Movie Marathons

I like Licence to Kill but it's not top three. I have From Russia with Love and View to a Kill ahead of it, maybe some more Connery ones as well.

Not sure about the order offhand but I approve of all Bond movies up to and including Goldeneye, and then I'd just pick a couple Daniel Craig ones to add.

View to a kill is interesting. I didn't hate it at all.

I noticed you had the way way back on the list. That was a really good movie.
sam Rockwell cured the kids autism.

Everything he's in with Arnold (Conan and Running Man if you want big roles) plus Gladiator, Quick and the Dead, Hard Target, On Deadly Ground, Mallrats, Hunt for Red October, Pink Cadillac and maybe Abraxas: Guardian of the Universe if you can't get enough Sven.

How could anyone get enough Sven?

Big time.

I can rewatch that movie anytime.

It's great when you want something dark and gritty (when you're just kind of in that mood,) but it also works as a great story with some minor levity thrown in - think Shorty, or animal crackers/Japanese food.

Great call. I'm amazed by the rewatchability factor. It's another one of those films where I can see it multiple times without ever getting tired of it. There's always something more to appreciate. It's such an intricate and nuanced movie. The way that it makes Edwards/Ruffalo's investigation so compelling (and showing the coordination between different departments in California) and then how it organically transitions into Gyllenhaal's research going front and center for the final 50 minutes or so of the movie. It's a tense, unnerving, disturbing film in the first half hour but it is just as compelling when it is focusing purely on the police work and the gathering of information.

Yeah I actually quite enjoy watching Jason evolve and the lore build in the first four films.

Strolling through the list of actors in the 70's I randomly thought of the Donald Sutherland movie Eye of the Needle. I remember it being quite good.

I really liked the list of movies with bad scores. Many of those do seem way too low. Probably my all time favorite movie no one knows is Diggstown, which has a criminally low score imo but doesn't fall into the dregs of what you listed.

Yeah Diggstown made it onto the 100 movies I would take to a desert island if I had to go.

If any of my homies around here or anybody else has something like the 20 movies they would take to the island they are certainly welcome to contribute. I'd be happy to get to know you better and maybe some other posters would benefit from a good movie or suggestion in there. I know I was talking about 100 movies and unheralded actors with my man @HUGHPHUG a while back and we shared some common ground like When a Stranger Calls.

View to a Kill is one where the song and score go a long way to elevating the movie for me. That and The Living Daylights were the only two where an 80s synth new wave type band did the music and I thought it worked really well. The filmmakers knew it also because it feels like the instrumental version of the theme song gets worked into the actual score of the movie more than with other Bond films.

I could have just filled the list up with nothing but Bond movies but I tried to limit it to my favourite four Bond movies.

Yeah Bond is something where I seemed to find myself wanting to either take everything from Dr. No through to Goldeneye or else take none at all and focus on other stuff.

I felt the same with Star Trek 1-6 but part 2 has a bigger lead over the others than any Bond film does over the field.

Similar with the original five Planet of the Apes films. I'd like to take all five but 1 and 2 have a fair lead over the rest.

You definitely have some on there that would have made my next batch if I were allowed in that hypothetical to bring another.

Are those 50 in order or just as they came to mind. I guess as they came to mind given the statistical odds against the four Bond films landing back to back otherwise.

Just as they came to mind. Gun to my head a top 10 would probably look something like this (also not in order):

-Total Recall
-Robocop
-Scarface
-Batman 1989
-Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
-Conan the Barbarian
-Back to the Future Part II
-Star Trek III: the Search for Spock
-The Empire Strikes Back
-Aliens

I think seven of those were in my first batch so, as we already knew, we see eye to eye on some of this stuff.

Interesting how high you have Star Trek 3 relative to most people. Maybe I ought to watch it with a more discerning eye. I think most people prefer 2, 4 and 6...or so it is said anyway, that the even numbered ones are the popular ones. I always liked 1, 2 and 4 the best. People called 1 boring but I took it as intended, something more like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Star Trek III has always been my favourite of those original six movies (all of which I like a lot, even V the Final Frontier). It’s not perfect, I’d say its biggest weakness is that Leonard Nimoy is only in it for the last three minutes but other than that it’s got quite a lot about it that I like:

-I liked Christopher Lloyd as the Klingon Commander, Kruge
-I liked the focus on Klingons, this was the first time we got a good look at “modern Klingons” (as represented in Star Trek from this point until the end of the Rick Berman era in 2005) with their culture as warriors instead of just being generic, scummy mustache twirling villains in the original series
-I liked seeing the lengths that Kirk is willing to go to for Spock: putting his career on the line, he loses his ship, he loses his son
-it’s got more humour than Wrath of Khan but not too much like Voyage Home
-it’s got fun scenes I’ve always like such as McCoy at the bar trying to hire that alien to take him to Genesis
-Scotty sabotaging Excelsior and they steal the Enterprise

And lastly there’s just some intangibles that I cannot articulate because my love of III goes back to me being like three years old.

Honestly, I’d easily put Zodiac near the top of my list of favorite films of the past fifteen years.

And I think it’s probably my favorite Fincher film even though I think social network is close.

Yeah in the last fifteen years Zodiac is competing for the #1 spot for me if I had to guess. No Country, True Grit and a few others would be in contention. But those three really stand out when I try to think of a quick answer.

Rush, Top Gun: Maverick, Edge of Tomorrow, Predestination, The Revenant, Spotlight, Three Billboards...

It’s been so long since I’ve seen the first one. I’d like to give it another watch. I was bored but I was probably 9 years old lol.

I do find it funny that detractors called it Star Trek: The Motion Sickness.

Great director at the helm there in Robert Wise.

I like them both. The only issue I have with them is that they both seem to be going for that ET vibe and emotional resonance but they didn’t quite get there for me.

I gave ET a watch the other day. Love that movie.

Great choices.

I loved the Coen Brothers’ True Grit. Much like the 3:10 to Yuma remake, I thought it was way better than the (already good) source film.

That's right, Star Trek the Motion Picture was a true science fiction film in the vein of 2001, Close Encounters of a Third Kind, Alien. Movies that treated their story world with seriousness and explored the themes and implications of their plot elements.

All other Star Trek movies aren't true science fiction. More like space adventure.

Star Trek 6 (my favorite) is practically a "whodunnit" murder mystery, and the writer regresses the technology of the Star Trek world in order to keep the plot going.
