CONSTANTINE Sequel in the Works with Keanu Reeves and Director Francis Lawrence Returning

After bringing back The Matrix last year, Warner Bros. is reviving yet another Keanu Reeves property. The studio is developing a sequel to 2005’s Constantine, the film based on the supernatural DC property, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The project is to reunite Reeves with director Francis Lawrence, who helmed the original. This time around, veteran scribe Akiva Goldsman will write the script. Goldsman will also produce via Weed Road Pictures, with J.J. Abrams producing via Bad Robot with Hannah Minghella. Deadline first reported the news.

Abrams has been developing a Constantine series for HBO Max, however it will not be moving forward at HBO Max. It’s possible it could find life elsewhere. The same is true of Madame X, another Abrams-produced DC project that will no longer have a home on HBO Max.

Under the newly merged company Warner Bros. Discovery, there has been a shift in strategy, with an emphasis on theatrical projects for DC characters. There has also been cost-cutting, with the pricey Abrams-produced Demimonde also not moving forward at HBO earlier in the summer.

Constantine earned $230 million globally and the character has been kept alive in the public consciousness. After Reeves’ iteration of the character, who in DC lore is an occult detective, the Matt Ryan played John Constantine in an NBC series, and later on The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow.

In the years since the first Constantine film, Reeves’ star power has only risen, with the actor juggling multiple franchises, including John Wick. The fourth installment bows in March.

Lawrence, meanwhile, has a packed schedule. He is currently filming The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and is also attached to direct the Netflix videogame adaptation Bioshock.

Sony Sets New KARATE KID Movie for Summer 2024, Pushes Back KRAVEN THE HUNTER and MADAME WEB

The Karate Kid franchise is getting new life in theaters. Sony’s Columbia Pictures has set a date for a Karate Kid film slated to open June 7, 2024. No filmmakers or other details were revealed, but it is described as “the return to the original Karate Kid franchise.”

The series launched in 1984 and spawned three sequels, as well as a 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith. The franchise found new relevancy thanks to Cobra Kai, the TV series currently streaming on Netflix and featuring original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka alongside younger actors. It is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

The studio also set a date for an untitled True Haunting film, said to be inspired by true events and directed by Gary Fleder. The Screen Gems horror film, about a couple moving into a haunted home, arrives Jan. 6, 2023. Meanwhile, Missing, the Screen Gems continuation of the Searching franchise, opens Feb. 24, 2023. It stars Storm Reid and Nia Long.

Sony made moves on a number of high-profile features as well. It pushed Adam Driver’s sci-fi movie 65 up one month to March 10, 2023. (The Columbia feature was previously at April 28, 2023, and hails from A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods).

It also delayed Columbia’s Kraven the Hunter, the Aaron Taylor-Johnson film centering on the Spider-Man antagonist. Kraven will now bow Oct. 6, 2023, back from Jan. 13, 2023. Fellow Columbia/Marvel title Madame Web has also been pushed moving to Feb. 16, 2024, from Oct. 6, 2023 (the date now occupied by Kraven). Dakota Johnson stars as the titular character.

Fucking awesome. Never understood how there was a backlash to Constantine when it came out. I loved it.
