Microsoft acquires Zenimax Entertainment for $7.5 billion

Maybe there are some licensing issues for putting it on PC Game Pass at the moment.

Doubt it. They're probably gonna stack the Xbox GP to move launch units. After that wave is over, you'll probably see a more balanced release schedule

Oh', don't worry. They'll still gladly take your $70 for a purchase. I don't see the industry ever not selling games, but these subscription models are gonna become a bigger norm.
At least you can wait for sales if it's not a day one buy. But yeah, the subscription model is something I'm just not sold on yet.

It will continue to be up in the air to whether Elder Scrolls will be a exclusive.. but people are really deluding themselves if they think Microsoft will forgo the chance to make Starfield a full Xbox/PC exclusive..

Say it it gets a holiday 2021 launch date, that's a true system seller..

Pretty good write up. People are getting stuck in the old mindset of acquiring companies and exclusives. This is much, much bigger than that and Phil Spencer has said as much for a while now.

Ok this was the missing piece of the puzzle.

As I said previously I didn't really think the purchase was worth $7.5 billion based on the portfolio of games at Zenimax.. but the acquisition of this kind of tech puts that purchase in a whole new light.

IMO the acquisition isn't as much about the exclusivity deals at all. With this tech Microsoft could potentially put Xbox game pass on anything.

I figured it out two pages ago bro..

Of course, it's much bigger than basic exclusivity.. the entire business strategy of Microsoft with their gaming division is Gamepass, anyone with half a brain can see that.

But as with Netflix, with their original programming, you need stellar exclusive content to bring people to subscribe to your platform, and take that it to that next level. Elder Scrolls for example, I have no doubt would bring millions of subscribers to Gamepass if turns out in the end, it is exclusive to Xbox/PC..

You’re overestimating how many people will drop their current platform and purchase an Xbox because of exclusivity.

The audience they’d miss out on would dwarf whatever amount of people they could convince to come over. There’s over 150 million PS4 and Switch users out there, and counting.

When have I said for them to drop their current platform..?

The Series S will cater to those consumers, who want to get into the Xbox ecosystem/gamepass, at a very affordable price.. 299 dollars/249 in the UK at launch.

Great for a secondary console.. and that's without mentioning XCloud etc.

Lol, alright, let’s take your Netflix comparison. The entry cost to Netflix is what? $15? As opposed to $300 at a bare minimum for a console. That’s not just a nominal expense most people can drop at any time.

The closest comparison, which I’ve already made, would be if they locked their content behind only Samsung devices. Do that and suddenly you’ve lost countless customers.

They’re not going to reach the level of success they need and want playing this old game of exclusivity.

Of course PC get its later for no reason. Such bullshit.

And people are happy that Microsoft with their damn death grip on PC software is buying up more stuff to try and get that same status in the gaming industry. Fanboys are so insanely dumb.
Microsoft has an OS monopoly, but I'm not sure I would characterize that as a "death grip" given that the Microsoft PC gaming store is like #4 in the world, and would be swallowed up many times over by Steam.

Yeah, I just fear that they will try to get in that position in gaming too. Only potential competition with enough money is Google and Amazon, which would probably be even worse.

Apple and Tencent, too.

More like closer to 200 million, I think.

They need to drop another 100 off that for it to be a viable strategy. Even then, I doubt the numbers would add up save a minority of potential clients in the US.

In the next generation it will be Xcloud, Stadia, Luna, iWhatever by Apple and some chinese stuff by Tencent.

Sony and Nintendo will be the in lower tier selling consoles, or making games for them.

Isn't Stadia fucking DoA?

Like, to the point even giving away the system for free wouldn't allow them to recover.

Pretty much, that's what Google does anyway, kill projects.

Maybe they will launch Stadia 2, back from the fiasco.

The long term goal is getting as many people as possible on to Game Pass. Putting their Game Pass games on the PS5 for a short term profit is going completely against that.
