MMA forgotten stories thread

"The hot one" Yoshihiro Takayama had no prior mma experience before being thrown in with fujita, frye, schilt, and Bob sapp. His hotness lost all 4 fights but showed toughness and brass balls. He unfortunatley wound up paralyzed from the neck down on a botched wrestling move in 2017.

Its hilarious how stupid mma fans sound, when they think they are above pro wrestling, not realizing how intertwined and integral to its development it is and always will be. Those that decried the Japanese tradition must have pulled all their hair out when Lesnar,cm punk etc arrived on the scene ;) in the ufc

Ricardo Mayorga liked MMA and signed to fight Din Thomas but Don King got it squashed with some legal bullshit.

The interesting story of Bart Vale

"
When “legend” Bart Vale came back from Japan he became a popular figure by using some of the same techniques these shams did to sell merchandise and teach comic book readers mail order video classes that would get people beaten up in the cage. He had competed in an organization in Japan called Pro Wrestling Fujiwara Gumi. This organization was one of the first to adopt a realistic style of sports entertainment that simulated shoot fighting. It was like a scripted Pancrase style fight with a predetermined winner. Something Vale forgot to mention when he came back home.

The internet wasn’t the debunking tool it was today and people like Vale could make these claims without much fact checking. Hell, you could buy a belt back then and show it to someone with a story of a Russian tournament of 128 fighters that you won by knockout in the first round of every match and as long as you had the belt they would believe you. Frank Dux bought a trophy, fought in a tournament where they used a radar gun, and got a movie out of those claims. In this case, Vale brought back his scripted accomplishments and presented them as real which was dishonest, misleading, and downright evil."

I remember seeing this guy in Black belt magazine all the time, touted as the toughest of the tough.

The thing is unlike alot of the guys in the magazine who never would prove themselves in a real fight he started having a bunch of real mma fights in kickboxing and mma where he got his ass kicked...bad,

But at least he tried. Maybe he was delusional and believed his own hype,i dont know, but he had more balls than the rest of these guys who never tried to prove their claims.

You can do a scripted bout and not tell all the participants. Some of the guys in Pancrase for example claim to not have been instructed to do anything (i.e. take a dive). We're talking Rutten, the Shamrocks, etc.. I'm not saying this is necessarily the case with Vale, but if he knew everything was fake, why would he put himself in a position to get hurt if he didn't think he brought something to the table?

And nothing tops Ronda being fighter of the year on the cover of Ring magazine.

I heard something about that, they discuss it i think when Oliverira fought against Schembri i think
Serra also told this story on his podcast...so its just not a myth

Was the arianny and kongo story posted yet?

Also, lets not forget this man Andy Hug,for those who dont know, for those who forgot

Yeah...the Hug story is fucking terrible!
One of the greatest Karate and K1 fighters...ever.

Diagnosed with cancer and passed away 2 weeks later...

If you look at his last 2 fights, CroCop and some japanese dude, he already looked not good at all!
And like 2-3weeks later...they found this fucking thing in him...damn

Mayorga blew smoke in his face and fucking bitch slapped Din...
Lol that's straight out of some kung fu movie
Distracted then sucker punched

Can't make that shit up

John hackleman admitted they tried to avoid chuck fighting lyoto machida. "That fights all wrong for us"

Truthfully it made me want to see that fight if chuck had been closer to his prime.
That was relatively common. Before his fights with Shogun, Machida either beat you brutally, or made you look bad for three rounds.

He is in all real men’s hearts and memories
No for gay Takayama

Shogun had a fight at HW w mark coleman and broke his arm defending on a takedown. The ref notices and stops the fight, but Mark didnt see it and he cant understand what happened and is not sure whats going on. At this point Shoguns brother Ninja slide into the ring, and Mark, still in agression mode squares up with him. Things are about to simmer down when Wanderlei, who was in the crowd at the time, comes in to attack mark, but Phil Baroni who was cornering mark shoots on wand and takes him down, and then Mark steps on his neck.

Footage in link below.

Probably the most surreal moment in MMA for me as a viewer. Gotta love Ninja's kneejerk reaction to protect his brother

Ninja is such an underrated badass. Coleman was talking shit about "Little Ninja needs to stay down at 185 lbs" yet Ninja didn't hesitate to jump in there

Ninja has never been one to be intimidated by size tho. Ffs he took what was essentially a suicidal fight vs prime Kharitonov and came out balls to the wall

And of course this always gives me a grin:

Story by Eddie Bravo about Coleman:

Must've been after Mark lost to Pete Williams...at this time it was clear that Coleman is not having the best cardio and the game is evolving...

Bravo asked Coleman what he is doing different now, since the game is evolving?

Mark goes:"Bro, look down..."

Eddie looks down and realizes Mark is wearing sneakers...he looks at Mark...

Mark goes:"Now i run bro!...i am running now, bro!"

He told that story on one of the JRE Podcasts...

Yeah, I recall no ducking.
It's pretty similar too the "He's been ducking the Chael rematch for over 2 years" when Chael was suspended for one of those years.

Anderson suffered a shoulder injury shortly before he returned that required surgery and as soon as he recovered signed the contract for the rematch. All of which took place within 23 months.
