The left has some kind of self-fulfilling prophecy in motion for the right to shift towards something that actually resembles fascism but it's still such a long way off. There are enormous institutional obstacles to getting there and problems that would need to be dealt with in academia, corporate media and finance in particular. They certainly wouldn't be Nazis though. America is an empty vessel of corporations, consumerism and toothless christianity (little c), the NSDAP Third Reich was a rabid ethnonationalist powerhouse of a very specific time, place and sociopolitical environment.
I agree that there still are safe guards protecting the USA from right wing extremism as that is what everyone is worried about and looking for. That said I see it going down like in Spain. Where a disparate group of right wingers hates the left so much and unites to fight it. While the left will murder anarchists and roll them over and then mass execute their own men when ever they lose. Spains fascism was a weird blend of royalist working class Catholics, and populist fascists plus a whole collection in-between.
The USA lacks those but I feel the left is pushing so hard and so much that unless elections get rid of them, then the right will create orgs and probably self defense vigilante groups which will morph into a broad group they will be harshly anti left.
