Which match had the best talent, with an awesome storyline and build up, but ultimatley sucked?

Please post yours before checking out mine below.

Brock Lesnar VS Goldberg @ Wreslemania 20 with Steve Austin as the special guest referee.

Throughout Golderg's career at WCW, he was a genetic monster that was the source of exitement for alot of their programing.

When Brock Lesnar made he debut in WWE, I remember thinking 'Looks like WWE found their own Goldberg, finally.'

And when Goldberg finally made the jump over to WWE, I salivated over the concept that these two bohemoths were finally going to wrestle at the biggest event of the year, WM20. Adding Stone Cold into the mix was just adding a truckful of gasoline next to a ton of TNT that was about to explode.

And..... I had to go to basic training a week before the event.

Two months later, freshly graduated from Ft.Knox, I avoid spoilers long enough to buy the recently released DVD of the event. I buy few beers for the occasion, put the disc in, sat through three hours of the other matches and build up, to view what was undoubtedly the most dissapointing and one of the worst matches I had ever seen.

I was completely unaware that both Lesnar and Golderg were quitting WWE after the event, and neither gave a shit about the match, and it showed vividly in both performances.

It was so bad, that I gave up my love of pro wrestling, which I had been a loyal fan for nearly a decade. I came back occasionally for the revival of ECW PPVs (both One Night Stand events were epic), but otherwise have seen a few events a year, if that, since then.

But I admit, my interest before WM20 had been lessened by the departure of The Rock and Stone Cold's lessed role as occasional on-screen personality. But WM20 almost completely killed it dead.

So, does my 'Most Dissapointing Match' beat yours? If there was anyone in attendence for Hogan/Nash, then yes, I'd say that would compete with mine. :)

Sting/Hogan for sure.
Goldberg/Lesnar obviously.

Another that I was disappointed in was Guerrero/Benoit at the first ECW ONS, could tell these guys had a lot planned but the crowd decided to completely ignore them to chant about Lita having herpes and who screwed Matt.

No Way Out, Hogan - Rock

Hogan - Rock II was set-up perfectly for the Hulkster to run wild on Rock and avenge the Wrestlemania loss.

- Sting/Hogan Starrcade '97 in what was the greatest buildup in modern pro wrestling history and of course WCW Fs it up.

- Hogan/Warrior 2 at HH'98. What a clusterfuck as well

- Undertaker/GG at WM9. Just a horrible match, not even a muscle suit could save this match. As a young kid, I really expected this match to be awesome and it was then I soon learned that two big, tall guys will rarely ever have a great match.

- HHH/Steiner...pick your poison, RR'03 or NWO'03. More on Steiner but I have no idea why they laid out the match this way nor why they didn't just go home early.

As mentioned, Starched 1997 is the biggest fuck up of all time. I can still get rustled over it. It was a perfect build up, it had everything you could want.

I'm gonna throw Summerslam 1998 into the discussion though. Austin/Taker have an amazing build into the 2nd biggest PPV of the year in MSG. Austin is white hot, Taker is too. He also uses my favorite theme of his. Early in the match Austin gets legit concussed and the rest of the match is just off. He wasn't all there, they didn't have much timing and it felt like an anti-climactic finish. That match wasn't that bad but this was supposed to be the definitive Taker/Austin match and it was anything but.

I still say, with all my faculties now functioning at an adult level, that Starrcade '97 and Hogan/Sting was the best buildup in modern pro wrestling history. No buildup to a match was better than Hogan/Sting. They built up the angle, built up Sting, built up the NWO, built up WCW going down the drain to the NWO better than I could even imagine and probably even better than what WCW could've ever imagined and still, as the crescendo hit, they F'd it up. Honestly, it's one of the few moments that I still get a bit bothered and upset about and in a weird way, it "rustles" me even more than the Montreal Screwjob. Such a big letdown...

Hell in a cell Armageddon. Aby Goldberg WWE match. Brock Taker streak end.

Agreed on all points.

I think Fully Loaded 99 made up for it.

I'm not sure I'd reach too far in the 'most talent' category, but I remember really being into the buildup of Undertaker vs Undertaker at WM... 13 maybe? I really enjoyed the storyline and build up and thought it was a cool premise, but it just didn't translate well in the ring that I can remember.

Lesnar/Goldberg WM 20 was the first that came to mind for me as well, then Sting/Hogan Starrcade because of the botched ending. Rock/Cena 1 wasn't great imo opinion either.
