And now I am out 3k to replace it and “bring it up to code”. This some bullshit but I ain’t have hot water in a month, so let’s go. My old one was about 14yrs and I fixed it twice already. So no choice now.

RIP.

Most new water heaters are shit. Do not expect them to last long. I legit have one from 1987. All of the plumbers or HVAC guys that I know say run that as long as possible. They say any of the new ones will be inferior.

We had to get one replaced a few years back. OUCH.

I work with a bunch of them. Everyone claimed they/we could do it but wifey is involved with this and wants it done “right” and warranties. So no go mi amigo.
Wifey needs a ladies night....... ya dig?

got 2 quotes for a 50 gallon and both were about 1500 but they have to bring the house up to code and install a water alarm, drip mat or something and earthquake straps and shit. So another 1k in labor. So 2800$ total
Please tell me you're getting more than one quote?

Welcome to the club, Buddeh.

My pipes exploded in my ceiling after Christmas. I paid to have the busted section replaced and it just made the pipes burst farther though out the house. Been with out water for almost 2.5 weeks and being told they're gonna have to redo the entire plumbing to find/fix the problem. I was also on vacation for some of this time, but still.

This is only loosely related, but the burst pipes thing just reminded me..

So I have a condo, and about 4-5 years ago I had to work out of state for 6 months to finish up a contract that my company had in Michigan.

I gave a key to one of my friends and had him stop by my place to check on things and grab any mail that might still show up. Once or twice he mentioned that my place was kinda cold, but when I asked him if it seemed cold enough to worry about he said no. So I thought nothing of it.

Fast forward to April when I get home. It's cool still, and I check the thermostat. It was turned all the way down. For reference, I live in fucking Minnesota and this was a year we had a polar vortex roll through. Miraculously though, I had no issues.

Then I found out that both of my neighbors on each side had their pipes burst on the sides near my apartment. I'm positive it was because of me. Somehow, nobody ever put it together.

I just got the two from the two biggest companies out here. I bet I could have found someone cheaper and even let my coworkers put it in but wifey want the name and warranty “just Incase”.
That's where she's wrong. You get a good independent plumber. That dude will always hustle for his customers. Especially to retain that business. My guy just did my new water heater for $700. And I have his personal phone number. Hell....he even calls to check in sometimes and to let him know if I need anything.

it is...

A 40-gallon water heater effectively meets the needs of a home with two people, and it costs around $320 to $1,600. For homes with five people or more, you may need to consider a 75-gallon (average price of $900 to $3,000) or an 80-gallon (average price of $1,000 to $3,200) water heater.1 sept. 2022

Gas water heaters are significantly more expensive, and some homes use the water heater to for heating which requires an even more expensive unit.

I replaced an electric one 2 years ago with shark bite fittings , all good . The biggest issue was getting the tank out , you drain it with a garden hose and then get it out onto a moving dolly . Try not to damage the emergency drain pan but if you do then buy another . Earth quake strap is easy with metal strapping . Our Tank was working fine because we are on a well with soft water , over 20 years old but the insurance company wants it replaced every 10 years . Insurance companies work on the worst case scenario pretty much and upcharge everyone so someone in Idaho is paying for tornado damage in Alabama. Shop around when buying insurance or getting a car repaired , get a quote in writing and tell them you are looking around for the best deal and don't need the premium stuff , it works .

Just buy one and install it yourself. And take the old tank to the scrap yard for some cash

What happened to Gino?
Dude was awlright in my book.
He was celebrating and sht posting about an innocent elderly man who got hit in the head with a hammer as he was taken hostage during a home invasion. The old dude laid in a puddle of blood and was snoring due to being cuncussed.
If you have double yellows probably not the best idea to race bait, spam memes, threaten posters, and promote misinformation about the innocent victim wanting "gay sex" in a thread like that.
Not sure how people think that because somebody quips weird jokes or says that they are religious that it outweighs the above.

@Smokes
glad u got hot water again, but that sucks that u got fucked by it not being up to code. feels like a seinfeld episode with mom and pop shoe repair store.

what was so not up to code for them? so if u just replaced it yourself or a buddy plumber, you wouldnt have do anything else? well hopefully it makes your home safer.

Gas line need to be longer, a water reservoir tank and few small things like earthquakes straps and water drip pan.

I could have had some friends help me just put it in and no get it inspected. People doing it all the time but since I am paying a company they have to have a city inspection and so it “Has” to be up to code. It’s some bullshit.
