Metal Gear solid/ Hideo GOATjima appreciation thread

Haven't played on any of the new platforms, but MGS 1 and 2 were awesome. 1 is the best for me. 2 was cool but the whole Raiden angle was a WTF - should have been playable as Snake the whole game.

Maybe, I hope I end up liking it, but like I said online games don't hold my attention for too long, maybe a few weeks at most. I'll see I guess....
 
I still need to play Peace Walker. I've got the HD collection though so it's just a matter of installing it.

I don't see how Peace Walker was more gameplay oriented than any other MGS game, with the exception of cutscene density(not that it didn't have plenty of exposure). Why does the less linear mission format equal more gameplay compared to a linear campaign? Nearly every aspect of the actual game mechanics was simplified compared to its immediate predecessor, and the level design suffered even more. MGS3 and MGS4 in particular may have been linear but there was enough variety in both the game mechanics and level design that any given situation usually had multiple ways of being approached. In Peace Walker there's barely any difficulty, enemies aren't much of a threat and environments are small and barren. It also did away with the novel and innovative gameplay scenarios that gave the series much of its reputation. Things like the battle with Psycho Mantis, or The End were replaced with giant bullet sponge mechs that didn't take much strategy to take down outside of running away periodically to refill your ammunition.

That's just my two cents though, I haven't played Peace Walker to completion.

I understand losing her as far as the story goes, but it's really dumb that there's no way of getting her back. Some people actually started a petition to get her back in a future patch or even as paid dlc

Maybe Snake Eater was the best, the story and setting was so beautiful. MGS 4 was great as well. MGS 2 was the first one I played and I loved it.

Base managment. Troop managment. RPG elements. Mini-games, etc. All combined with the traditional MGS gameplay. When you're playing PW, you're always busy doing a variety of things.

PW was loaded with gameplay. Not a knock on the traditional titles, but PW was more focussed on actual gameplay, than going from point A to B and watching a cutscene. The gameplay is tight as fuck in the traditional titles as well, but PW was good change, and I wouldn't be surprised if future titles borrow elements from it.

As far as some elements like level design and whatnot having to be dumbed down goes, it was a PSP game. Of course some sacrifices would have to be made. For what it is though, I think it's about as perfect as it can get.
 
Code talker mission is cheap as fuck. Spend 15 mins sniping those ****s just to have one spawn next to you and one-shot you. Back to Ds2!

You talking about the mission where you gotta fight the skulls? If so, use D walker with the mini gun. Battle is so fucking easy I felt like I was cheating, lol. Only problem is getting them off you long enough to get on D walker, also you can counter the Skulls with a well timed CQC attack right before they hit you with the machete, or just spam it when you think they are gonna jump at you.

My tactic before D walker was, counter their attack with CQC, then shotgun blasts to the face. Then when I discovered the D Walker easy mode trick, I just blasted them with that, saved one of the Skulls for fun, then countered and shotgunned the bitch down.

Is "MGS: Peace Walker" one of the most underappreciated games ever?

I honestly don't believe that MGSV would exist without it. It's just another notch on Kojima's belt, in that he could take what he learned from a handheld game, and fully realize those ideas and apply them to a AAA game in 2015. How many AAA games have actually been directly influenced by games created on ridiculously inferior hardware? I count 0.

Hug the side of the mountains! Don't stand still to scout their location. And just bolt it if they spot you. Eventually when you reach the mansion, the mist will clear.

And to add, if caught, constantly dive while sprinting. Make it hard to get shot.

So I just finished the game.....All I gotta say is HUH????

Edit: So there was a bit more after the credits and now I understand it, lol. Pretty much explains MG1 and MG2 however there is still the question of (see the bottom of spoiler tag if you wanna know)

Ok so that explained why the fuck Snake was such a bitch at the beginning of MGS5, lol. I was wondering why some guy was looking after him when he was Big fucking Boss, he should be able to take care of himself. Turns out the bandaged guy was Big Boss. Anyways, so the whole time you weren't playing as Big Boss at all, but some other guy (yourself pretty much if you entered your actual name, which I did).

I guess its a way of saying us, the fans are the Big Bosses I suppose. Here's the thing though, so the real BB was gonna have his face surgically altered to look like me. So does that mean that the real BB just disappeared forever? Does that change the history of metal gear and the BB in the other games is not really BB, but this random guy I created? I'm so fucking confused.

It did explain however how the results for Eli being his son came out negative, which I thought was strange when they said that. Anyways, the ending is something else, lol.

Edit: Ok so now I get how BB died in MG1 and came back in MG2. However I'm still confused about why the fuck Big Boss still looked like Big Boss, didn't he have the surgery to alter his face? I guess you can say he didn't, but why Kojima say he did if ultimately he didn't, shoulda just left that out and just say he changed his identity. I also liked the banter at the end between Miller and Ocelot, explains why they butted heads so much, crazy how Miller ended up hating BB and saying how he would help his sons so they could kill BB, and how Ocelot said the sons would end up facing each other, Miller saying he would help Solid, Ocelot saying he would help Liquid. This game kinda did tie everything together and fill in the missing gap.

Now to watch the behind the scenes disc and check out that mission that was cut out.

I also want to add that while the gameplay is fantastic, the boss fights or lack thereof was really disappointing, MGS is known for some pretty cool and creative bosses and there was none to be found other than Sahelanthropus, which was pretty much just blast him with your rocket launcher until he dies. Same could be said for most of the battles. Except for the Quiet sniper duel, which was pretty cool especially on extreme difficulty.

Oh, that part of the mission, I thought he was talking about the later mission, nevermind, disregard that advice for this particular mission. I did what the other person said. I used Quiet and she provided a good distraction and got some hits in while I got some more hits in with my sniper too. Quiet got fucked up and pulled out by miller though, lol.

The video on the last page has a pretty solid explanation and theory to how the ending pertains and makes sense to the rest of the Metal Gear Saga. I had a hard time comprehending and accepting the ending myself right after I saw it but the more I thought about it the more it made sense to me as it pertained to the Metal Gear Saga but it also makes me want to see remakes of the first 3 games especially the first 2 with a competent story.
 
I voted 4, cuz it referenced to 1, 2 and 3 during gameplay and made me remember how awesome those games were.

I'm far more interested in what direction the series would go if it was continued in the future. Would both Big Boss and the clone be in the MG1 remake renamed as MGS6? Or would Big Boss be in the shadows for the rest of the series until reemerging at the chroniclogical ending of MGS4?

Would Quiet make another appearance in MGS6, or 7? She was the most interesting aspect of this entire story. Or her presence in the series should be self-contained in this portion of the overall storyline? They'd just predictably kill her off, or do something cheesy like say she's the mother of Sniper Wolf.

Anyway, the game's story exceeded my low expectations. And view it more like a side-story, much like peacewalker or revangence.

Don't know if you saw the dialogue after the credits and the text that rolled before it, but Ocelot says the real BB is creating the true outer heaven, meaning its the clone you kill in MG1 and the REAL BB shows up for MG2 in outer heaven. During the text it says BB Phantom is killed by David, meaning the real BB shows up for MG2.

I agree with the Quiet part, I also think she was the most interesting part of the game, sexualization aside, lol. As for her, it can be assumed she died after saving Snake, she had the english strain of the virus, meaning when she spoke english she would get infected and infect anyone else around her that spoke english. Which is why she disappeared. If you recall, anyone infected ended up dying if untreated, Quiet was not gonna get treated so she's pretty much dead.

In the grand scheme of the series, this was actually a pretty good story and definitely tied together some things that didn't make sense and set up the rivalry between the characters. Was disappointed we never got to see Solid Snake though :( lol.
 
The 1st Metal Gear Solid is one of the finest gaming experiences I've ever had. Snake Eater is a close second. 2 and 4 are meh.

Gonna check out the video now that I've finished the game. And yeah, after seeing the parts after the credits, it all makes sense and it definitely ties it together as far as the whole series is concerned. I'm actually really impressed, there's some things about the game that felt either half assed or pointless, the man on fire for example, but overall I liked the story.

Definitely want to see remakes of the first two games as well, even more-so now, but only if Kojima does it. Which at this point really seems impossible, sucks, but I'd rather not have them, than have someone else butcher them.
 
The Psycho Mantis fight by itself puts 1 over the top.
 
Beat the Code Talker mission without even fighting the snipers, beat the following mission, now I'm on 30 or 31. The side missions are getting horribly repetitive but I like acquiring new personnel so I don't mind.
 
Except for The End being the GOAT boss fight of the series.
 
What's the deal with mortars and mounted machine guns are these of any use to Motherbase or should i just sell them all?
 
Snake Eater was best though I haven't played the first one and only like ten hours of 2. But out of the three that I've played through Snake Eater > Peace Walker > MGS4. Ground Zeroes was pretty great as little as there was to it.
 
I hate the missions that have time limits or force you to act quickly. I get their purpose but fuck man they still piss me off.

Also this is GOTY for me so far, having also played The Witcher 3 and Batman Arkham Knight. But I have a feeling Fallout 4 will overtake it.
