The Batman has cast another bad guy. Filmmaker Matt Reeves revealed Friday that John Turturro will join the film as Carmine Falcone, who in the comics is a major underworld figure. Tom Wilkinson previously played Falcone in Christopher Nolan' Batman Begins.

Turturro won an Emmy for Monk, and earned Golden Globe nominations for Quiz Show and The Night Of, which also earned him an Emmy nomination. Turturro has previously delved into the blockbuster realm, acting in four of Michael Bay's Transformers films as the eccentric Agent Simmons.

Reeves has assembled a sprawling cast for The Batman, which will be led by Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. Zoe Kravitz is set to play Catwoman, Paul Dano is playing Riddler and Colin Farrell is on board as Penguin. Channing Tatum and Roy Lee to Adapt Image Comics' THE MAXX

O9q9XDY.jpg

The Maxx, the cult comic created by Sam Kieth, is getting the screen treatment from Channing Tatum and Roy Lee. The two are teaming up to produce via their respective production companies. Tatum will produce via Free Association, along with principals Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan. Lee will produce via his Vertigo Entertainment. Kieth will also produce with partner Tal Vigderson.

The Maxx, created, written and illustrated by Kieth was released in the early 1990s heyday of Image Comics, the disruptive comic company created by hotshot artists Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane and Rob Liefeld, among others.

The original series followed the adventures of The Maxx, who appears in both the real world and an alternate reality, the Outback. In the real world, he is a homeless man living in a box but in the Outback, he is a powerful masked being who is the protector of the Jungle Queen. In the real world, the latter is a social worker named Julie Winters who frequently works to help the homeless man, unaware that the alternate reality exists and is exerting a dangerous influence on her life.

Kieth was the first artist on DC comic The Sandman, which launched the career of Neil Gaiman and became one of the most acclaimed comic books of all time. He also worked on Wolverine stories for Marvel Comics Presents before going on to create Maxx. The initial series ran for five years In 1995, attracting a hip audience thanks to the unique art and an envelope-pushing story that was at once trippy and grounded.

The comic inspired an audio drama and a 13-episode cartoon series on MTV, which cemented its cult status, going on to win an Annie award for best animated series. Kieth, who continues to work on DC and Marvel projects, recently revisited the character with a special collaboration with DC for Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams, a five-issue miniseries.

It is unclear if Free Association and Vertigo’s adaptation will be a series or feature. The producers are actively meeting with writers and filmmakers to find the right take for the material.

New PLANET OF THE APES Movie in the Works with Maze Runner Director Wes Ball

XfYow4z.jpg

The Apes are back. Fox has brought on Wes Ball, the filmmaker behind the popular Maze Runner film series, to develop and direct a new Planet of the Apes feature, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The move makes Apes one of the first historically significant Fox titles to get the redevelopment treatment since Disney’s acquisition of the storied studio.

The original Planet of the Apes film, based on a novel by French writer Pierre Boulle and starring Charlton Heston, centers on an astronaut who lands on a planet and discovers an advanced ape civilization ruling over primitive humans. In the final, infamous twist, he learns he is actually on Earth, which had suffered an apocalyptic nuclear war.

The movie was a commercial and critical hit upon its 1968 release and spawned numerous sequels and a TV series throughout the 1970s. In 2001, Tim Burton remade the movie as an action-adventure that failed to excite audiences. However, Fox found success again with a reboot trilogy that began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, an origin story chronicling how the primates took over that featured envelope-pushing motion-capture technology and a stirring performance by Andy Serkis as the Moses-like leader of the apes, Caesar.

It is unclear whether the latest Apes project is meant to be a new reboot or an extension of the previous film series.

Ball’s Maze Runner trilogy, set in its own dystopian future, grossed almost $1 billion worldwide while being produced on modest budgets. The filmmaker was due to tackle a pricey and special effects-heavy adaptation of Boom! Comics' Mouse Guard before that project was shelved by Disney earlier this year.

They are rebooting it, which I think is a terrible idea. There is nothing wrong with the franchise. Just build off of the established cannon.

Not yet clear if it's a reboot or a continuation of the last Apes trilogy.

Boardwalk Empire and The Irishman Actor Stephen Graham Joins VENOM Sequel

Stephen Graham is set to join Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams in Sony’s Venom 2, with Hardy returning as the titular anti-hero. Andy Serkis is set to direct, and Naomie Harris and Woody Harrelson are also on board. Sony had no comment on the casting.

The original film was a huge hit for the studio when it premiered in 2018, grossing $213 million at the domestic box office and a massive $856 million worldwide. It followed Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes host to the alien entity known as Venom.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, and it’s unknown who Graham will be playing in the sequel. Variety exclusively reported that Harris would be playing the villain Shriek, who’s also the romantic interest of Carnage (Harrelson), earlier this fall.

Sony recently dated an untitled Marvel sequel for October 2020, which some superhero enthusiasts are speculating is Venom 2. If that’s the case, it would debut in the same time of year as its predecessor.

Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal will return as producers, alongside Hutch Parker. Kelly Marcel is penning the script.

British actor Graham got his big break playing Al Capone in critically acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire, which aired from 2010 to 2014. Since then, he has stayed busy in both TV and film. His recent TV credits include FX’s Taboo and upcoming FX limited series A Christmas Carol, where he plays Jacob Marley. He’ll also appear in upcoming comedy Code 404. On the film side, he was most recently seen as gangster Tony Pro in Netflix’s The Irishman as well as Dick Jones in the Elton John biopic Rocketman.

Peter Sarsgaard Joins Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN Possibly Playing Two-Face

Gb7rwtW.jpg

Peter Sarsgaard is headed to Gotham City. The actor is joining The Batman, with filmmaker Matt Reeves sharing a photo of the actor Friday on Twitter, where he has been confirming other castings. Sources speculate Sarsgaard could be playing a corrupt cop named Wasserman or a district attorney. If he is indeed playing a district attorney, Sarsgaard's character would be one familiar to comic book fans: Harvey Dent, the D.A. who becomes the villain Two-Face.

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as playing Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin and John Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone. Jeffrey Wright will play Batman ally Commissioner Gordon, while Andy Serkis is appearing as his trusted butler, Alfred.

Sarsgaard came to prominence with 1999's Boys Don't Cry, and earned a Golden Globe nomination for 2003's Shattered Glass. He previously delved into the superhero genre with 2011's Green Lantern, and recently starred in Hulu's The Looming Tower.

The actor even has a Two-Face connection already. He is married to Maggie Gyllenhaal, who starred in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight as assistant district attorney Rachel Dawes, who had a romantic relationship with Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). Astute fans have noticed that she shared a photo of Sarsgaard on Instagram this week with a potential Two-Face tease. She captioned the photo, of her husband with his head half-shaved, "Half way through a shave."
