Metal Gear solid/ Hideo GOATjima appreciation thread

Ok, now onto the ending:

So it was obvious in the beginning you weren't Big Boss. But I didn't think you were the medic from Ground Zeroes. I figured you were either a 4th clone, or Solidus, or Decoy Octopus.

I know a lot of fans are outraged with the ending, but I like it. I really do. I think it fits in with everything Kojima has been writing about. I watched the ending to MGS4 for the 1st time in years last night. Big Boss says, "Under the right circumstances, anyone can take the identity of another."

Was this early foreshadowing? Also, the fake Big Boss is a precursor to what Ocelot would become. It's proof that subconsciously becoming another can work and it shows how he was able to trick himself into Liquid. It brings that plot point and the theme of identity full circle.

Everyone complains that this wasn't' the story of Big Boss breaking bad. But it was. We saw it. The entire point of his crusade was to create a military organization powerful enough for no country to ever defeat them. A safe haven for soldiers to always have a home. To never feel useless because of their government.

Why? Because Big Boss and the Boss were pawns for the U.S. government. This ideal was based on that fact. He promised himself he would never do that to any of his soldiers. And you know what? He did that to Venom.

Big Boss betrayed all his friends, all his soldiers, all his ideals for that last chance to create Outer Heaven. He used his own man as a pawn to carry out his goals just like what happened to him. He became a demon the second he decided on this.

This also explains how Big Boss survived Metal Gear 1. Because it was Venom in place of him. This makes Venom a tragic figure. He pledged his full loyalty to Big Boss's plan. He gave up his face and his identity for his dream to come alive. He even gets to live out his own dream of being Big Boss. That's why he smirks.

And what happened? Big Boss gets rid of him just like the gov got rid of the Boss. No one will ever know who Venom was. He'll go down as a nobody while Big Boss takes all the glory. That's why he smashes the mirror in the final seconds.

All his loyalty was nothing in the end as he realized he was the pawn the entire time. Everything he did was for Big Boss to steal. And he's the man who's meant to die by Solid Snake's hand. It's depressing.

Obviously, the twist was breaking the 4th wall. Kojima was telling us we were Big Boss all along. I wonder if this was his plan from the beginning. Even before the Konami debacle. It does feel like Kojima trying to tell the fans thank you for everything. It's his last message to all of us. And I'm happy with it.
They need to reboot all of this, and make Venom start a war against Naked

This game is unreal.

I think I got lucky on Metal Archaea. Beat it on the first try using an upgraded RASP. Pretty much stayed inside the open hangar with the broken plane in it and would peak and shoot. Skulls for some reason didn't really try to come in after the initial rush. After I tossed some frags at them hey just decided to stay outside and I just rekt them with the shotgun and dodged their lurker spike shits.

Used d walker with minigun for this one. The skulls are assholes.

Yeah, I saw the chapter 2 scene after the credits but it wasn't clear if chapter 2 started after the game ended (or not) or was going to be an expansion sold 12 months from now.

Never had a game roll full credits before the game was actually over before.

It's a Kojima thing, he did the same thing with Peace Walker when there was still some more story to be told and another chapter left. Chapter 2 has more story than Chapter 1, but the missions feel rushed, probably due to Konami cutting development. Still absolutely worth playing the second part of the game though.

Cost myself an S ranking on mission 41 by using a bombardment :-(

This is a long and complicated story. I think the only "must play" order, is 1-3-4. The rest is is nice, but mostly filler.

At the very least, play 3 before 4. You'll get the meat of the Big Boss/Solid Snake saga.

You guys gotta post how fun MGO is. I will have to live vicariously through you guys until January ;_;

I've neglected video games for a few years now, to the point where I've bought a game, just not had the time or motivation to play it, and ended up selling it on at half the price.

But I'm hearing more and more about amazing games and really want to get back into it.

The Metal Gear Solid series sounds like the kind of game i'm into, but I have no idea what order to get the games in.
People might say it doesn't really matter, but I have this weird thing where I need to play things in order or watch things in order, otherwise it just bugs me.

Does anyone know if there is a boxset of all the main MGS games?
I've had a look on Amazon and Wikipedia but there seems to be so many of them.

Been watching streams all morning. Still not up in the US.

One guy got to play as BB and was taking out dudes with the blast arm left and right. A few interesting things I noticed is that you take no damage to the feet, and a direct headshot is not an insta-kill so you have to shoot twice. Also, you have to be careful when stunning enemies and trying to fulton them, as members of your own team can be dicks and kill them while you're hooking it up.

You sir, are in luck.

And someone posted a link to an Ebay account that's selling it for $30. Hopefully you'll be able to find a similar deal in the UK.

As a huge MGS series fan, I highly recommend playing the major games as they were released... MGS1,2,3,4,Peace Walker. Then pick up MGS5 Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain.

Prepare for the best gaming marathon of your entire life, guaranteed.

If you have any questions, I and a few others would be happy to answer them.

Did anyone ever play those goofy MG card games on PSP?

Thanks!

I did see that set online but wasn't sure it contained all the games.
So is 'Peace Walker' the fifth game in the series, because I see you've listed MGS5 after that, so that's where i'm getting confused I think!

For my PC bros, is it possible to create a backup of your save and then revert back to it later? Normally I don't see why this would be na issue but idk how your online FOB is affected and shit. Anyone can confirm if there are no issues?

I just CQC'd the regular guys to death, then kept running-180-rocket shot-run-180-rocket shot over and over to beat the skulls. Needed like 4 supply drops to finish them.

Overall the boss battles in this game are terrible, save the Quiet fight.

As the graphic above states, each game is all over the place chronologically.

Trust me, it makes so much more sense to play them in order of their release, than playing them in order of the timeline.

If someone was to play them chronologically, they'd be going from the amazing experiences of MGS5 Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain, to the original Nintendo games for Metal Gear 1 and 2.

You'd be going from this...

To this...

And Metal Gear Rising Revengence is more of a side story, completely optional. Hell, I've never played it.

I agree. Sahelanthropus kicked my ass though, until I figured out how to use the vehicles.

Detailed on the MGS5 website, patch 1.04 features FOB insurance, allowing you to use MB Coins to protect your FOB:
Your FOBs are always at risk of coming under attack. Now, you can rest easy with FOB insurance (paid service). If you sign up for insurance, then during the insurance period you will be compensated for any materials and staff lost due to rival infiltrations.
Staff/materials stolen by the rival will in fact remain on your base, and an identical amount of staff/materials will be handed over to the rival instead.
Konami adds, “MB Coins are purchased with real money, but free MB Coins are also distributed periodically as login bonuses, etc.”

However, FOB insurance won’t cover nuclear weapons, wounded staff, staff used by you to deploy in defense of the FOB, or staff/items that are not fully your property, such as abducted staff being held in your Brig.

According to a NeoGaf user able to connect online, FOB insurance costs 50 Coins for one day, 100 Coins for three days, 200 Coins for seven days, and 300 Coins for 14 days, with a free 3-day trial also available. Putting that in perspective, you can buy 100 MB Coins for $0.99 or 550 MB Coins for $4.99.

Here’s everything else Konami included in today’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain update:
New “Event FOB” missions added!

  • Until now, only the FOBs of rival players could be infiltrated, but following this update you will have access to special “Event FOBs” prepared by the game developers.
  • In “Event FOB” missions, there is no risk of retaliation (no defending player will invade your base later as revenge), so you can steal materials and abduct staff without fear of repercussions.
New and improved missions for Combat Deployment (Online)! Rewards also get a huge boost!

  • Get ready for a broader, more varied range of missions available in Combat Deployment (Online). The rewards will diversify to match! Some missions may reward you with extremely high-rank soldiers, and others may provide rare medicinal plants such as Haoma and Digitalis (Lutea).
  • Additionally, the time it takes your units complete their mission can be shortened using MB Coins.
  • Note: Deployment time can only be shortened in Combat Deployment (Online) missions. Normal offline missions cannot be shortened.
New equipment added! A higher level of performance… Grade 7!

  • New weapons and items are on the way, to give you that added edge in missions. Additionally, where the highest possible grade of equipment was previously Grade 6 (★6), following the update you will have access to development projects of Grade 7 (★7)!
  • Some of the new weapons include S1000 AIR-S[★7], HAIL MGR-4[★7], and AM MRS-71 RIFLE[★7]
Night vision equipment can now be developed for your Security Team staff!

  • You will now be able to develop special NVGs for your security guards, to give them an advantage against night-time invaders and vision-restricting tactics such as smoke grenades. Don’t miss this opportunity to maximize the abilities of your Security Team.
Infiltrate without leaving a trace!

  • If you avoid being spotted by enemies, and refrain from killing/extracting staff and damaging/extracting containers and equipment, you can now play all the way through an FOB infiltration without the rival player being notified.
FOB expansion time reduction now available!

  • Constructing new platforms for your FOBs takes a long time, but now you can use MB Coins (paid service) to purchase time reduction and speed things up!
  • The more platforms on your FOB, the more difficult it will be for a rival to infiltrate unseen.
Improvements to on-screen UI elements and point scoring!

  • Following the update, there will be certain improvements to the way data is displayed on menus such as the Controls and Results screens; for example, detailed breakdowns of espionage points earned or damage suffered due to your FOB being infiltrated. Look forward to a tighter, more refined FOB Mission experience.
GMP and materials limits are greatly increased online!

  • Following this update, the maximum amounts of GMP and materials you can possess will be much higher than before, as additional amounts can now be stored online by the server.
  • Note: You will need to be online to make use of GMP or materials amounts that exceed the local limit (the limit when playing offline).
  • Note: While offline, you will not be able to make use of GMP or materials stored on the server.
Other changes

  • Improvements have also been made to other elements, including PF Rating, which indicates the strength of your Mother Base, and sort functions on the mission deployment prep screen.
  • Also, for auto-assigning staff to units, an option for prioritizing the Security Team has been added, to make FOB Missions even easier to enjoy. Various balance adjustments and bug fixes have been implemented as well.

Going through MGS 3 so far has felt incredibly fulfilling. Even though I've known what happens since it released (the episode of Cheat! that covered it is forever burned into my mind) the entire experience has been very fun.

Finished up The Fury and The Sorrow yesterday, am I getting somewhat close to the end?

Hopefully, the online transactions will provide the revenue Konami needs to finish the fucking game.

Have you fought the old sniper yet?

I thought the Skull Face mission was great. I would like to see more map designs like that and to a lesser extent the airport. A mix of outside and buildings with lots of enemies. Just beat that and Sahelnthropus. That fight was much easier than I expected. First time i got him to 10% but then he jumped to me and pissed hot fire all over me (didn't know he could do this) and I died. I was a little butthurt but whatever. Second try I basically did what I did the first time except when he jumped anywhere I would just start sprinting any direction.

Took this screencap and using it as desktop wallpaper now

The End or the end?

^ I did the same lol (Minnja), there were a few cool scenes where I got a screenshot of, was also planning on using as my wallpaper, but been to lazy to export to a usb drive.

There's also a cool one I grabbed of Quiet where she's holding a rocket launcher and a sniper rifle looking all badass.

So how is the new one compared to MSG4? I literally just got past act 3 on that one tonight. Bought it like 2 days ago, and I think I'm getting close to wrapping it up. I couldn't decide if I wanted to buy 4 or 5, but 4 was cheaper and I wanted to understand the plot better.

My only hatred for the series is the extraordinarily long cut scenes. Like holy shit long cut scenes. There have been times where I just gave up on playing and would sit down and do some work with the cutscene running in the background. It really bothers me when they do a 5 minute cut scene of him sneaking around when I could be doing that.

I just saw many missed opportunities for some really sick cutscene to player transitions that they didn't exploit like I thought they would. If this game had half of it's cut scenes turned into missions or fighting, this game would be my favorite game ever. Instead, it's only a top 10.

Did you order the Collector's Edition or Regular? And where?

Collector's Edition. Got 2 CE actually, one from best buy and one from Gamestop. The one that shipped was best buy, gs probably won't get here till later in the week.

That pay insurance is bullshit.

Agreed. I'm curious to see how console gamers will react to a Triple-A release adopting microtransactions.

I really hope they reject it. I hate the idea of most franchises adapting microtransactions.
