Jared Leto So Upset About JOKER Movie, Asked Warner Bros. to Kill It Early On

zLNc0jg.jpg

Just how unhappy was Jared Leto over Joker? As Todd Phillips’ dark take on the villain looks likely to gross more than $700 million worldwide, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Leto’s frustration that Warner Bros. was moving ahead with the Phillips project was so great early on that he tried to throttle the rival Joker in its cradle.

According to sources familiar with Leto’s behavior, when the Oscar-winning actor learned of the Phillips project, he not only complained bitterly to his agents at CAA, who also represent Phillips, but asked his music manager, Irving Azoff, to call the leader of Warners parent company (it’s unclear whether it was Time Warner’s Jeff Bewkes or AT&T’s Randall Stephenson, depending on the timing). The idea was to get Warners to kill the Phillips film.

A source in Leto’s camp denies that the actor made this request, and Azoff declined to comment. Azoff and Leto have since parted ways.

THR previously reported that the 47-year-old star, who played the grinning crime lord in 2016's Suicide Squad, thought Warners had strung him along with promises of his own Joker stand-alone film, only to greenlight the Phillips' version with Joaquin Phoenix instead. Ironically, Warners thought the Phillips project would be a small movie and, nervous about its dark tone, greenlighted it reluctantly with a small budget that some at the studio were hoping would discourage Phillips from making it.

Leto had put a lot of effort into his Suicide Squad version of the DC villain, with rotting teeth, bloodshot eyes and slicked-back neon green hair. He spent months getting into character and terrifying his castmateswith “gifts” such as a live rat to Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie, bullets to Deadshot actor Will Smith and a dead pig to the entire cast during rehearsal.

It turns out that the studio wasn’t thrilled with these efforts, says a source with knowledge of the situation. And it seems the director wasn’t that pleased with the resulting performance: In the final cut of David Ayer’s ensemble antihero movie, Leto’s Joker got only about 10 minutes of screen time. While promoting the project, Leto — who had been billed as a lead character — spoke to media about how much footage of his Joker had been cut.

“In his defense, it was never really his movie but his attempt to `invent’ a place for himself in it backfired,” says a source involved in the situation.

Leto's representative says the actor is still happily working with Warner Bros. and notes that he's currently shooting John Lee Hancock’s Little Things, starring alongside Rami Malek and Denzel Washington, there.

Meanwhile, Leto’s unhappiness over the Phillips project seems to have helped end an already strained relationship between Leto and CAA. Sources say the actor felt his agents should have told him about the Phillips project earlier and fought harder for his version of Joker. Sources say Leto told his agents that they should stop the rival project, arguing that he wasn’t being treated properly as an Oscar winner (for Dallas Buyers Club). But a person with first-hand knowledge of the situation contends that by then, Leto had burned through four different teams of agents at CAA and there was little love for the actor there.

Leto left CAA for rival WME over the summer. A source in Leto’s camp says the rocker-actor had been looking to make a switch and denies that the competing Joker movies factored into his decision.

At this point, sources say Leto’s days as the Joker likely are over. He will not reprise the role for Warners' upcoming DC movies Birds of Prey (a spinoff centered on Robbie's Harley Quinn) or in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, due out in 2021. Says one person involved in the situation: "How do you play the Joker you established following [Phoenix]? It kind of ends his Joker run.”

JOKER Passes Deadpool to Become Highest-Grossing R-rated Movie of All Time

dtYcNMP.jpg

Joker has laughed its way to a big record. The Warner Bros. film has become the top-grossing R-rated film of all time, not adjusted for inflation, with a global box office haul of $788.1 million. It is expected to cross $800 million Friday or Saturday.

Joker, from filmmaker Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix as the DC villain, has passed the superhero film Deadpool, which became a surprise hit in 2016 for Fox with $783 million in worldwide ticket sales. (Deadpool 2's earnings were roughly $738 million before a PG-13 cut of the 2018 film brought the movie's total grosses to $785 million.)

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds sent out a cheeky, congratulatory tweet on Friday morning.

To date, Joker has earned $258.6 in North America and $529.5 million internationally. It is is expected to ultimately take in close to $900 million globally, with some thinking it has a shot at approaching $1 billion. The film is an enormous win for Warner Bros., particularly considering it faced security concerns ahead of its release and that it is not a traditional comic book movie. Ultimately, Joker is expected to turn a profit north of $400 million. Village Roadshow and Bron each have a 25 percent stake in the film.

The new record for Joker puts it atop an R-rated all-time list that, in addition to Deadpool, includes 2003's The Matrix Reloaded ($738.6 million), 2017's It's ($697 million) and 2003's The Passion of the Christ ($622.3 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Game of Thrones Showrunner David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Exit Star Wars Trilogy

r9O4zD4.jpg

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have exited their planned Star Wars series over 18 months after Disney and Lucasfilm first announced they were joining.

"We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too," Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. "Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away."

The pair were set to write and produce the Dec. 16, 2022 Star Wars film, the first to come after this year's Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, as well as the rest of the titles in a new series. The series was set to stand separately from one that The Last Jedi filmmaker Rian Johnson is working on, as well as the so-called Skywalker Saga being helmed by J.J. Abrams.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy remarked, “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

The news comes a month after The Hollywood Reporter exclusively broke that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige was developing a Star Wars film, a move that drew speculation that perhaps this could be a testing ground for the Marvel Cinematic Universe architect to have a bigger role in a galaxy far, far away in the future. Earlier this month, Feige's resume got even bigger when he was upped to chief creative officer at Marvel, overseeing the creative direction of Marvel’s storytelling and content creation across mediums including publishing, film, TV and animation.

Meanwhile, Benioff and Weiss signed a five-year, $250 million overall deal with Netflix in August that was met with envy and a bit of head-scratching, as their commitment to Star Wars would have meant that their new content for Netflix may have taken a decade to come to fruition. The duo have been in high demand since completing Game of Thrones, which swept the Emmy Awards this year with 12 wins, including best drama, but received a divided response from critics and fans.

Landing Benioff and Weiss was considered a boon for Kennedy, who signed the creators to a trilogy back in February 2018 in the wake of a series of high-profile firings, including the June 2017 exit of Phil Lord and Chris Miller from Solo: A Star Wars Story and the September 2017 dismissal of Colin Trevorrow as director of Episode IX.

This got made? Cool, I remember seeing a short/teaser they did for it quite a while back. Stephen Amell's not the greatest actor but he seems like a good dude IRL. My interest is piqued.

ANT-MAN 3 Officially Underway as Peyton Reed Returns to Direct

bZjozVM.jpg

The Ant-Man corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue to be Peyton Reed’s Place. The director, who helmed 2015’s Ant-Man and 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, has signed on to helm a third Ant-Man movie, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Paul Rudd is expected to return as Scott Lang, the heist-hearting hero with the power of petiteness in the new installment. It would be Rudd's fifth time out as the character, barring any other surprise appearances. Plot details are being kept hidden in the Quantum Realm.

No release details have been confirmed but sources say the plan is to shoot at the end of 2020 or top of 2021 for a likely release in 2022. Sources say that sequels Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder will shoot before Ant-Man 3.

Much like his fellow Marvel cohorts Joe and Anthony Russo, Reed started off in the comedy worlds of TV and movies, making his feature directorial debut with cheerleading comedy Bring It On. Movies such as Down with Love, The Break-Up and Yes Man followed.

He was brought into the Marvel universe when, late in the movie’s development process, he replaced Edgar Wright to helm Ant-Man. The movie grossed $519.3 million. The sequel, which Reed was more involved with, grew to a $622.6 million gross.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE Officially Announced for April 8, 2022 Release

XQoy9BY.jpg

Sony has set a date for Miles Morales to websling back into theaters. The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will hit theaters April 8, 2022.

In addition to the Spider-Verse sequel date, Sony has moved back Vivo, an animated musical featuring songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda. It will now open April 16, 2021, back from its previous date of Nov. 6, 2020.

The original Spider-Verse won the Oscar for best animated feature, and was praised for its innovative animation style and inclusive storytelling. The film voice starred Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, a teenager who takes up the mantel of Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker. He ends up teaming up with a group of Spider-powered heroes (including a middle-aged Peter Parker from another dimension) in order to stop the Kingpin (Liev Schreiber). The voice cast also included Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali and Brian Tyree Henry and was produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who return for the sequel.

So far, the Spider-Verse sequel has the date to itself. For Sony, Spider-Man remains its most important IP. The live-action Spider-Man: Far From Home, which it produced with Marvel Studios, became Sony's highest grossing film over the summer with $1.13 billion globally. Sony also has a Venomsequel in the works with Tom Hardy, as well as another Spider-Man spinoff, Jared Leto's Morbius, coming up.

On the animation front, the studio is also keen on expanding. In December, The Hollywood Reporter reported that in addition to the Spider-Verse sequel, Sony is developing a female-centric spinoff.

Colin Farrell in Talks to Play Penguin, Andy Serkis in Talks to Play Alfred in THE BATMAN

The Batman has found its Penguin. Colin Farrell is in talks to play the DC villain, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Andy Serkis is going from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the world of DC, as the actor is in talks to join The Batman as the Dark Knight's butler Alfred Pennyworth, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The move will reteam Serkis with filmmaker Matt Reeves, who directed the actor in two Planet of the Apes movies. Serkis played the villain Klaue in 2018's Black Panther for Marvel Studios.

Filmmaker Matt Reeves is behind The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, with other actors including Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Batman ally Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.

The Penguin, also known as Oswald Cobblepot, first debuted in the comics in 1941's Detective Comics No. 58 and was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Gil Kane. He is known as a master manipulator and his penguin-like physique and waddle. While he favors using henchmen to do his bidding, when confronted one-on-one he's known for using his umbrella as a weapon.

Bruce Wayne’s faithful manservant — and Batman’s more-than-capable aide — Pennyworth debuted in 1943’s Batman No. 16, although he didn’t get his familiar name for 26 years; he was, originally, Alfred Beagle. No matter what name he went by, he’s been the sidekick responsible for keeping Batman alive for decades, being equally versed in manners of upper-class society and field medic techniques.

Trailer for Lovecraftian Sci-Fi Horror COLOR OUT OF SPACE Starring Nicolas Cage

I haven't read the story in at least a decade now, but I seem to remember thinking The Colour Out of Space was one of those things that only works on the page and would be pretty much unfilmable.

Fuck me.

I don't like what they are doing. I will probably skip this film until it is broadcast on the FX channel. I am holding out hope that they will bring Michael Keaton back to do a Batman Beyond film.
