Movies Marvel Studios in Crisis - A Variety Article

fuck superhero movies. cant believe that shit got popular in the first place. The only good one was Dark Knight. marvel is the taylor swift of cinema

At some point in time they probably went to more cookie cutter formula. I also think it hurts that there was such a vision for what they were building to in those first few phases and once End Game came out it was as though they’d achieved their mission but then had no real sense of where to go from there.

it’s tough to culminate with something as big as Infinity War (my favorite MCU film) and Endgame and then be like well let’s scale back again and then build up to something else in a few years.

DCEU tried to fast track to Marvel results and it went badly. The best DC films of recent years are ones like Joker and The Batman that have nothing to do with the other stuff. Scary thought but it seems at this point that MCU would be better off focusing on making good/interesting one offs rather than trying to tie all these series and movies together in an Avengers film that seems unlikely to recapture the original enthusiasm.

This. It's a bit like weight training. You can't just keep smashing PR's forever. Sooner or later fatigue will set in. So you build up to a peak, then take a deload, where you train with lighter weights and slowly build back up again.

After Endgame, Marvel should have focussed on street level heroes like Spider-Man, Daredevil etc. Make the Kingpin the Big Bad for that mini-Phase. When Fisk is taken down, tease that he was really working for someone else. Then slowly introduce the Fantastic Four, and eventually the X Men. Throughout those movies, drop Easter Eggs that there is a Big Bad pulling the strings behind the scenes. Eventually, this leads to the reveal of Doctor Doom, who has been manipulating both Heroes and Villains, and is finally ready to take an active role himself...

Well, yes; both have millions of fans and head up Billion-dollar industries. And if the rumours are true, Swift will be appearing in Deadpool 3. That's a guaranteed massive hit;)

Who would have thought, they made movies about the well written characters of the decades of marvel lore and made tens of billions... then decided to start churning out boring, political, girl power bullshit and the fans deserted nearly immediately, even with all the good will and long time established fanbase.

These clowns actually believe that all their viewers are woke, inner city asshats like the hollywood writers and stars.

These dickheads have basically destroyed Marvel and Star Wars already.

Edit: Fuck you autocorrect.

talk about reductive. but regardless of your blending stats w/ conjecture, i did not expect 66% female demo. so point taken there.

that said, most mcu movies, especially the big tentpole Avengers flicks, have a near 50/50 demo split. so it’s fair to say the notion that disney & the mcu is alienating their target audience is being completely overblown. the phase 4 & phase 5 (so far) movies aren’t really pandering to certain audiences anymore than phases 1-3 were. it’s a complete fallacy.

Well, I was specifically talking about "Barbie". The MCU is a bit more wide open. "Barbie" is decidedly made for the female demographic, just by default. It's been a product for females since it's inception, and it never tried to cross over in any way, unlike comic books that have always made efforts to cross over and broaden their appeal.

If anything, the MCU has a race discrepancy in their demo. Very, very white. Gen Z is also not very interested, apparently, which might actually point to their issues right now. People forget that it's been going for damn near two decades. It might just be case of the 15-20 year demo not being all that interested, and the rest being burned/aged out.

To be fair, Marvel tried to address the racial discrepancy. Black Panther was a huge hit with POC's in both America and other nations. They also made Falcon the new Captain America, although that series was not as well received.

Headline:

In Hollywood corporate offices, an A- CinemaScore and a $650m box office makes a movie a hit, but on this obscure karate forum, JOEROGANFAN69 isn't so sure

LOL such a pathetic argument.

You pointed out that IronMan was a great movie and then pointed out that Ghost Rider, both FF, and the X-Men movies sucked. Well no shit those movies weren't MCU and were produced by Fox. Now that the IP is back with Marvel and will be incorporated into the MCU then let's see how they do with them. I've been on records stating X-Men sucked ass (although I did like First Class). Why make a Firelord movie when you can make X-Men or even Silver Surfer (although I consider SS a boring character and not a good movie material)? i could see them making a Firelord/SS series though. But again it would depend on how the rest of the main IPs do.

As for the Marvel movies since Endgame they've been solid or misses - mostly misses. Again I am not disagreeing with the quality going down but even if they have solid writing I am barely interested. I personally need known IPs to rope me back in. Hell i can't even bring myself to watch the tv series at all. The only one I've seen is WandaVision (which I actually enjoyed) and the first few episodes of Captain Falcon (meh). Didn't even see Loki so I have no idea what is really going on in the tv series ~ nor do I really care...
my point was the popularity of the character isn't whats important. Iron Man was not popular regardless of how many people remember him from cartoons as a kid. That movie was a risk. its success was an eye opener. Spider Man 2 is a great movie (Sony). The comics are full of amazing material, they just can't half ass it.

For sure. The disparity is weird. Though I actually kind of like the Last Stand as mediocre as it is. Thought Grammer was a great choice for Beast and that the big battle delivered for the most part. Most other things fell flat. But I still liked it better than Apocalypse which I disliked to the extent that I didn’t even bother with the most recent one.

If you count The Wolverine movies as X-Men films there’s still that discrepancy. I think Origins is pretty bad and I know people like the one set in Japan (and I’m a fan of Mangold as a director) but I thought that one was dull as dish water.

But Logan delivered.

First Class, X2, and DOFP seem like the gold standard of the franchise.
Pretty much none of the X-Men movies hold up. Outside of the opening of X2 with Nighcrawler, which is goat level, only Logan stands as a truly quality X-Men movie. I can see argument for X, and X2, and parts of Days of Future Past, but they're really garbage.

Hopefully superhero movies trend die as soon as possible, but thread is unintentional goldmine

yeah, so sick of it<{Heymansnicker}>

the echo chamber you’ve locked yourself in literally sounds like a prison for the loneliest people on the internet

Eh, if they had actually used the fat comedian as Barbie (or race swapped her for Halle Bailey) you may have a point.

Barbie is a franchise for women and they kept 2 perfect looking blondes as the main stars. It wasnt woke as people claim it is, they actually gave their main audience something they wanted. The MsheU on the other hand is made for no one, women actually wanted to see the hunks that made the franchise a success not Captain Karen and green CGI woman.

Women were watching it for Downey jr, Evans, Hemsworth, Hiddleston and Boseman.

Avengers films are the Superbowl.

Phase 4 is the WNBA

Barbie is women gymastics at the Olympics.

Goddamn, this thread has gone to absolute shit lol.

Captain Marvel and Black Panther are among the top earning solo hero flicks, which considering their presence in pop culture leading up to their flicks was a fraction of the iron and spider mans is impressive. The numbers don’t really support your theory here.

They, like pretty much every other studio in the last decade, got caught up on the streaming wars and over saturated the market with content. It happened pretty much across the board of tv and film including reality series. This has nothing to do with “woke”.

Crisis at Marvel: Jonathan Majors Back-Up Plans, The Marvels Reshoots, Reviving Original Avengers and More Issues Revealed

MSM is just now discovering the.people online they've disparaged for over 5 years as racist/sexist/bigoted/homophobic/transphobic/islamophobic/blahblahblah have been 100% right about fucking everything.

And it only took a South Park episode to communicate all of it within a single sentence -

"Put a chick in it, make her lame and gay."

Uh huh, the reason why Captain marvel did well was because it was released in between two of the biggest movies of all time and was marketed as "If you want to know what is going on in End Game, you need to watch this" Notice years later, still no sequel... wait till se see how many hundreds of millions of they lose when this shitfight is released next month.

Black panther was a pretty good movie. Not their best but certainly better than anything in phase four... besides a single Spiderman Movie.

All their woke shit is garbage and they know it which is why they are looking at trying to get the original team back together. Iger just admitted they fucked up and are backing out of the culture war... good luck, too late. They destroyed Star Wars and Marvel, too bad, so sad.

Apparently they forgot at some point that the majority of their fans are straight dudes.

Nah, people didn’t spend billions to see captain marvel because it was some end game prequel they couldn’t grasp end game without. “Bu bu but…it made billions only because of its release date” is a huge stretch you’re only making because you want to hate on “woke” shit so bad any facts showing it can be popular you’re going to reject.

They saw it because they wanted to, just like Black Panther. Doesn’t matter how much you hate it, emotions don’t matter here, the box office numbers do and they prove it wasn’t diversity of leads that was an issue it was over saturation, just like the entire industry at the time.

Agreed, they forgot who their core market was, but the comics were headed this way beforethe movies. I collected Wolverine from 1989 until 2014 and then the greedy arseholes kept killing him off so they could pump out a shitload of variants to make money. I threw in the towel when they had a 7 comic run of the Death of Wolverine and, variants included there was something like 28 comics/variants in that 7 comic run. Then they brought him back as a female.... lost me forever and haven't picked up a comic since.
