Movies Movie News and Notes

Warner Bros. announced Wednesday it is pushing back the film’s release from Jan. 31, 2025, to April 18, 2025. Mickey 17 will be released in Imax theaters globally.

I have high hopes for this film based on the talent involved. Yet, every single projection I have read predicts that it will bomb and WB stuck it in the January release death window.

... and now moving it to April to get IMAX screens? Has somebody there decided that this film should actually get a proper release?

kinda bizarre pivot. feel like we rarely see movies get upshifted from a January/February release date

feels like there must be a backstory, right?

to go from dumping the film in Jan to making a deal to get it on premium screens is just plain odd

Simon Kinberg to Write and Produce New STAR WARS Live-Action Movie Trilogy for Lucasfilm

Simon Kinberg is heading into hyperspace, signing an expansive deal to write and produce a Star Wars feature trilogy. Kinberg would spearhead the launching of a new saga in the beloved galaxy far, far away, and will write the scripts for what Lucasfilm hopes would chart a brand new path forward for the sci-fi space opera universe.

Lucasfilm topper Kathleen Kennedy will also produce the new trilogy.

The new story is not meant to be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, the name of the overall arc of the popular and pop culture-dominating Star Wars movies known as Episodes 1 through 9. The intent here is to have brand new characters and a new story, and not have it be a continuation, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. (Although that does not mean that some characters could not or would not pop up.)

Kinberg already has strong Star Wars ties. He co-created the animated series Star Wars: Rebels with Dave Filoni as well as Carrie Beck. The Emmy-nominated ran for four seasons, from 2014-18.

He also helped out on the relaunch of Star Wars after Disney bought Lucasfilm, acting as a consultant on 2015’s The Force Awakens.

Kinberg is an established presence in the genre space. He had a hand in the Fox X-Men movies, being one of the producers of Logan and the first two Deadpool movies, among many other creative duties. And he is about to go into production on Edgar Wright’s take on Stephen King tale The Running Man for Paramount.

The writer-producer is one of the busiest creatives in town, and is he’s helping to develop the rival Star Trek franchise for Paramount, a deal he stepped into this past spring. He was due to take on an active producing role on the franchise’s film side. Sources say he will maintain those duties, keeping one hand on a lightsaber and the other on a phaser.

Lucasfilm has tried to chart different paths forward before. Kennedy previously signed filmmaker Rian Johnson (Knives Out) to develop a trilogy, as well as Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. None of those came close to fruition, with the company facing occasional scrutiny over the years.

could be something as simple/stupid as a WB exec being like, “who the hell is this bong june hoe guy? sounds unAmerican—dump this brainy sci-fi nonsense in January!” until someone pulled them aside & told them it’s the director of Parasite

at a corporation run by legendary film magnate, 'The Zaz" ("the Flash is the greatest super-hero movie ever made")? preposterous! ;)

Tony Todd, an actor who starred in the Candyman and Final Destination horror franchises, has died. He was 69. He died Wednesday at his home in Marina del Rey after a long illness, his wife, Fatima, told The Hollywood Reporter.

“The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony, -Your Final Destination Family,” New Line Cinema, which produced the Final Destination franchise, wrote on Instagram.

Born on Dec. 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C., Todd went on to study for two years at the University of Connecticut before getting a scholarship for the Eugene O’Neill National Theatre Institute. His time there helped lay a foundation for his later stints at the then-Hartman Conservatory in Stamford, Connecticut, and the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island.

Todd made his film debut in 1986’s Sleepwalk, launching an acting career spanning more than 200 television and movie credits. His most notable role was in 1992’s Candyman, which saw him play the eponymous hook-wielding ghost. He later returned for 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, and appeared in the 2021 remake. Todd also took on the role of William Bludworth in 2000’s Final Destination, 2003’s Final Destination 2 and 2011’s Final Destination 5.

His other acting credits include 1990’s Night of the Living Dead, 1996’s The Rock, 1994’s The Crow, 2006’s Hatchet, 2007’s The Man from Earth, 2010’s Hatchet II, The Flash, 2015’s Frankenstein, 2018’s Hell Fest, 2018’s Requiem, 2022’s Hellblazers and 2024’s The Bunker. He also voiced Kurn on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Alpha Hirogen in Star Trek: Voyager. His IMDb profile also lists more than nine titles currently in post-production.

As someone who was in his last year of secondary school (high school for you gringos) when the original came out, of course my first thought was “Who are they going to get to play the Jessica Alba part?”

Devon Sawa's reaction to the news is pretty hilarious though (even if it does make me feel old AF too):
