Economy Man Dies of Asthma Attack After Inhaler Cost Jumps $500

- It's surprising how much rights americans dont have, for a suposed first world contrie.(no dig at you americans, but Tramp and Co)

So you might not be aware of this as a foreigner but America has two very differing concepts of freedom.

There's individual freedom and then there's economic freedom.

Economic freedom means businesses are free to fuck you over for their own profit.

Certain states and our current POTUS are much more interested in expanding economic freedom than personal freedom.

Huge problem. I have plenty of patients with asthma and COPD that need daily maintenance inhalers and all they can afford are those POS rescue inhalers with albuterol.

I’ve even had to fill out prior authorizations due insurance companies over nebulizer medicine to try and keep people out of the hospital. Who decided putting prior auths on breathing medicine was a good fucking idea?

Anyway that kid should’ve went to the ER. Breathing is more important than any bills he’d have gotten.

Even the rescue inhalers were the target of a massive scam a few years back.

The same assholes who make those albuterol inhalers lobbied the shit out of the FDA and EPA to ban aerosol albuterol inhalers for the sake of the ozone layer, even though the EPA's data showed that aerosol inhalers were negligible in terms of their environmental impact.

After spending a half a billion dollars on lobbying they succeeded in banning their own products so they could release a new delivery system with new patents for those cheap widely available inhalers while wiping all the generics off the market.

When the drug companies get involved in our government it's not to help people. It's to rob them.

Prescriptions aren't free in Canada either. I don't know how much this particular medication costs (google search says $45-$85 depending on the dose, compared to $55 from CVS quoted by a user on the 1st page). My cousin who is a type 1 diabetic has to buy all of his insulin and blood sugar testing kits out of his own pocket, for example.

I have multiple siblings with asthma and all I'm aware they have ever used is Ventolin (known by Albuterol in the US). Although this guy's asthma was perhaps worse than theirs. Or he wasn't avoiding the triggers.

Ventolin/albuterol is all most people with mild asthma need and just use it as needed. People with more severe asthma need the daily maintenance inhalers that have other types of medication in them.

health insurance wasnt a problem until the 80's, when they broke it down by managing, adding complexity to the system, money managers, fee for service, lawsuits to make a profit.

basically, the filth of society (insurers and lawyers) joined forces, and fucked over all of america, and continue to do so. the government is also susceptible to this, and we've seen it first hand with covid and gender butchers, however due to the nature of government and the somewhat slow to adoption practices and beauracracy, wild fast changes are less likely to happen, and price predictability stays stronger.

2/5 my kids have asthma, and all we've ever used was albuterol, we have some stocked up from elsewhere because of the red tape in america is bullshit. It's good having it around even though they are growing out of it, never know when an attack hits, losing breathing ability in a short amount of time can be fatal, the medicine is life saving, it should be widely available, low price, and a pharmacist should be able to provide ON REQUEST rather than a docs visit.

First Adair sucks new asthma guidelines came out in 2019
Second Adair might have a cash price that high but there are multiple laba/ics drugs (brio, symbicort, fuck me spellcheck is spasming at these so that’s all I’m listing) that don’t and would be on his plan. So he did no follow up of any kind.

UHG is garbage, but they don't deserve all the blame.
His Advair Disk inhaler was costing him $66 through his insurance. They quit carrying the Disk, and started carrying a more expensive brand, which he couldn't afford.
Instead of shopping around to find an inhaler from a different pharmacy, he just threw his hands up. GoodRX has the inhaler for $55 from CVS.
Almost every pharmacist I've been to is typically willing to educate customers on those prescription programs if you say that you're having trouble paying for something. Those prescription program cards/applications are in full view at every pharmacy I can ever recall visiting.

In addition to that, there are also medication grants low income individuals.

Symbicort and Breo both have generic versions that the insurance might cover. But I’ve seen a lot of negligence in both pharmacists and patients that didn’t reach out and tell me their inhalers aren’t affordable anymore. More so on the pharmacist because they should be able to see that the generic would be covered.

Poor guy! that is awful, and a sign of the times with out health care system.

I don't know from experience if it works or not, I don't have asthma but a nephew does, I read the other month about negative ions helping to either greatly improve asthma in patients. Some patients using a negative ion maker apparently even saw their asthma go away. Sounded to good to be true, but nevertheless thought it interesting considering how cheap negative ion makers can be to buy.
He should had smoked meth

I’m going to go out on a limb and say there’s more to this story, based on what I see all the time

My kids asthma dr told us once if they ask for more than 30 dollars call the office and we can work on getting you some samples. Some of those included an albuterol inhaler and prednisone.
Not really an alternative but mint oil can help open up restricted air ways.

- It's absurd. My mom gets all their diabets medicines for "free". Were in the process of getting her depression meds.
Also theres no risk of losing our home by missing a health bill.
