Scientists are like anyone else. They have jobs and it's probably fun to work on this stuff.

Military projects are compartmentalized as well so most people probably wouldn't even know what the final product is going to be.

Those that do, probably have a sense of patriotism thinking it will be used to defend their freedom or help handicapped people.

Of course, in the end all this shit is going to be turned on civilians but most people don't see that far ahead.
