Monster Hunter...Enlighten Me

Just took another stab at Alatreon, with a Long Sword.

Three deaths before the Judgement thingy, then was finished off.

I HATE AOE shit! I can't stand being rushed! There is a reason why I play behind a big-arsed shield!

I doubt that I'll take another stab at it, and frankly the fight makes me feel better about buying the game in the first place...

Come on man. This is a fight you gotta learn. I thought i could go in and tank it with a meta set and got smoked. It took hours of learning the moveset and what I could punish. Also if you died to the nuke you didn't get enough elemental damage.

Yeah, unfortunately I prefer to play defensively, whittling away with a Lance or a Gunlance.

There seems to be too many AOEs for me to do that with this, and I won't do enough elemental damage.

Best bet would be to get one of the Safi Longswords and max out the elemental damage on it, as it hits fast, though I'll need to fight Safi a few more times to get an ice or dragon element sword.

The fights sucked, and the learning will suck.

Elemental gunlance and he hits the threshold fairly easily. Maybe copy this build and then try it out.

Loads of events are up like Temp Nerg, AT Namielle and the whetfish scale farm which i'm doing now to prepare for Alatreon.

It took me about 20 tries before I got the first win. An additional 4 tries before I got the second win. Then went on to lose about another 15 straight.

I've taken it about 5 times total so far and I feel fairly comfortable with Alatreon now (that said I've got my palico w/ Health gadget).

I'm a lancer too. You've got this. I'll post up my build with decs after this night shift.

Alright, before we get started, my build is pretty much moulded by this post here. Shout out to Dagrix for the build (the link has a full guide which I didn't get to see until about 15 or so losses in T_T)

I personally had seraphic0's video for aid.

Now this set is the one that got me to the dance. Of course, replace Kjarr Crest King with Kjarr Crest Stream and replace blaze jewels with frost jewels if you're doing the Special Assignment or Event quest (aka 'The Evening Star') and replace Kjarr Crest King with Kjarr Crest Stream.

Now this next one, I've jigged a couple of decos around to get Ice Attack to 6, in exchange for Divine Protection and Flinch Free.

That first set is what I got my 5 or so wins with. I've tried a Dagrix inspired Safi build and, while very powerful at getting the elem DPS check, I just couldn't deal with the need to sharpen (running around waiting for an opening cost me DPS and the win). Maybe I need to just keep attacking despite sharpness/git gud? Dunno, I'll give it a crack again but Master's Touch is great here.

First win took a Health Gadget revive, and 3faints with Safeguard. Out of the ~5 wins, I've only ever beaten him once with no faints (no safeguard, but did use Palico's Health Gadget revive) - I believe I got it before the third or fourth nova. The last two I've cleared with one faint before the fourth nova (both needed an additional Health Gadget revive).

As the guide shows and, as you probably already know, the aim is to get at least one elemental check in his first element, then the first horn break once Ala switches to Dragon.
Escaton. Mega potion/Astera Jerky/whatever.
Now if you've got the horn break, Ala should start in its first element again, albeit more aggressive. Aim for the second elemental check, followed by the second horn break when Ala goes Dragon.
Escaton. Mega potion/Astera Jerky/whatever.
Again go for the third check and then beat the ever living shit out of it as best you can. Head has the largest raw hitzone - aim for it as much as possible.
If Ala makes it past the third Escaton?
Your element isn't going to work in this round until it switches to Dragon. It's still possible to get the check but your game has to be flawless.
If it's not dead by this time and you've fainted to Escaton, hopefully you still have two faints left. You should be able to take it in this round. If not, try again.

I hope this helps. It's a fucking hard fight and took me ages. I love it. Arguably shitty mechanic but I love this fight. Good luck to you.

And happy hunting.

tl;dr: use the very first link

Wow, those sets seem far better than mine.

I used a mix of Bazel and Vaal, giving me a load of guard and health skills but nothing for attack.

I'll absolutely give this a go.

Cheers!

Let us know how you go. I tried Safi a few more times to get the fire/ice lance but cbf with the damn RNG. The guide suggested running upgraded Kjarr gear so I did - massive help that I hadn't melded or sold the Kjarr weapons like I did Safi's .

I also feel pretty lucky with the crit boost/vit and crit boost/div blessing jewels. If you haven't been lucky enough to get those, hopefully you've at least got tier 4 blaze/frost jewels and the tier 2 crit boost and tenderizer jewels.

Also, if you're having trouble with Ala's moveset, I'd really recommend having a look at that guide. The biggest key to this fight is making Alatreon pay for all its attacks and that guide is money. In addition to actually typing all of it down and having it make sense, the OP went through the trouble of posting linked timestamps to examples referenced in the text.

Ooof! You've been using shit defense mate. No wonder you hated the aoe moves. They were probably hitting way harder than they should have.

Yeah, I might have to fight a bit but I'll have a look at what I have already. I should be able to buy the Teo parts as I never made any Teo weapons and I have the garuga greaves already. I should have an ice and a fire Lance and Gunlance but I'll need to break down a lot of Safi weapons in order to upgrade one? I have a lot of jewels, though we'll see if I have what I need. If not, investigations will have to be done.

I'll probably keep at this one solo, as I can see a lot of people struggling with Alatreon.

Thanks again.

Works well against regular monsters but yeah, it puts me in a lot of trouble with AOE (Lunastra is a nightmare with it too). Only other thing is that it lacks offensive skills, so unless I bring a spread 3 HBG with shield, I just keep close and keep countering, poking away.

Shinras sets look really good though, as they have guard and full crit, so I'll be trying to make that set shortly.

You can break down safi weapons for dracolites but I'd probably just wait until its quest is back in rotation. The Kulve Taroth slay event is out now though so you can grind out and try for a Kjarr Fire or Ice Lance. It just needs KT parts to upgrade it. Those weapons are pretty good as they have the Critical element skill on them

Nice. I'll give it a go.

Thanks fellas. Wish me luck.

Edit: I have a strong set now, but I may have to do a bit of hunting before Alatreon, as my gems aren't perfect and I need to max out my armour. Still, looks like an excellent set.

Here's the build i'm working on. Just need the final few augments for the lances and a load of armor spheres and i'll be ready.

Got trounced, once in group session and once in solo.

Stepping back, as the last one was particularly bad.

The bloody thing hits hard and fast, so I actually did worse than when I used worse armour and a long sword. I left myself open with the pokes due to worrying about the DPS check. I had to chase the bugger as well because it moves around the map so much and does so many ranged attacks...

Yeah, tried Gunlance and Lance on it. Gunlance?, it just flew away and hit me from afar. Lance? I'd just get hit and either one shotted or two shotted. That's with fully upgraded armour.

Fucking terrible. I may try sword and shield, but I don't have anything half decent and nothing to make with either.

The flying is bullshit unless you've got ranged attacks. You can use the ghillie mantle to make it land or I've seen people use smoke bombs too

Ouch. Yeah once it was up in the air I didn't have much I could do. I just stayed on it trying to land what little pokes I could until it made its way back onto the ground. As deadshot mentioned people have used ghillie and smoke to make it land (tried the smoke - didn't work lol.

I've found it much easier in solo than group hunt, especially an SOS. I have no idea where the hunt is at if I drop in on an SOS.

@DeadshoT: What weapons did you use to clear alatreon?
