Mtg nerds get in here!

I scooped 3 foundations collector boxes when tcgplayer had a sale for about $179 I think. And I'm a Rudy patron so I can get foundations boxes from him for $118 I believe. I actually like the Jumpstart format for beginners and/or casuals like me and any friends I play with who don't have the history or experience with the game that I do.
I was actually pretty surprised by Foundations. I like to think it's their apology for M30. Jumpstart is super cool. I have had the same playgroup for about fifteen years. I recently played with another group who are super casual, so I scooped up a bunch of these and just shoved them together for the night. I love Magic. It's stuck with me since I was just a kid. Another childhood friend was the smart one. In 1998 he put all his cards in sleeves and binders (unheard of back then). Let's just say that he's done pretty well off it and has his own quasi-museum from the selling funds. I made a tessellation with beta Craw Wurms in art. I think those are like twenty a pop, now.

I read the Final Fantasy cards will be Standard rules eligible.

all the upcoming Universes Beyond sets will be standard legal. it’s fucking ridiculous. the Hasbro suits will ruin magic as long as it means dollar signs

Fuck this. I’m OK with SL/UB, but com’on.

sometimes. FNM at my lgs is pauper, which fuckin’ rules because it might be my favorite format, but i’ve felt so burnt out by the release schedule of the last few years that i’ve mostly just been hitting the prerelease events & some weekend drafts

the best part is wotc/hasbro couldn’t even secure the online rights to the marvel characters, so the standard legal Spider-Man set releasing later this fall won’t even be available on Arena or MTGO. absolute clown shoes

It's bad... And I just ordered a FInal Fantasy Collector box from Rudy for $740 and one from another store at the same time for $699... It's insane! I preordered a few months ago for $400 or $450. Final Fantasy is a big deal and although I really appreciate the IP and it can fit into Magic better than Spider-Man or walking dead or spung boj, I wish it didn't exist in magic.

Pauper is the shit. I generally play commander and got out of standard/legacy that I played for years. When they changed rotational sets I noped out. Commander, somewhat unfortunately, is the most fun format here.

The FF set is no joke in terms of power. I actually enjoy the crossovers a bit, depending on what they are. I’m no fan of Transformers or My Little Pony but I’m also no arbiter of fun. When LOTR came out I could barely contain myself.

What are you talking about.

Tempest through urzas block was peak magic.
Mirage and Tempest block was the golden age for all types of play, but Urza's Block / Combo winter was not a fun time for type 2 constructed tournaments.

Only positive memory of tournament play during saga block was force spiking a stroke of genius for infinite because mana burn was still a thing and he left none open. I still lost the next turn but it was a moral victory.

I saw there's a website with very long list of card artists who will sign your cards mailed to them for just a few bucks. One woman artist said just send to her without an email or asking where and limit 25 cards she'll sign. Never knew about this. I guess lots of people send their cards for artist autographs. I'm guessing the cards themselves indicate who the artist was.

Anyone play mtg arena? I know Whittaker and Barnett are big mtg nerds.

I started playing and collecting Magic cards in '95. I played for around six years and was heavily involved until high school, when I stopped all together. I still have my collection and I'm seriously thinking of getting back into it and am wondering what need be known to get back up to date.

There has probably been 40 sets released since I stopped playing so I know there will be many new abilities which I will familiarize myself with as I ease in but what are some staples of the current game?

What are the "game types", what are plainswalkers, what sets/cards should I look to buy to get the standard "lightning bolts" or "counter spells" that all players have in their decks now? What is the deal with the Modern Masters/Eternal Masters sets being expensive comparatively and what are some of the valuable cards of the last decade+? Is there a good magazine out there like what Scrye or Inquest used to be? What else should I know?

I bought a booster box of Khans of Tarkir because I read "fetchlands" are a popular thing like duelies used to be or still are, and I got a box of Fate Reforged because they were a package deal on ebay. I'm thinking of also buying a booster box of Innistrad because I saw there is an $80 card, Illiana something... what say you bro's?
Get your cards assessed, you might be sitting on some serious cash

I am, now. My old collection had some cards that have gone up to +/-$200 but my recent collection has well over $100k in value. I have a piece of power worth $2k+ and two sets of ten revised dual lands, couple cradles, a candelabra and more...

Hell ya man. My heart broke when I wandered into a card shop and saw the price tags on all these old cards I remember having back in that same era- late 90s, early 2000s. I doubt I had any first edition but god damn manawar elves were 120 bucks each. I had 8 I got bought for 10 bucks I think.

So true! It's difficult to pay some of the modern prices on these old cards due to paying <$10 back then for what's $500+ now. Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Arabian Nights, Antiquities and Legends were not available when I started and those are the most valuable today but there's plenty of opportunities to buy and retain or increase value still. In fact, I bought my first Alpha cards recently, 3 basic lands for about $15 a piece!

I've moved to buy reserve list singles or sealed products with some exposure to modern sets but also slow acquisition of older boxes and packs, like Visions, Legends, Weatherlight, Urza's, Alliances, The Dark, etc

Yeah, the bottom of the card lists the artist. I've never been a fan of signed cards, it defaces them in a way, but I am a fan of "artist proofs". Each artist gets something like 100 copies of each card their art is used for but the "artist proofs" don't have the same back that every Magic card has, it's blank white. Sometimes you can send an artist proof for the artist to do some kind of doodle on the back and sign which I love.

I have a Seb McKinnon "Vandalblast" and a Ron Spencer "Paralyze" proof in the collection, both signed.
