Is there a permanent writer strike, or is this just the result of studios hiring everyone's nieces and nephews who can't write so they just recycle existing stories and characters and switch out their race? Who is the audience for this?

don't they have some insane demands like a writing team must be made of x people and at least some must be minorities of some kind. you can imagine the quality of your writing if your entire talent lies in writing "white people bad, pay me"

I'm not comparing skin color to weight, I was responding to another guy who said Jordan wouldn't be believable as Hercules but somehow found it believable that Rocky was a HW boxer.

If someone told a bunch of African Americans "Well, Elon Musk is a fellow African American, and he's even from Africa to boot - why can't he be your role model for your community?" you would not be pretending to be this dumb as to why no-one would take the claim seriously.

This holds true for a HUGE number of the people arguing in here too. You absolutely know that skin colour matters in the current political context - for your side especially - but you pretend like it doesn't because doing so nets what you perceive as a political win when you walk up to someone concerned about Hercules being black and say "Come on now - nobody cares about skin colour swaps on historical characters... What's the big deal? A little racist, are we?" Change the direction of the switch and you're sharpening your pitchforks in outrage though.

People used to get less defensive about race swaps. Nobody made a stink about Red from Shawshank, presumably Irish, being played by Morgan Freeman. Nobody worried about Freeman being an unlikely fit for his role in Unforgiven, where it was just kind of glossed over that he was black. Movie after movie came out with racially tenuous or swapped casting and it wasn't a wide concern... Until people started to notice that, when a black character was made any other colour, there was uproar - and the same people cheered every time a non-white character was made black (or otherwise). After almost two decades of race swaps being overwhelmingly in one direction, and each instance of the other way being treated like it was a hate crime, people are just sick of it. It's naked politics that doesn't add to the story at all crammed in your faces when you go to get entertained - and it's fucking tiresome.

Let's see non-white communities start showing 1/100th the grace about race swaps going the other way and we can start to talk about why audiences are getting so pissed off about about the race swaps as they're happening now... But they won't. The communities that push this shit feel so damned entitle to swap any character they please while treating it as forbidden to swaps to go directions they don't like that a few companies will have to really feel it in their bottom line before anything changes.

Other than the fact that Hercules is a completely fictional demigod, and Mike Tyson is a real person who is still alive, making these two things not analogous at all, I would not care.

But a better analogy would be if a thousand years form now, whatever the human race became made a movie about a legendary and mythical American boxer named Mike Tyson, who was half God, but they got a Chinese guy to play him instead of a black guy, who tue fuck would care?
