Matt Lindland: Second Place Sonnen

Lindland had a good career. At one point, he was a viable contender. His problem was his chin and striking defense. Sonnen had the chin to come forward and take big shots. However, Sonnen never seemingly struggled through a bad predicament. If you had him in trouble, that was usually the fight. I mean, it's true, Sonnen tapped fast in that 5th round. He just needed to escape and stay on top. I think A LOT of fighters may not have gotten that far, but they'd have likely fought on and not tapped fast in that situation.

So did Shogun....

After having the crap beaten out of him for 10 mins and getting badly rocked, Sonnen folded as soon as serious punishment started vs Jones and Rashad plus IMHO looked like he was panicking in many of his sub loses.

Second Place Sonnen lololol

Loss Phael Sonnen (retired) Chailure to disclose.

Good fucking riddance.

Prime Lindland vs Anderson was a dream fight of mine, too bad it didn't happen... =/

At least Sonnen is a better fighter than Lindland, and doesn't resort to "skunk tactics" to get an advantage.

I have to say that I fully agree with that analysis.

Chael probably would have won the first fight if he stood the whole fifth round.
Im glad he didn't

You are correct, though I will add that his striking offense was even more of a liability than either his chin or his striking defense. Lindland threw punches like a girl--and I mean that in the literal sense of a completely untrained female whose punches resemble the swipes of a cat. It was embarrassing to watch Matt's feeble swatting technique.

Lindland was a silver medalist in the toughest sport ever of course he would give anderson huge problems but since none of you have trained a day in your life you wouldn't know

its no secret really (even for biggest chael nuthuggers) that chael is very weak mentally. he cracks way too easy under pressure. he has tools to win, but as soon as its not going his way he quits.

if you think about it danas score of 4 makes sense.

grappling = 6

striking = 4

mental toughness = 2

6 + 4 + 2 = 12/3 = 4

Doesn't seem that way to me, like Forrest I think Sonnen's mental toughness has been hyped enough to obscure the reality for many.

Yes because being a wrestler is a guarantee to give silva problems

Well realistically Silva hasn't fought that many high level wrestlers and both Sonnen and Hendo did take him down quickly.

Lindland in the mid 00's was arguably a far bit more dangerous than Chael on the ground, perhaps more vulnerable to being KOed as well although Anderson has generally had trouble timing strikes on guys trying to take him down.

99.99999% of every person that has ever held a job wished that they could have been 2nd best in the world on multiple occasions.

Meh Lindland had a lot success in wrestling but ultimately ended up in second place on the biggest stage just like Sonnen did in MMA. They were both great athletes imo

This... He was supposed to get the title shot but Tarrell upset him. I also believe this is why Tanner left Team Quest. Lindland was a top 185er for a while.

Maybe, but it's usually because he's almost in a dominant position. Chael fought through a heel hook against Babalu that had him screaming, didn't tap against Filho when he was on the verge of breaking his arm (though this is pretty debatable), and he endured a nasty cut that Nate opened up in their fight. I think that Chael is a pretty tough guy.

...and so did Shogun, and others as well. There's no shame in tapping. Only a fool thinks otherwise.

Ya you're right no shame in Chael tapping to strikes like this...
