MMA forgotten stories thread

Hiromitsu Kanehara’s first 3 fights in Pride were against Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Crocop, and Alistair Overeem. He lost all 3, but actually took Crocop to a decision...

See, that's the thing with just stating the obvious, without looking at context. Yes, it was a decision win for CC (somehow, you managed to make that look like a bad thing).

But....

Cro Cop suffered a massive unexpected disappointing loss to Randleman. He was sure he was going to walk through Randleman, got cocky and got KTFO. Everyone advised him to take it easy and take a 3-6 month break. No, he decided to say SCREW YOU, and fought in a MONTH. Without any preparations whatsoever. It was, by far, the worst mental and physical state we've ever seen him. And somehow, he managed to stay up during the fight and actually won the decision. Nog and Fedor had 4 fights in 2004. Mirko had 8. That's the context.

If you look at mirkos career overall he had several tough slumps that most would have quit. The guy would just leave mma and win the k1,avenge some losses on a career ending 10 fight win streak. This guy really is something else.

Perseverance. That's what's his defining characteristic.

Mirko got me into K1 and MMA. He was my favorite fighter for a long time, and will always have a special place in my heart. He was never the best fighter there is, and is/was quite stubborn in his approach to training and fighting. His best weapon in his prime (his speed) started to fade away around 2008-2009. But no one could say he didn't have perseverance.

You know, when mirko was fighting pat barry in vancouver he was detained at the border and questioned for 6 hours about his anti terrorism special forces activities. Then he is freed, beats pat barry, makes a new best friend, and collects the fight of the night honors like a FUCKING G.

"The first day I was kept for four hours and two more the next day. Although they were not satisfied with my answers they let me go to the hotel in the city, to sleep. They asked me to think about the questions raised. I was threatened with deportation, but appealed to the Croatian Embassy. The Consul was urgently flown in from Ottawa, and the UFC hired the best lawyer for immigration issues. They obviously knew what would happen because my lawyer was on the runway at the airport! The inquiry was painful for me, but I must say that the Immigration Bureau officials very correctly performed their job. They used what they have to, but there are obviously very interested in the military and police matters from the former Yugoslavia. Most of them were interested in my military service. I served in 1993-1994 as a conscripts, but I was not involved in combat activities. They asked me if I was involved in the torture of civilians, asking for names of command lines and tactical commanders. They were asking for details of my activities in Lucko ATJ [anti-terrorist unit] which I joined a few years after the war. They gave me a list of names for me to confirm, but I did not do it. I can not confirm one name because it is still a matter of dignity and principles. I said to myself, ‘If it comes to it I am ready to go home‘. They could have done what they wanted with me but [in the end] they let me fight"

Lol fair enough i love hendo anyway

I know that the punch came after bisping was knocked down but as far as hendo could tell in real time, bisping couldve sprung back up again. Was on hendo to finish the job and thats what he did til the ref grabbed him. Thats mma buddeh

Fake news! Henderson had said he knew he was knocked out and the follow up was to shut him up

IFC: Global Domination

(...super stacked 1 night LHW tourney, Babalu, Shogun, Horn, Sonnen, Forrest etc)

The mat must've been freshly spray painted...every fighter who ended up on their back...had his back painted blue, silver or black...just depended where he hit the mat...
They used to spray paint the mat to cover the blood from previous fights

LA Giant Corey Peterson

LA giant was a 7 foot tall guy with sketchy tats to say the least, and got beat the fuck out of by Sergei Kharitonov and was never seen again.

The life and times of Evan Tanner. From sleeping in dumpsters in hs as a standout wrestler to the World Title. To the desert.. His life is my favorite MMA story. Not a happy one either.

Always liked him. Wish he coulda kept it together. Guy trained HIMSELF how to fight by watching videos.

And replumbed his entire house with just a manual. His apartment had nothing but a cheap af bed and a Stack of philosophy books. He taught himself how to sail when not blacked out drunk. He could fix up a car, with a manual from the trunk. He was a special dude and he was only a selfish training partner cuz he had to be, to survive. I heard a woman broke his heart and that's when the alcohol took him. I wonder if that is true. When the youth he tried to help didn't work out cuz they were crazy drug addicted kids, I think he gave up. But nobody knows for sure. A very special guy who never got the love he needed or deserved as a child. And his demons caught up to him.

Its probably more complicated than anyone knows.

i dont understand hendo's logic. did he win the desicion because he bought a slice too?
The winner of a fight shouldn't be sent home in an ambulance and the loser shouldn't walk away just fine.

Former ufc middleweight champ Evan tanner went on a trip in the dessert and did not return. There were concerns even before he left, that it was a farewell trip, and that he never intended to return.

i can agree for the most part aside from limb hand or foot breaks.

I dont think that is true though. I really think he just ran out of water and didnt have the resources to make his way back out. The place where he had planned to refill the water was dry.

I remember them finding his bike and plenty of water. Maybe it was poor planning. But the fact that people did not think he was mentally capable at that time of making the trip says a lot.

Sometimes it happens that way.
