Mobile phone étiquette: is it even a thing anymore?

People still talk on phones? Mine is used for messaging 99% of the time. Other than talking to my wife on a long drive or quick calls to the office, it may as well be a really fast telegraph machine.

Lol, this past summer I was at the MVD getting my license renewed and this lady, probably her 30s, was watching videos from what I assumed was Facebook, at full blast. I could hear every word of every video and I was sitting at least 15 feet away.

This wasn't a very busy time, there were maybe 10 people waiting, so the place was pretty quiet. I was just sitting there astounded at her complete lack of awareness. How self-absorbed you have to be to do something like that was really special to watch.

I don't talk on my phone in public, but I also don't care if others do.

You people need to find more shit to fill your day.

Idk. I only ever hear people talking on their cell while at the grocery, and they're not obnoxious about it

Could be posted in the Gym Idiots thread.

Waiting for d-dag to finish in the squat rack, but he's just hanging out, talking loudly on his bluetooth earpiece to another chode.

Yes, my jimmies were rustled.

I don't care about the loud talkers on the phone, but if you and I are talking, don't be on your phone sending a text, writing an email, or looking at a website. That is just so rude. I can't stand it when someone doesn't maintain eye contact while we are talking, especially if it's because they are distracted by their phone.

Tell them to pipe down. Another thing disappearing is people not being afraid to speak up when someone is acting like a fucking idiot.

So afraid of offending somebody, whose offending everybody.

Thing is, loud and abnoxious public behavior didn't just become a thing recently -it's been around forever. It's the people willing to speak up and say something that are more extinct.

Just politely ask them to keep it down, most people don't want confrontation and will abide anyways.

Fair points. But that not really what op was talking about. He never said they were loud, he is just pissed because someone has the nerve to be talking on there phone near him. To me there is no logical reason for him to be pissed about this, he's ok with people talking near him, but if they are talking on a phone near him, well this is not acceptable and they should take it outside.

I have yet to see someone explain how this logically makes sense. When I asked op, he just said phone etiquette dictates they should go outside. Thats not how phone etiquette works in my opinion. There are places where this may be true (funeral, theatre etc.) but a cafe? Not a fine dining establishment. A cafe.

Someone talking on their phone in a cafe at a reasonable volume, is no different then anyone else talking in the cafe at the same volume. This isnt even an arguable statement, in my opinion.

To be clear I pretty much never talk on my cell at home or anywhere else. So I'm not taking the position I'm taking because I'm one of these people who yaks on a phone everywhere. Its just if you think about this in a logical manner there is zero basis for being pissed off about this.

I dont understand the problem. If he were sitting with a friend of his and having a conversation you wouldn't mind, would you? So what difference does it make if he's doing it over the phone or not? It would actually be less intrusive since you wouldn't be hearing the person he's conversing with.

One time this old dude at the store answered the phone and immediately put it on speaker. There was a woman on the other line just absolutely shrieking at the guy. "GIVE ME BACK MY BABY YOU MOTHER FUCKER! I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU IF I EVER SEE YOU AGAIN!!!!". We're talking blood curdling screams coming out of this phone that you don't even hear in horror movies.

I thought the guy would be like oh shit and either hang up or take it off speaker.

No....like a straight up boss he just calmly said "You're doing that thing we talked about again". I about died trying to hold my laughter in.

I was talking to a friend in a store once, and this bitch on her phone in the same aisle had the audacity to say "excuse me a sec, I CAN'T HEAR YOU CUZ THESE GUYS ARE TALKING".

Like dafuq you stupid bitch, everyone in range of your phone call should drop everything? People are fuckin crazy.
Wow. Wtf is wrong with people?

Why bother holding your laughter in? Its not like you should give a crap if dude gets embarrassed at that point

Sorry ts will answer op later. On the phone right now.

Having a coffee in a starbucks at the moment and a few people having loud phone conversations. Guess everyone has to know how awesome their life is.

"It's nobody else's business" said nobody under 25 since the invention of front-facing phone cameras.

Fucking shits me, people just think the world is their phone booth these days. I'm currently in a cafe and the fuckhead next to me is talking and laughing away to one of his douche bag friends, not a care in the world, we all have to listen to his conversation. And this is the norm these days from what I can tell. I just had a work related call but i went outside to take it, am I old fashioned?
You should start participating in the conversation. Start laughing along with the guy and interrupt every now- respond as though he's talking to you.
