Thai Land. As this will be our holiday as well as getting in training time.

Im thinking Phuket, and like the idea of the PBG camp as it one on one training. But will consider any other camps.

We would like to stay at nice hotel near the training camp, but also close enough to beech and shops.

If anyone can offer any recommendations, it would be really appreciated!

Thanks.
