Media Merab: "Where is UMAR?!"

I've seen them spar more than a few times and Merab had a real hard time getting Aljo off of his back. Merab pretty much credits aljo for teaching him wrestling and bjj, and it showed when they sparred. This was a long time ago, though, and Merab is definitely the more improved guy over the past couple years for sure. But aljo of 5 years ago against Merab of 5 years ago? I wouldn't be so confident in Merab winning that one.

What was the timeline of this do you know? Like was this early UFC days merab, or later in his tenure? As by the time Merab was clearly deserving of a title shot and was putting it off to let aljo finish his reign when both were still at 135, I feel like he was at a point he would have beat Sterling had they actually needed to fight. But that being said I don't doubt that once Aljo did get his back that merab struggled with it, everyone struggled with Aljo's back control. I'm just not so certain he would have gotten that position consistently in a actual fight.

Why does Merab keep lobbying for easy fights? First he was demanding the O'Malley rematch over Umar, and now he's propping up Yan who he took down 50 times in one fight.

Yan is no doubt elite but a much easier fight stylistically than Umar who was beating Merab until he gassed. Say what you will about Umar but he's the only one that's shown any potential to actually meat Merab.

I do agree that Umar needs some more elite level wins first. He ought to be fighting Yan or O'Malley but that all depends on when his broken hand heals.

Umar doesn't deserve a title shot right now, now matter how good he looked in a loss. No one was lobbying for Khalil to get a rematch with Poatan even though he won the first two rounds.

Umar is without a doubt a good fight for Merab, but it is proven that he needs to work on his game more. Merab gassed him out, won three rounds in a row, and ended the fight emoting on an exhausted Umar. Umar got the fight relatively early in his career, perhaps too early, and need to get two good wins before we start talking about a rematch.

This excuse of "Oh he would have won had he not broken his hand" is pathetic cope, so I don't even give it credence.

Who else is Merab supposed to call out? If he beats Sandhagen, he'll have more or less cleaned out the division outside of who, Bautista and Song?

There’s a difference between avoiding a guy and preferring an easier opponent. Merab already beat Umar so he calls the shots, and Umar has some work to do before he gets another TS. That said, it’s pretty dumb for Merab to pretend like Umar wasn’t his toughest opponent in the last couple of years. Especially when he talks up guys who didn’t perform half as well as Umar, just sounds like him being a sore winner.
