Denzel Washington in Talks to Join Director Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR Sequel Starring Paul Mescal

gladiator_2_denzel_washington-1024x538.jpg

Denzel Washington is in negotiations to reteam with Ridley Scott on the Gladiator sequel. The duo previously worked together on 2007 movie American Gangster.

The Paramount project is set to be a follow-up to Scott’s best picture-winning 2000 feature, which followed Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), a former general who is forced into being a common gladiator under the rule of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), a patricidal self-appointed emperor of Rome.

Washington would join Paul Mescal, who would lead the movie, and Barry Keoghan. According to a previous report, the sequel’s story will center on Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla and the nephew of Phoenix’s Commodus. Paramount has set a date of Nov. 22, 2024, for the sequel, which Scott has been developing for years.

David Scarpa, who worked with Scott on All the Money in the World and the duo’s upcoming Napoleon Bonaparte movie for Apple, is penning the script. Scott will also produce with Michael Pruss via Scott Free, and Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment.

Gladiator was a co-production with Universal, with that studio now having the option to co-produce the sequel once the project is packaged. At the time of the release, Gladiator grossed $460 million at the box office and earned 11 Oscar nominations, winning five statuettes, including best picture and best actor for Crowe.

Lance Reddick, The Wire and John Wick Star, Dies at 60

Lance Reddick, the actor who broke out with a complex, powerful performance as Lt. Cedric Daniels in the seminal HBO show The Wire, has died. He was 60.

The actor’s body was discovered in his Studio City home on Friday, TMZ reported. Reddick’s publicist Mia Hansen told The Hollywood Reporter that he died “suddenly … from natural causes” Friday morning.

Reddick had recently been promoting John Wick: Chapter 4, the latest installment of the Keanu Reeves franchise in which he played Charon, the hotel concierge at New York’s criminal underground hub, The Continental Hotel.

The actor was also known for his TV work on Fringe, Bosch and Lost. With a sonorous and memorable voice, Reddick also worked frequently as a voice actor on projects including The Vindicators, DuckTales, Rick and Morty and Castlevania.

Reddick had about a dozen credits under his belt when he went in to audition for The Wire, most notably the HBO series Oz. “I remember reading the script and thinking that I’d never read a pilot like this before. To this day, it’s the only pilot I’ve ever read that I thought, ‘I have to be on this show,’” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019.

He initially auditioned for Bunk Moreland, the character that ultimately went to Wendell Pierce, and was the runner-up to play Bubbles, who was portrayed by Andre Royo. Recalled the actor: “I didn’t even know what character I wanted to play because in the pilot script, the only character that’s obviously prominent is McNulty (Dominic West), and I knew that Bunk was his partner.”

After missing out on those two roles, he got another audition to read for Daniels, but the Wire team initially passed on him. Reddick moved on with his life, wondering where his next job would be, when he got a surprise page from his agent. Plans had changed, and he had been cast as Daniels. Said the actor: “It was the first time where something happened in my life where I was hoping I wasn’t dreaming.”

Reddick was 39 when The Wire premiered in June 2002. The drama from David Simon explored crime and corruption in Baltimore and though it was not a runaway hit while it aired, it is now considered one of the greatest television shows of all time.

The actor’s death comes ahead of the release of the fourth John Wick, which arrives March 24. Like others involved in the 2014 first film, Reddick had no idea it would be a runaway hit that would spawn multiple movies and spinoffs, including The Continental, featuring a younger version of his character played by Ayomide Adegun.

Reddick had several other projects already completed, including the John Wick spinoff The Ballerina, and 20th Century’s remake of White Men Can’t Jump, which arrives May 19. He had also completed work on the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Legendary Acquires Film and Television Rights to STREET FIGHTER

MSDSTFI_UV005.jpg

Legendary is ready to unleash a sonic boom, with the studio acquiring the film and TV rights to the classic beat-’em-up game Street Fighter. The studio will work with video game company Capcom on future projects.

Street Fighter is one of the more enduring fighting video game franchises of all time. It began life with the 1987 arcade game Street Fighter, and hit a high-water mark with Street Fighter II, the 1991 game that spawned countless special editions and remakes. In all, the franchise has sold 49 million units worldwide, with a new installment, Street Fighter 6, due out June 2.

It is known for characters such as Ryu, Ken, Chung-Li, Guile and M. Bison, each of whom have various moves (and sounds — such as “hadouken!”) that make them memorable.

Hollywood has made moves on Street Fighter in the past, with Universal releasing an ill-fated 1994 film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Col. Guile and featured a cast including Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and the late Raul Julia. More than a decade later, 20th Century Fox released Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009), which starred Kristin Kreuk in the title role. Like its predecessor, it was a commercial and critical bomb. An assortment of animated adaptations have also made their way to the screen.

Legendary, which has a film distribution deal with Sony, has Dune: Part Two due out Nov. 3. Its deal for Street Fighter comes as video game adaptations have found success in recent years, with Paramount’s Sonic films, Sony’s Uncharted and HBO’s The Last of Us all cutting through to various degrees. And on Friday, Universal will try its luck with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the first time in 30 years that gaming giant Nintendo has teamed with a Hollywood studio to put one of its prized properties on the big screen.

Michael Mann Eyeing HEAT 2 as His Next Directorial Film; Adam Driver in Talks to Play Young Neil McCauley

pp_heat_herobanner_628_737078c5.jpeg

It’s been nearly three decades since Michael Mann’s crime classic Heat hit theaters via Warner Bros, and it now feels like Mann and the studio are finally feeling more heat around the corner for a sequel. While rumors have been swirling for weeks, Deadline is hearing that Warner Bros is now in negotiations to come on to develop Heat 2, a sequel to the 1995 classic that Mann recently turned into a novel. The book, published in August, became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller.

On top of Warner Bros in talks to return, insiders add that Adam Driver, who recently starred in Mann’s Ferrari, is in discussions with Mann to play young Neil McCauley in the movie.

Sources say WB is in negotiations to fund the development of the project, and that as of now no partner is involved. Arnon Milchan’s New Regency co-financed the first film and insiders add if and when the project is in a good place to move forward, they would be given an opportunity to co-finance. As of now, Mann is the guiding force moving this project forward and things are headed in the right direction for it to find a home.

Heat 2 was penned by Mann and Meg Gardiner and is not a novelization of Mann’s film, rather it tells the story of everything that happens before and after to the principal characters. The book jumps between two time periods, the first following Chris Shiherlis as he tries to evade the LAPD and Detective Vincent Hanna following the bank robbery gone bad and moves forward into new territory in the tri-border zone and Southeast Asia. The second storyline takes readers back to Chicago in 1988 when McCauley, Shiherlis and their high-line crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the U.S.-Mexico border, and in Chicago. At the same time, Hanna is cutting his teeth as a rising star in the Chicago police department chasing an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.

The fallout from McCauley’s scores and Hanna’s pursuit cause unexpected repercussions in a parallel narrative.

Since its publication in August when it became one of the year’s biggest publications, Mann hinted he ultimately wanted to adapt the novel into a theatrical movie. At the time, however, he was starting production on Ferrari with Driver and all of his focus was on that pic. Even though he is still deep into post-production on Ferrari, things started taking shape at the top the year for Heat 2 to be Mann’s next feature film, one he has been passionate about making for nearly three decades.

Since the top of the year, rumors have been swirling over what talent would either return or which new actors would take on younger version of these roles that have since become iconic. From Al Pacino returning to play Hanna in present times to Ana de Armas playing McCauley’s love interest in the 1988 timeline, there are many hoping to join, but Driver is the one we hear is firmly attached.

The original 1995 pic starred Pacino, Robert De Niro as McCauley and Val Kilmer as Shiherlis. While it was a solid hit, it has since become a revered crime classic with a global following, and this development is sure to get fans excited.
