Most overrated acting performance of all time

To be fair I think the Godfather generally is a much pulpier film than its often talked up as being so the character being so much larger than life isn't really terrible even if its not some great study in naturalism. Its part 2 I'd say comes rather more down to earth in style, especially the Micheal story.

Brando in Apoc Now is great, all that build-up for his appearance and it doesn't feel like a disappointment.
Didn't he show up to that shoot half dead from obesity and alcohol?
IIRC the moment he got to set, plans were made to shoot him in heavy shadow and edit around him.
Might be mistaken.
But it isn't exactly a powerhouse performance.

Buncha morans ITT.

I don't give a fuck about Heath Ledger's death.

Tied for best Joker of all times.

Yeah, I’m definitely not going to subscribe to the “Heath’s Joker was overrated” schtick. His performance was legit, his death made zero difference to the impact it delivered.

He was certainly overweight but I think that was worked around well and indeed that you never see much of him adds to the mystique.

Honestly this would be one of the first things that comes to mind with "powerhouse performance", its not exactly a rounded or subtle character but it doesn't need to be.

It does naturally seem to be the way of course that its the larger than life performances that get talked up more of course.

Agree that the character, and many if not most villains, need a sense of mystery and back story elements that are only hinted at.
Let the viewer fill in some blanks and enjoy thinking about the film instead of the film thinking for them.

J.K. Simmons as Fletcher in Whiplash
maybe the director is to blame, but all that yelling didnt sound like legit anger to me. it sounded like over-acting.

This is a bullshit thread. I'm calling bullshit. Alonzo and heaths joker. Leg wait for it. Come on son. It's obviously not overrated.

Training day was some realistic ass shit.

Heath owned joker.

I don't defend them just defend them they owned those characters
Did you say leg wait for it?

Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross.
guys is and has always been a hack.

boy can sure drink, though

He was fucken awesome in Glengarry Glen Ross. Probably his best performance.

I'll agree on Forrest Gump as I thought the acting was ridiculous, but the joker performance is constantly rated up with Darth Vader as an all time great which is ridiculous imo. I recall noone making a fuss about it until after his death as well. I'd go so far as to say Bane was a superior villain and movie.

What? Darth Vader was better acting performance? They didn't even use his real voice, he was dubbed. And Heath Ledger was fantastic as the Joker. Who played the Joker the best in your opinion?

Ledger's Joker was a layered, masterful performance. He didn't get acclaim for the role just because he died. If he'd survived he would have been a HUGE star, and we would have gotten sequels or spinoffs with the character

Id say one of the most overrated performance is Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction and probably any movie he's in. I just don't consider his acting anything special, it's more annoying than anything.

Gotta be like this guy. Does it off camera to be humble, but also has the camera recording him, so he's a douche.

<{outtahere}>

But he has a point. Besides Robin Williams, comedic actors can't really do dramatic roles. They don't come off naturalistic.

Bill Murray, Steve Martin, and Billy Crystal have all had at least one solid performance in a drama role. The pattern here is they all come from a different era.
