Zoe Kravitz to Play Catwoman in Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN

E7fNB5D.jpg

Matt Reeves and Warner Bros.’ upcoming The Batman has found its Catwoman: Zoe Kravitz has nabbed the role of one of the highest-profile members of the Caped Crusader's rogue's gallery, according to several sources.

The decision came down over the weekend after a rigorous testing process that saw saw Ana de Armas, Ella Balinska, Eiza Gonzalez and Kravitz read with Robert Pattinson, who is set to play the Dark Knight. The testing process occurred over the first week of the month, and the four were then narrowed to two late last week.

Reeves is directing what is described as a grounded take with a large rogue’s gallery as the antagonists. Jeffrey Wright is already on board as Batman ally Commissioner Jim Gordon.

Catwoman is one of Batman’s classic foes who also happens to be one of his longest-lasting loves. A cat burglar whose weapon of choice is a whip, the antihero is the alter ego of Selina Kyle. She was a fixture on the 1960s Batman television show, on which she was played by Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether and Eartha Kitt. Michelle Pfeiffer portrayed the character in her most popular big-screen incarnation, 1992’s Batman Returns, while Halle Berry toplined a 2004 solo outing, which bombed at the box office. Anne Hathaway also played the character in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises.

Kravitz is already well-known at Warners, as she has appeared as Leta Lestrange in the studio’s Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts spinoffs. She also voiced the role of Catwoman in 2017’s The Batman Lego Movie. Kravitz recently co-starred on HBO’s Big Little Lies and is set to star in the small-screen version of High Fidelity, which is being made for Hulu.

Carnage Gets Company as VENOM Sequel Adds Second Marvel Villain in Shriek

epqOipn.jpg

It looks like Carnage will have company in Sony’s upcoming Venom sequel. The Marvel Comics character called Shriek has been incorporated into the plot of the Venom sequel (due in theaters on Oct. 2, 2020), according to two sources close to the project.

A Sony spokesman declined comment, citing the early-days status of the project, which won’t begin principle photography until early next year. The addition of Shriek is a logical choice considering the character’s history in the pages of Marvel Comics as the sonic-powered accomplice and romantic interest of serial killer Cletus Kasaday, aka Carnage, the monstrous archenemy of Venom.

The fan-favorite Carnage has been the presumptive primary villain for the Venomsequel since the first film arrived in theaters last October with a mid-credits preview scene that featured the uncredited Woody Harrelson as the menacing Kasaday.

Shriek has been closely associated with Carnage since her introduction in Spider-Man Unlimited No. 1 (May 1993) as part of the “Maximum Carnage” saga.

A drug dealer named Frances Barrison became the volatile Shriek after severe trauma allow her latent mutant powers to emerge. In the comics, those powers include sonic energy blasts, flight, and the ability to stir up dark and violent emotions in others.

The casting process is underway but so far the field of candidates for the Shriek role has been expanding, not narrowing. “Right now the role is not filled, the net is cast wide toward many kinds of actresses,” one source said, adding that the filmmakers are “looking mostly at unknowns right now.”

There Will Be Blood Actor Paul Dano to Play the Riddler in THE BATMAN

ymzcgPV.jpg

Filmmaker Matt Reeves has found his Riddler for The Batman. Paul Dano has signed on as the classic villain, Warner Bros. announced Thursday.

Dano's version of the character will be named Edward Nashton, the man who in the comics later goes by the name Edward Nygma and adopts the villainous persona. Frank Gorshin and John Astin played the villain in the 1960s TV series, while Jim Carrey played him in 1995's Batman Forever, directed by Joel Schumacher.

Robert Pattinson is starring in The Batman, with Zoe Kravitz set to play Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright on board as Batman ally Commissioner Gordon. Jonah Hill was at one point eyeing a role as either the Riddler or the Penguin, but the deal did not come to fruition. Reeves has said he plans to include a rogues gallery of Batman villains in the film.

Dano was recently nominated for an Emmy for his role in Escape at Dannemora. The actor directed, co-wrote and produced the critically acclaimed film Wildlife. His other film credits include Love and Mercy, Prisoners, 12 Years a Slave, There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine,Youth and Okja, among others.

Created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, the Riddler — aka Edward Nygma, or "E. Nigma" — is a supervillain who aims to challenge Batman in a battle of wits, leaving clues and riddles for the world's greatest detective to solve in order to catch him. Since debuting in 1948's Detective ComicsNo. 140, he's gone on to become one of the most high-profile Bat-villains, appearing in movies, cartoons and video games across the past seven decades, stretching his question mark gimmick as far as it could go and then some, including spending some years as a good guy when he realized it was just as much fun to solve crimes as it was to commit them.

Ben Affleck to Star in Tornado Drama FALLING TO EARTH for Bron Studios

sFgfWKh.jpg

Bron Studios is moving forward with a tornado drama based on Kate Southwood’s novel Falling to Earth, with Ben Affleck attached to star and Hillary Seitz on board to adapt.

The book, published in March 2013 by Europa Editions, is set in the small town of Marah, Illinois, starting with a day, March 18, 1925, that begins like any other. It doesn’t end like the rest, however, due to sudden tragedy when Marah is hit by the worst tornado in U.S. history, leaving the entire community leveled. Hundreds are dead, injured or homeless and all structures and homes are destroyed with one exception — Paul Graves and his family — who end the day with everything they had at the beginning, their home, business and children.

The story then follows the Graves family in the days and months that follow as they come to terms with their fate and the stark contrast of their neighbors. Per the debut novel’s description, "They watch helplessly as Marah tries to resurrect itself from the ruins and as their friends and neighbors begin to wonder, then resent, how one family, and only one, could be exempt from terrible misfortune. As the town begins to recover, the family miscalculates the growing hostility around them with tragic results."

Falling to Earth debuted to great acclaim and reviews from outlets like The New York Times, which described the work as "absolutely gorgeous," adding, "Southwood's beautifully constructed novel, so psychologically acute, is a meditation on loss in every sense." The author followed it up with 2017's Evensong: A Novel.

The film adaptation will be produced by Bron Studio's Aaron L. Gilbert, along with Affleck and Matt Damon's Pearl Street Films. Madison Ainley from Pearl Street will serve as executive producer, while Garrick Dion and Solome Williams will oversee development for Bron. Falling to Earth marks Affleck's second project for Bron, following The Way Back. That film, directed by Gavin O'Connor, was financed by Bron and is scheduled to hit theaters March 6, 2020, from Warner Bros.

There were whispers that Affleck would direct Falling to Earth, per multiple sources, but as of right now he is just attached to star as Paul Graves and his deal is not yet done. Affleck last appeared on screens in Netflix's Triple Frontier, and recently wrapped The Way Back and The Last Thing He Wanted. His last directorial effort was the 2016 film Live by Night and, prior to that, the Oscar-winning Argo in 2012. He is repped by WME and the law firm Ziffren Brittenham.

Seitz broke out with her script for Insomnia, which was helmed by Christopher Nolan and released in 2002. Her other credits include Eagle Eye and The Woman in Cabin 10. More recently, Seitz sold an untitled thriller pitch to Amazon Studios and is also at work for ABC on a project in collaboration with Griffin Dunne on Justice based on father Dominick Dunne's article Vanity Fair about his daughter's murder. Seitz is repped by 3 Arts Entertainment and the law firm Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

Bron is currently riding high off the smash success of Warner Bros.' Joker, which was executive produced by Gilbert and is part of his company's $100 million, six-picture slate financing deal with Warner Bros. Bron's next effort is the holiday release Bombshell, which stars Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron opposite Oscar nominee Margot Robbie.

Naomie Harris in Talks to Play Villain Shriek Opposite Tom Hardy in VENOM 2

uj5Sots.jpg

Tom Hardy's Venom will have his hands full in the sequel. Naomie Harris is in talks to play the villain Shriek in Venom 2.

The character rose to prominence in the 1990s during the big Spider-Man comic book event Maximum Carnage, which saw Spider-Man, Venom and an assortment of heroes go up against Carnage and a ragtag team of villains he'd assembled. Shriek is known for her sonic powers and was something of a love interest for Carnage.

Harris, who earned an Oscar nomination for Moonlight, next stars in the Thriller Black and Blue (Oct. 25) and will appear in the upcoming James Bond film, No Time to Die (April 8, 2020). The studio had no comment on her casting.

Andy Serkis is directing Venom 2, which in addition to Hardy has Michelle Williams back on the call sheet, as well as Woody Harrelson reprising his role as Venom villain Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage, whom he played in a last-minute cameo. Ruben Fleischer helmed 2018's Venom, which over-performed with $856 million at the global box office. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, and Hutch Parker are producing Venom 2 for Sony. Kelly Marcel wrote the script.

Robert Zemeckis in Talks to Direct Live-Action PINOCCHIO for Disney

IwuHpLB.jpg

Robert Zemeckis is in early talks to direct Disney’s live-action “Pinocchio.” Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz will produce through their company Depth of Field with Weitz penning the script. “Paddington” director Paul King had originally been tapped to direct but had to leave the project for unknown reasons at the beginning of the year.

David Heyman, who was on board to produce, is also no longer involved with the film. Though a deal hasn’t closed yet, Zemeckis has been eyeing the project since this summer. He was still, however, working on his current pic “The Witches” for Warner Bros. and didn’t want to commit to a new film until “The Witches” made more progress in production. With that film in post-production now, Zemeckis began turning his sights on his next project, with “Pinocchio” high on his list.

The famous director will now look to gear up the casting process, specifically trying to find his Geppetto. At one point, Tom Hanks was circling the role, but eventually passed. Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz are producing. King, Weitz and Simon Farnaby wrote the most recent draft.

The original animated movie tells the tale about a living puppet who, with the help of a cricket as his conscience, must prove himself worthy to become a real boy.

In recent years, Zemeckis has been more focused on adult-centered dramas like “Flight,” “Allied” and “Welcome to Marwen,” and less interested in the tentpoles that made him famous early in his career. Zemeckis has started to come back around on those family-friendly films like “Back to the Future,” having just finished Warner Bros.’ adaptation of “The Witches” starring Anne Hathaway.

Another Disney live-action cash grab.

Zemeckis should instead do a continuation of the Back to the Future series with new main characters.
