Social Minnesota middle school will eliminate 'F's to combat 'systemic racism'

2:32 in the video. 49% or less are "no longer used". Perhaps you should watch the video before saying others haven't.

Nothing in the OP is supported in the video.

The video discusses changing the way averages are weighted so that a zero on one incomplete test doesn't mean you automatically get a failing average.

It also said as the emphasis is on learning, students will be given an opportunity to retake tests.

And it pushed software that would allow parents to monitor their children's grades in real time so they would be aware of how they were doing, including failing grades and opportunities to retest.

There a lot of people who are very smart but received horrible grades in school. The grading system is fucked and i welcome any changes to it.
Lots of very successful people who didn't go to college, so let's scrap that too, amirite?

Nope. Other than you the WR posters in this thread get the “F”.
They read “systematic racism“ and “equity audit” neither of which were in the video and went all snowflake on us. They didn’t do their homework ie actually watch the video.

The right’s emphasis is on using government to punish. This policy is likely to yield better learning for students. No sense in critically thinking about the policy or watching the video when you can just make an uneducated zinger based on a knee jerk reaction to TS making this a racial thing.

Here ya go.

Dr. Wayne Kazmierczak, the superintendent for White Bear Lake Area Schools (WBLAS), was named Minnesota Superintendent of the Year this year. ......“Grading can be one of the largest areas in which systemic racism inequities are perpetuated.

didn’t you read it? There will be no failing grades and the superintendent of the year will get more awards because all his students are passing now due to his leadership

Failing at life and their education, not a f grade.

The point of school is to teach children how to learn. Hardly anyone uses more that 10% of what they learn in high school.

What's important is attitude and being on time IMO so I dont agree with them removing those two aspects from the grades.

As far as retaking tests who cares. That's how humans have been doing it since the beginning of time. If you fail you try again and again until you finally get it right. Imagine the world if humans tried once failed and were never allowed to try again.
Part of it is discipline. Which your likely going to need to succeed as an adult. Most people don't use a lot of what they learn in math, but it involves a lot of repetition and practice. If you can't show that you can do that for even half of the work then its something you need to learn to do before you grow up

Presumably, this is done to lower the gap between black/brown students and Asian/whites. If these retakes, etc are also available to the Asian students, wouldn't this just mean higher grades overall for the Asian students as well?

Besides...much of what school teaches you is the ability to work within a system, discipline, etc. How does getting rid of tardies, etc help in that regard? I could see maybe getting rid of homeroom/first period lates but for the rest of the day? Can't blame the parents dropping off the kid late there.

None of that is covered in the video, which only discusses how to better teach kids, get them to better learn using retesting and improved parental involvement with instant and complete web notification of test scores.

They mention changing averages of test scores by decreasing the weight of incomplete or "F" grade scores.

All of this is the product of an equity program, so you might be right about the motives, I have no idea. It's just a guess.

The most worthless piece of paper is a Public High School Diploma.

If you still have yours, might as well use it as toilet paper.

School choice is important for patents and students.

Working hard, husband and wife together in a nuclear family and being polite = Whiteness

Is that supposed to be bad?

Yay. More dumbass kids who will just fuck around during class and need remedial education. Just without the remedial.

A generation of dumbasses worse than the current batch is hard to imagine. Full idiocracy on the way

And we wonder why America is falling far behind China on the innovation curve.

I think it's clear we are entering an era of Fascist, domineering governments in the west. The less critical thinkers and intellectuals, the better - what these governments want are distracted, confused, uneducated drones to carry out the most basic of duties (ie - work, pay taxes, sleep). There's an element of engineering the future generations to be little more than obedient slaves.

How many people watched the video?

They're not eliminating failing grades. They're adjusting the scale so that grades below 50% don't have undue influence on the final grade average. They used an example in the video that explains the situation pretty clearly. Students will still get grades that reflect that they didn't learn the material. But if a student has an A on 2 pieces of material and a 0 on the 3rd, a grade of 67% doesn't reflect the students learning. By making 50% the lowest grade, it would change the average to ~83%. They feel that the 83% is a better reflection of the student's knowledge than 67% which is heavily influenced by the 1 incomplete assignment.

People can certainly still disagree with their approach but they should at least understand what they're disagreeing with.
