I'll be there for 2 days. Later on the week.

Currently at fairtex bangplee. I've done one day so far. Easy day to ease into things. 5 3minute rounds on pads. Not over impressed with training so far. Not much structure. Hoping to watch a few fights at lumpini after afternoon session.

I'm only in bangkok for 2 and a half more days. Any suggestions things not to miss while here?

96 Penang if you don't mind the motorbike ride into the ghettos.

Lanna has absolutely no structure and Andy left a long time ago. Their equipment is complete shit. Don't stay at their accomodations. Review here.

Actionzone for very well-priced equipment (the BEST deals on Twins and Fairtex gear, plus they also carry Top King and Muay Thai brands); stop by MBK while you're in the neighborhood if you want to shop for, well, ANYTHING (the food court is bomb there too)! If you can squeeze in a trip to the Grand Palace and Wat Po, definitely stop by there as well (just don't let the scammers fool you into thinking either site is closed -- the entry ticket is also good for a few other sites as well; it'll be written on the ticket booth). Wat Arun is worth checking out too, especially if you were planning to take a boat ride on the Chao Phraya river anyway.

HAD MY FIRST MUAY THAI FIGHT!!

Hey guys, just to quickly say that I fought last Saturday and lost on points to a younger (17) more experienced Thai. One quick advice if you have never fought & want to test yourself..."LEARN THE CLINCH!" Till it's an addition to your stand-up. Of course you can have it easier and fight a Tut-Tut driver :D

I'm trying to decide on KC Muay Thai or Jun Muay Thai for a year-long stay. Anyone have an information on either of these two?

Don't know anything about KC, but many of my friends train at Jun...And are quite happy with their training there...It's just around the corner from where I'm currently at WMC Lamai.. I hear many good things that if I wasn't at WMC, I would be at Juns or Pinoys :P

Since you're going to be there for a year maybe try them both for a week or month then decide?

That's one of the reasons why I didn't fight in Thailand, I had very little clinch experience and felt it would make a big difference during a match.

Fairtex bangplee. Short review.
I stayed here for 4 days. Firstly anyone staying, just get a metered taxi. 250b from airport. Don't bother to use their transfer service.
Training starts at 7-9, 3-5. With breakfast, dinner at 9 and 5. So in reality you will train 7-8.30 and 3-4.30 to shower/dress etc before eating. All staff were friendly. Which ever trainer you have on day one will stay with you. 5 rings, 12 or so different style bags, some in better condition than others. There is a swimming pool and a weights gym that I didn't use. Imo everything, the gym, rooms were dirty. I can imagine the place being really nice when it was new, but the place isn't well maintained at all. The first room they put me in had a leaking AC so I had to switch to a room with bad wifi connection. I'm pretty sure the swimming pool attracts more mosquitoes. I must have ended up with 30+bites. This is after spening 20 mins each night mosquito hunting before sleeping. The rooms are gloomy, dark, no tv just beds, fridge, shower toliet and everything looks run down and dirty. On to the training. Before I start, other people staying told me how much they love it there and one guy said he's staying for 3 months cause he like it so much. Training for me was, run (sometimes) which is up and down the car park by myself. Skipping. 5 pad rounds. Then my trainer said its up to me what I want to do next and normally left. Once I told him I wanted to spar he looked annoyed. He gave me one pad round and told me to spar with one of the other people training but he wanted to do his pad rounds, so my trainer reluctantly spared 2 rounds and told me to do bags. As my trainer was a champion, he just spent the time we spared showboating, don't think I learned anything. I was fucked off at this point as he cut out my pad rounds to one. On my second last day, I gave him a small tip, not cause I was happy with him but cause I mostly always tip. I think it humbled him and he gave me a really good session on my last day. Which just shows to me how lazy he was rest of the week. He corrected me twice in 4 days, and helped me with my low kicks. So I guess it wasn't complete waste of time. I'm glad to be out of there tbh. More of a relief. 15% off at the shop for fairtex members. The shop wasn't well stocked at the time. Really nothing in medium. If the training was better, I could have lived with the dirt, mosquitos. I guess it just depends which trainer you get. I wouldn't go back. Especaily tthe prices they charge.

I can definatly see how some people would like it though, I highly recommend staying 1-2 days before committing.

Thanks for the review, not surprised, I've heard the same on Fairtax Pattaya too. If you are unsure about a gym's reputation, it's best not to book all at once. The only gyms I can recommend booking in advance based on really good consistent reviews are Sinbi, Santai, and Sitmonchai. If I missed any let us know.

Ok PSG patong stadium gym since I've had something to compare with.
7000b for twice training and accomodation. Location, beach 10-15 min walk. Junceylon same distance. Bangla rd same distance. 7-11 1 minute. Laudrette 1 minute. Resturants 1 minute. It's next door to patong boxing stadium. Massage 10 minute. Basically everything you need is walking distance. This is one of the main reasons I picked this gym. The accomodation is located in the shit part of patong where the locals live which I quite enjoyed. The rooms are a luxury, almost european hotel standard. When I was there it was a building site but it's all done up now with tv hot water showers fridge and it's clean. When I was there, there was 3 trainers and 4 people training. Earlier I said the matting is hard on your feet, I take it back, I just have shitty feet that blister easily. 2 other gyms use the same matting which is standard. When the classes where small, my trainer man gave me 3-4 pad rounds which were 10 minutes long, not a typo 10. He would often stop and correct me. My first day he walked me through the basics, starting with my stance, uppercuts, hooks, knees kicks. He made it his goal to get me kicking correctly, every session he kept working on it to get it right, he became more obsessed about it than me, well almost :) which I really appreciated. Sessions for me started with 10-15 mins skipping, stretching, wrap hands, then normally on to pads. I did shadow boxing rarely. After pad bag drills then situps. Sometimes bags, chinups, pressups. Basically structure for me at least was lacking but I didn't mind as 30-40 mins on pads mostly tired me out. My other friends said they had a lot of structure with their trainers. For the most part I was mostky with the same trainer but occationally when he was busy and another trainer caught me doing something wrong or looking a bit lost, they would call me over and help. If you are looking for group work, you're not getting it here, at least we didn't, maybe for bigger groups. The gym itself is quite small but it's big enough. 1 ring 8 bags. Lots of fans and mirrors. All bags are same type. The rooms are 3 mins away. The owner bow hand picked all the trainers there from PBG.
I really enjoyed me time at PSG. If I could change anything, I would have built the gym with open sides, it does get pretty hot but which I didn't mind. Guess the main difference why I enjoyed it so much was the trainers. Same reason I didn't like fairtex. I would still do 2 days before commiting, just incase you prefer bigger gyms a la sinbi.

My friend was at fairtex pattaya (for a visit) and said it was awesome but said the training is same at bangplee.
Yodsansklai is still there along with some others.

Just a little tip for anyone who's interested and heading into bangkok. If you are bring cash to exchange, checkout http://bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net/default.aspx there is a kasikorn at the airport underground which do not give you a "airport rate" No not exchange anywhere else at the airport. It's the green one next to the huge information desk.

Btw I decided not to go to lanna after death striker put me off :) thanks for that.
I didn't want to risk 2 bad gyms in a row. Especially because I'm only staying 2 weeks this time.

Okay change of plans for me, my mate has dropped out of the trip.

I'm still thinking of heading to Patong, as it looks like a cool place to visit. Am considering 2 weeks at Maximum fitness then 2 at Sinbi, if I can find affordable accomodation. Is it advisable to book up the first two weeks accommodation and training before I go?

Any advice for going alone? I haven't really been away by myself before so not sure if it's easy to meet people or not?

I'm here alone, I actually prefer it this way as last time I had to find/do stuff that suited everyone. You will also be more tempted to party when in a group. On meeting people, just depends who's there at the gym at the time. I wouldn't book anything in advance. Try a few sessions before commiting. Really, it's easy just to try for 1-2 days and move. Try PSG if you don't like maximum. They are 15 mins walk away. I heard good things about maximum. I'll always say this, I don't care how big/good/clean a gym is, it depends if you click with your trainer. Everything else is secondary.

Deathstriker any tips for things to see/ do in Chiang Mai?
