DOPE Helmer Rick Famuyiwa is the New Director of THE FLASH

Rick-Famuyiwa-The-Flash-060216a-Dragonlord.jpg

The Flash has a new director. Just weeks after Warner Bros. parted ways with Seth Grahame-Smith, who was to make his directorial debut with the project, the studio has set another newbie for the gig: Rick Famuyiwa, who made a splash with his Sundance sensation, Dope.

The project will retain Grahame-Smith’s script, which he wrote working off of a treatment by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the Lego Movie duo who once were eyeing it as a possible directing vehicle.

The Flash already has a release date — March 16, 2018 — and a star, Ezra Miller, who's portraying the classic hero known as "the fastest man alive." The actor made his debut in Batman v Superman.

After directing 2002’s Brown Sugar and 2010 romantic comedy Our Family Wedding, Famuyiwa caught the industry’s eye with Dope, the 2015 film that was a breakout at Sundance and won the prize for best editing. He recently helmed HBO’s original film Confirmation, starring Kerry Washington as Anita Hill.

Bill Skarsgard Cast as Pennywise the Clown in New Line's IT Movie

Bill-Skarsgard-Pennywise-the-Clown-It-Dragonlord.jpg

Bill Skarsgard has the It factor. The actor, who is one of the stars of Hemlock Grove, has nabbed the role of Stephen King’s iconic villain Pennywise the Clown in New Line’s adaptation of the author’s landmark novelIt.

Skarsgard is in final negotiations to star in the horror pic, whose cast will also include St. Vincent actor Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs and Jeremy Ray Taylor. Andy Muschietti, the helmer behind the surprise horror hit Mama, is directing the adaptation, which is being told in two parts.

The story follows a group of teens called the Losers Club who defeat a creature called It. Years later, the creature returns, and the former club members, now adults, have to band together again even though they have no memory of the first battle.

New Line’s first movie will tell the kids’ story, while the second movie will focus on the adults. Pennywise is the form the evil entity frequently takes. He is a clown who, when he smiles, is all killer teeth.

The project was originally coming together under the direction of Cary Fukunaga, who left over creative differences, and at the time, Will Poulter (We’re the Millers, The Revenant) was to have played Pennywise. The search for a new director pushed the movie by a year and Poulter was no longer available.

Skarsgard is the son of Stellan Skarsgard (Thor) and the brother of Alexander Skarsgard, who stars in Warner Bros.' Legend of Tarzan this summer. Apart from Hemlock Grove, Bill Skarsgard has appeared in Lionsgate’s Divergent.

Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson in Talks for 1950s Fashion Drama

Paul-Thomas-Annderson-Daniel-Day-Lewis-Dragonlord.jpg

Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson may be assembling a big screen reunion, this time in the world of fashion. Although no deal is set, sources tell Variety that Lewis is in talks to reunite with Anderson, who directed his Oscar-winning performance in There Will Be Blood, on the auteur’s latest movie.

Sources say that Lewis, who hasn’t made a film since Lincoln in 2012, has been loosely attached to the project for some time. Anderson is still working on a script while meeting young actresses of Eastern European descent to cast supporting roles.

Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures is producing and financing the untitled project. The film will be set in 1950s New York and revolve around the fashion industry, although the plot is under wraps. Annapurna most recently worked with PTA on The Master and Inherent Vice.

Lewis, who won his third Academy Award for his performance as Honest Abe in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, has kept a low-profile the past decade. Prior to Lincoln, the 59 year-old took a three-year break after Rob Marshall’s Nine in 2009. He filmed PTA’s There Will Be Blood before that in 2007.

What's True and False Regarding ROGUE ONE Reshoots; Tony Gilroy Brought In to Help

Rogue-One-Felicity-Jones-060316-Dragonlord.jpg

Over the past week, numerous stories have emerged about reshoots on the first of the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and fans have become as nervous and confused as C-3PO at a Star Trek convention.

After reaching out to deeply placed sources on the movie and at Lucasfilm to sort fact from fiction, Entertainment Weekly has learned new details about the state of the project – including who’s working on the new sequences and what those scenes involve.

Here’s what’s true: The film, which is about Rebels stealing the plans for the first Death Star just before the events of 1977’s original Star Wars, is undergoing four to five weeks of reshoots, beginning this month and ending just days before the Star Wars Celebration fan event in London on July 15.

High level sources at Lucasfilm, who spoke to EW independently and anonymously, offered some details that place the schedule in context. (Official studio sources declined comment, saying they don’t respond to rumors.)

In what may reassure fans, reshoots were scheduled for the film before even a single scene was shot. It’s standard practice now for large-scale films to build in additional weeks of shooting so filmmakers can tweak a movie after the first assembly cut.

Those reshoots were originally planned for the spring, but were bumped to mid-summer to allow for extra time as director Gareth Edwards and the creative team decided what they wanted to alter. “The changes have everything to do with clarity and character development and all take place [as inserts] within scenes we’ve already shot,” said one source on the project.

In other words, the changes involve more intimate moments – not redoing entire battle sequences or plot lines. “It’s a lot of talking in cockpits,” as one insider described the new footage.

Rogue-One-060316a-Dragonlord.jpg

CURRENT TIMELINE

The plan now is to lock picture in mid-August and begin scoring the movie in September – which would actually be an earlier timeline than The Force Awakens, which also underwent several weeks of summer reshoots and locked picture in October.

The rumor that almost half the movie is being reshot elicits both laughter and groans from those closest to the film. While it might seem like spin-control from those working on the film, their logic bears out: “If we were rewriting the movie and reshooting 40 percent of movie, we would not be finishing in August,” a source on the production says. “People really would be panicking – and changing the release date.”

The length of the reshoots adds up because it involves separate contributions from many different actors. Rogue One is an ensemble story with seven major characters, including the outlaw Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), and her team of Rebel infiltrators played by Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk (as a performance capture droid), Riz Ahmed, Forest Whitaker, and Wen Jiang. Ben Mendelsohn costars as an Imperial officer, and Mads Mikkelson has said he plays Jyn’s father.

A source familiar with the reshoots said one of the challenges has been reuniting the cast, many of whom are involved in other movies after the pre-planned reshoots were shifted from the spring to summer. “It is a complicated schedule trying to pull people in around other things they’re doing,” the source says. “And this cast is spread out all over the world.”

Rogue-One-Diego-Luna-060316-Dragonlord.jpg

A NEW COLLABORATOR

Rumors that Christopher McQuarrie, best known for writing the Oscar-winning script for The Usual Suspects and writing and directingMission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, has written a new script and will be involved in co-directing the reshoots are false.

McQuarrie did make contributions to an earlier draft of the script, sources confirm. But that’s the extent of his work on Rogue One. As rumors about his involvement in the Star Wars film began to spread yesterday, McQuarrie himself took to Twitter to deny them.

But EW’s reporting has uncovered a new collaborator on Rogue One: Tony Gilroy, the writer-director of Michael Clayton. He was brought aboard the project in the spring to offer notes on the first cut and write some additional material to enhance the story.

Gilroy has deep ties to the Rogue One team. He also worked on the screenplays for many of the Bourne films and even directed 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, which were all produced by Frank Marshall, the husband of Kathleen Kennedy, who is the president of Lucasfilm. One source says he’s trusted by Kennedy and the story team, and has even been recruited to consult on other Star Wars projects.

In addition to his Kennedy-Marshall history, Gilroy has worked before with Rogue One director Edwards, having done similar uncredited work on the filmmaker’s previous movie, 2014’s Godzilla, to strengthen the story before release.

In addition to writing new dialogue for the reshoots, Gilroy will assist Edwards as a second unit director when cameras start rolling again.

Rogue-One-060316b-Dragonlord.jpg

A GRITTIER TONE

Fears that the heavy-duty war movie is being watered down into a lighthearted caper are unfounded, according to what EW has learned. “The movie is very different than [The Force Awakens], and that’s intentional,” one source says. “It’s a war film.”

Rumors that Disney executives have forced the changes to make the movie more family friendly are also false. According to EW’s sources, there have been no test screenings, and it’s unlikely there ever will be on a Star Wars film.

The only two individuals outside of Lucasfilm who have seen Rogue One at this point are Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger and studio chief Alan Horn. One source close to the film said rather than feeling like Disney brass was meddling, the filmmakers were just happy the corporate bosses let them alter the schedule and make the changes they wanted.

“This is a normal part of our filmmaking process,” that source said. “We’re working and tweaking and making sure it’s right. This is how you build something in layers.”

But there’s no question: the rumors have freaked out fans. In addition to alarming the audience, this week’s ;gossip – fueled by a report in the New York Post – has also frustrated the filmmaking team, who are starting to learn the massive enthusiasm for Star Wars can be a double-edged sword. The passion is over-the-top, but so is the scrutiny.

“I can’t think of anything in world of creativity [that isn’t changed or reworked,]” one source said. “You need to do that when making these movies.”

One source asked that the Star Wars community give them the benefit of the doubt until the Celebration event in July, when some of what they’ve been working on with Rogue One will be unveiled: “People will go insane.”

Anthony Hopkins Joins TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT

Anthony-Hopkins-Transformers-The-Last-Knight-Dragonlord.jpg

Anthony Hopkins has joined the cast of Transformers: The Last Knight. Michael Bay will direct the fifth installment of the Paramount franchise that sees giant robots battle for intergalactic supremacy.

Mark Wahlberg will be back to star as the disgraced scientist turned hero, Cade Yeager, and, after a brief one-movie hiatus, Josh Duhamel will also be returning to the franchise as the ever-vigilant Lt. Colonel Lennox. No details were given about the role the English actor will be playing.

The announcement was made on the Transformers Twitter page with a message that read: "The man, the myth, the legend – help us welcome Sir Anthony Hopkins to the #transformers universe."

Hopkins casting news comes on the heels (or paws) of another Last Knight casting. Yesterday, Bay announced that Freya, an epileptic six-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier that was last month dubbed "Britain's loneliest dog", would have a role in the fifth Transformersmovie.

Hopkins will next be seen in theaters this August, in the Nicholas Hoult starrer Collide.

FAST & FURIOUS 8 Goes ‘Mad Max’ in New Set Video from Iceland

2dazio1.jpg

Production on Fast & Furious 8 has undergone a striking location shift. When last we checked in with the highly anticipated sequel, filming was underway in Cuba on what proved to be a historic shoot—the first Hollywood film to shoot in Cuba since before the embargo. But now, director F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) has moved to a rather chilly locale for the next setup, as a new official Fast & Furious 8 set video shows off the production’s Iceland set piece.

Yes indeed, for the first time ever the Fast & Furious franchise is going snowbound, and it certainly looks to be providing some serious production value. In fact, there’s a bit of a Mad Max vibe in this here production video as we see a bevy of military vehicles chasing down the Fast & Furious crew’s ill-equipped cars, all set against the stark and icy backdrop of the snow-covered country. There’s also a slight Die Another Day vibe here, but one imagines that’s one comparison the Fast & Furious crew wants to avoid at all costs.

The film stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Charlize Theron, Dwayne Johnson, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ludacris, Jason Statham, and Kurt Russell. Fast & Furious 8 opens in theaters on April 14, 2017.

Elizabeth Banks Exits as PITCH PERFECT 3 Director

Elizabeth-Banks-Director-102715-Dragonlord.jpg

Elizabeth Banks has exited as the director of Pitch Perfect 3. Banks will remain on the project as a producer, after having produced the first two films in the Kay Cannon-penned franchise and helmed 2015's Pitch Perfect 2.

Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are returning to star in the a cappella-centric movie, which also will see the return of Brittany Snow and Pitch 2 addition Hailee Steinfeld. The first two Pitch Perfect films have grossed over $400 million at the global box office.

Banks has numerous roles lined up, both in front of and behind the camera, including a turn as Rita Repulsa in Lionsgate's Power Rangers movie and directorial gigs for Sony's Charlie's Angels reboot and the YA adaptation Red Queen.

On May 31, Universal had pushed the release of Pitch Perfect 3 from July 21, 2017, to Dec. 22, only a few weeks after the studio said it was moving the film up to July 21 from Aug. 4 of next year.

Sam Raimi in Talks to Direct Tornado Heist Caper STORMFALL

Sam-Raimi-Comic-Con-060316-Dragonlord.jpg

Sam Raimi is developing with an eye to direct an untitled action adventure movie set up at Warners Bros. The studio recently picked up the Raimi project, which had a working title of Stormfall, and is now out to writers to pen the script. Raimi will produce and possibly direct.

Details are scarce but it is known that the story is a heist caper set in the Carolinas during a tornado storm and centers on the relationship between one man and his older mentor.

Raimi is best known for helming the Evil Dead horror movies as well as the original Spider-Man trilogy that starred Tobey Maguire. He tackled the crime genre with well-regarded thriller A Simple Plan and last directed 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful for Disney.

Daniel Craig, Katherine Heigl Joins Steven Soderbergh's Heist Comedy LOGAN LUCKY

Daniel-Craig-Katherine-Heigl-Dragonlord.jpg

Daniel Craig and Katherine Heigl are the latest to join Steven Soderbergh's hillbilly heist comedy Logan Lucky, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Heigl is attached, sources say, and Craig has an offer, with negotiations expected to commence shortly.

The film, which was being shopped as a hot package in Cannes, stars Channing Tatum and Michael Shannon and boasts Adam Driver, Riley Keough and Seth MacFarlane in supporting roles.

Soderbergh, who hasn't helmed a movie since 2013's medical thriller Side Effects and vowed that he was retired from film, is making the switch back to the big screen with Logan Lucky.

Tatum and Shannon will play brothers who plan a heist during a high-profile NASCAR race. Production is scheduled to begin in the fall.

Craig is not expected to return to the James Bond franchise, and a supporting role in a Soderbergh film might seem an unconventional choice. But the director is never at a loss when it comes to luring major talent.

Heigl once had one of the hottest film careers in Hollywood after her star turn in 2007's Knocked Up, but it has cooled significantly in recent years. Landing a lead female role in Logan Lucky would give her big-screen career a jolt.

Cate Blanchett in Talks to Join All-Female OCEAN'S ELEVEN

Cate-Blanchett-All-Female-Oceans-Eleven-Dragonlord.jpg

Sources close to the project tell The Playlist that Academy Award winning actress Cate Blanchett is currently in talks to join Gary Ross' all-female Ocean's Eleven reboot that is currently affectionately known as “Ocean’s Ocho” by the key creatives, which of course means eight principal thieves pulling off a heist, not eleven.

Should the deal close, Blanchett would be playing the Brad Pitt role next to Bullock’s Clooney character at least as far as the outline goes. But neither actress is playing a female version of those characters. Instead, the roles are loosely modeled after the friendship/partnership dynamic established in the Soderbergh films.

Expected to be a star-studded affair, the film is aiming to shoot this late fall/early winter, but that may put the brakes on the rumored involvement of Jennifer Lawrence. Apparently, she may have a scheduling conflict. While Lawrence has a relationship with Ross (he directed her in The Hunger Games, and the pair had been developing a two-part adaptation of John Steinbeck‘s East Of Eden and an adaptation of Hannah Kent‘s bestselling Burial Rites), The Playlist hears her involvement may not pan out due to scheduling conflicts.

While there was some early talk that George Clooney’s Danny Ocean character could cameo in the film, that idea has been nixed for now. However, they have loose plans for sequels should the movie take off, and it’s possible the character could appear down the road.

James Franco to Star and Possibly Direct Stephen King's DRUNKEN FIREWORKS

James-Franco-020416b-Dragonlord.jpg

Add the short story Drunken Fireworks to the number of Stephen King-penned fictions making their way to the big screen. Rabbit Bandini Productions and Rubicon Entertainment have teamed on the drama, and James Franco is set to star. He possibly could direct as well, but that hasn’t yet been decided.

The script is being written by Matt Rager, a frequent Franco collaborator whose credits include As I Lay Dying, The Sound And The Fury and the upcoming John Steinbeck novel adaptation In Dubious Battle, all of which Franco directed. Franco and his Rabbit Bandini partner Vince Jolivette will produce with Doug McKay, Robert Kaplan, Marc Senter and Nathan Grubbs of Rubicon.

Drunken Fireworks is a darkly comic tale of a blue-collar mechanic and a retired mob boss who go head to head in an increasingly antagonistic annual Fourth of July fireworks competition. The tale is set in small-town rural Maine, where local good ol’ boy Alden McCausland (Franco) strikes up a rivalry with retired mob boss Nicky Serrano when Nicky moves in across the lake from Alden and his mother. When Nicky bests Alden’s Fourth of July fireworks show, Alden goes to great lengths to ensure that he beats Nicky the next year in a competition known henceforth as the “Fourth of July Arms Race.”

Rabbit Bandini is in production on the postapocalyptic thriller Future World, directed by Franco and starring Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Snoop Dogg and Franco. Currently in postproduction is The Masterpiece with New Line Cinema, also directed by and starring Franco. He also stars in Fox’s Why Him with Bryan Cranston.

Tom Hiddleston Addresses Reports He Is in Talks to Play James Bond

Tom-Hiddleston-060416-Dragonlord.jpg

Tom Hiddleston has been a fan-favorite choice to play James Bond for a while now, but it was his performance in BBC series The Night Manager which made most people sit up and pay attention to what a great 007 he could be. A report surfaced a week ago indicating that the British actor is in "advanced talks" to take over from Daniel Craig.

Unfortunately, the Thor: Ragnarok star put a bit of a dampener on the prospect of him being the next Bond during an appearance at Wizard World Philadelphia this weekend by revealing the following. "I'm sorry to disappoint you everybody. I don't think that announcement is coming. But I'm very gratified to hear the enthusiasm. There's not much that I can say that I haven't already said, but I know... your guess is as good as mine to be honest." So, it looks like those talks haven't happened...or have they?

This wouldn't be the first time an actor has outright denied having any sort of involvement with a role they've been rumored to be in the running for (See Paul Rudd denying Ant-Man casting [link]), so it might be too soon to count him out just yet...
