In Retrospect, Was John Cena's Heel Turn The Most Random Inconsequential "Shocking Moment" Ever?

Anyone remember Raw Underground?

Or how about when Dolph Ziggler was hot and they did this weird "anti-gimmick" gimmick where he had no music or parodied DX every week and then dropped the belt and just disappeared?

Every Bray Wyatt gimmick felt like it went nowhere

They definitely dropped the ball on his original run, that basically turned him into a jobber. That Bray Wyatt could've been huge, and I think his promos would've come across a lot better if he was actually dominant and backing all his long winded bullshit up. It was like giving Barry Horrowitz 15 minutes every Monday night, to drone on and on about what a badass he is.

I thought "The Fiend" was absolutely retarded, so I was actually a bit surprised it went as far as it did.

What about the Wyatt 6? They seemed to pretty much slip into irrelevancy right after their big debut.

Ric Flair being the Black Scorpion at Starrcade'90, after it was built up for months that it was supposed to be the Ultimate Warrior, who was the WWF Champion at the time, which wouldve made him showing up in a WCW angle the most mind blowing thing ever

Ric Flair just randomly being inserted as the masked mystery man at the very last moment, because they couldnt figure out how to get out of the hole that they booked themselves into, was so ridiculous and anti-climactic and such a freaking let down and really set the tone that would dominate WCW for most of the next decade til it died, that being a tone of general ineptness LoL
I have never hear it was supposed to be Warrior. I always read it was going to be Al Perez but he quit before the angle or company. I do remember they said it was someone in Sting's past so maybe that is where the Warrior rumor came from. Either way, Flair was a horrible reveal.

Dang, I like the Kevin Sullivan idea, that wouldve worked perfectly in the rasslin lore sense and he wouldve been great in that dark role, plus he already had the robe from his days as the Games Master in JCP so you save on your costume budget too
Sullivan would have been amazing in that role but Vince probably only saw his height.

Jake too would have been great but I think Heyman would have been the best one for it.

Had they not totally jobbed out Don Callis, he would hve been good too.

So the Rock quitting WWE is what made this entire thing suck? I'm reading he had a tiff with TKO. If he is on the board, why didnt he have more pull or is this another Black Adam cant lose thing?

Here is mine though, and it pains me becuase I truly beleive it SHOULD have been a huge deal.

DDP's WWE debut. I actually understand the Stalker gimmick. It wasn't about Sara it was about getting into Takers head to get a match. The promo explained it all. DDP had literally became one of the biggest draws after being every job in wrestling prior, won aa couple World Titles but now was in WWE and calling out the biggest dog in the Yard. He was begging to me "made famous" and had they kept that approach all the way to Mania, it would have been incredible and positioned DDP as an even bigger star after to face Rock, Austin, etc.

Of course they ruined it all.

I don't think anything has been confirmed, but it certainly feels like he was the key to this whole thing, and then he just bailed on them for whatever reason. Only other thing I can think of is that Cena grew uncomfortable with the role very quickly(I mean, he is the "Make a Wish" king), but that doesn't seem likely, given that they went with it for as long as they did.

I'm almost just as interested in the decision they made to essentially just memory hole it, like nothing happened. They didn't even set up a proper angle for Cena to turn back. They essentially just went "ahh', fuck this", and pretended like it never happened, LOL.

The turn made so much sense at the time too. The "selling your soul" to be champ one more time. It was about five years too late but still had a ton of potential for a late redemption arc around his last match or two.

Yeah, it was one of the most interesting angles they had going. People were already speculating who would be next to join the stable. It all got weird and awkward very quickly. You knew something was up from the very first heel Cena promo, where he mentioned absolutely nothing about The Rock, and instead tried to work in some "I'm gonna ruin wrestling" thing. I'm guessing that three weeks or so in between the turn and Cena's heel debut, were spent trying to write a whole new angle for his character.

So reading up on it,

Rock got in his feels
The rapper sucked at wrestling and was not another Bad Bunny

Sucks for Cena, him being heel almost made me become a full time watcher again. That was the first Raw I watched in a long time.

I have zero recollection of that but that is wild. I remember the Scorpion saying he was "from his past" but never remember the Warrior being mentioned. I'm looking for the YT vids.

Kind of related, but do you remember "The Renegade". That was another "Ultimate" surprise.

Oh yeah. I mentioned in another thread that I thought he was the Warrior off roids.

Felt really bad for that guy. He ended up killing himself and I'm sure his failed career didnt help

Sting finally turning heel in 1999 after being WCW's forever babyface only for the fans to keep cheering him like a babyface no matter what he did and WCW quietly dropping him being a heel just a few weeks later.

Then not even a year later WCW trying the same thing with Goldberg only for the fans to keep cheering him and WCW quietly dropping him being a heel a few weeks later.

They thought Sting would be taken seriously as a heel for attacking Hogan after Hogan went back to the red and yellow. But Sting had warned people about Hogan not being loyal to WCW since Hogan's debut, then feuded with him for a year after the NWO formed. So now all because Hogan changed his outfit, Sting was supposed to trust him? You know who probably booked that, bro.

WCW fucking up Bret Hart's debut after the Screwjob was another perfect example hoe they had no clue what they were doing.

That was Disney fucking up Star Wars level dumbassery.

Yeah, that's a good one. Can't remember, but wasn't his in ring debut as a guest referee or some shit? His WCW career in my mind is him sitting in a limo, guest refereeing, the metal plate under his jersey, "El Dandy", and getting kicked in the head. The end.

His couple of matches with Benoit stand out because of their awesomeness, but yeah...
