Magic the Gathering removes "racist" cards from its library

Historic sounds like something id like. I might actually have to check that out. Thanks dude

To be more specific

It's every card from Ixlan to the current set Ikoria, plus they release a new Historic Anthology from even older formats about every 3 or 4 months. The anthologies are about 15-20 "new" old cards from sets pre-Ixlan.

You can get the new anthologies with ingame currency too, though it's usually quite a bit, but not too bad if you're dedicated to playing for free and do all your dailies, etc.

If you want to be really competitive you can probably get just about 4 copies of every single good card for about $100-200 a year, instead of $300+ per deck in paper.

My explanation for their behavior is rooted in the company's explicit rhetoric. Your explanation for their behavior is rooted in a speculative conspiracy theory about the company's aim to exploit a controversy for exposure when that very dialogue carries far more potential for risk than reward. Just look at the calls already threatening those who would have perpetrated the conspiracy-- management-- to "diversity" their ranks; meaning many among them will have to be fired and replaced by non-white executives. Quite simply, Occam's Razor dictates my explanation is much more likely to be the correct one.

Another example of how your bias misleads you. This is plainly wrong. Look at this thread. Those who are Marxists or socialists are the ones disagreeing with me. They are also the ones cheering this maneuver.

This is yet more evidence that my reading is the correct one.
This time in many ways it goes deeper than simple 'green washing.' They aren't just virtue signaling which was what green washing started out as. Because Liberals actually believed in their own green washing. That became a cultural trend on it's own among white liberals and if you jumped onboard this trend as a minority then you could attain a level of 'whiteness.' Then when global warming lost it's trendiness and identity politics became trendy white liberals did a similar thing with 'white grievance' and cancel culture and if you are a minority that participates in cancel culture and alleviating white guilt then you attain a level of 'whiteness.'

That's why I brought up the Malcom X quote. Marxists agree with conservatives in that PC culture and white grievance is ridiculous white liberal bullshit, that's not anything new either.

Growing up the most racist people I encountered were actually PC white liberals and Conservative Minorities who had internalized their racism and identified with their oppresor.

See the issue Madmic is, I think, that you have a built in narrative in your mind you conjur up when you think of 'Marxist' that clouds your mind with a prejudice when you actually encounter them. The Marxists are typically the ones fighting for the ideals the conservatives complain about losing 20-30 years later. Which is why conservatives are often a sort of joke to Marxists.

The fact of the matter is, this is an insignificant issue. Anyone making it a big problem, such as the OP, hasn’t thought it through very fAr. The company can do what they want whether they genuinely believe it’s right or they’re pandering to a specific group.

It’s not your business, quit crying, use whatever brain power you can muster on something valuable. You’re wasting it on something you have zero control over and has zero affect your life.

Nut up, sally

yeah but this one takes the cake, you have to admit

this is almost as bad as the time Obama wore a brown suit, put his feet up on his desk in the oval office, and dared to put dijon mustard on his hot dog

Or that time Bill Clinton signed NAFTA.

When its done because of reactionary political reasons, its absolutely analogous. Remember, the Nazis had justification for all their book burnings too.

Except they are not burning any books. That would imply the government is taking other folks material and destroying it. This is a company volunteering to take some of their own property they don't think helps future branding efforts out of circulation. Nothing about these examples is the same.

Hence why its an analogy, and not literal.

Nope. Censorship comes in many flavors. It doesn't always need to come from the government.

Correct. They are self-censoring because the social justice came with the torches and pitchforks.

At this rate Dana White is gonna have to change his last name before the year is out.

Cardboard crack or eat my ass

Accept no substitutes

Fuck that.

I'd rather be able to play games at will using any cards or deck archetype in my boxer briefs for hours and hours.

The problem with paper magic is that it extremely limits how much you can play and what decks you can play and when you can play.

This is what happens when you appease a racist, radical leftist horde.

Pretty soon no ultimatum they can dream up is too unreasonable, and no fear that they may turns their ravenous hatred on you is unjustified. Gotta get ahead of it. Too bad. You already showed weakness, and the sharks smell the blood...

<Bottle.gif>

Fuck your gesture of understanding and empathy. You still have a job, bossman. It's not enough.

Is the card not racist to you?

Correct. They are self-censoring because the social justice came with the torches and pitchforks.

LOL, now any business choices to move in different branding directions is "self censoring".

Oh, they came at magic the gathering with torches and pitchforks? Can you provide links the mob that's been relentlessly attacking Magic?

Because this seems like a business choice they made on their own accord because they want press and to draw in a more diverse consumer base. Scoring a massive amount of free press simply by taking old, poorly drawn cards they weren't playing in tournies out of circulation is clever. I'm not sure who the victim here is supposed to be but I see you guys trying real hard to fill that role.

My slivers have put hands on everyone from Eldrazi to Tronboos. Control decks? Psha! My Cloudshredders will block out the sun.

Survive if I let you.

This was my reaction to opening this thread:

Was expecting some extremely vague and strained interpretation. But yeah no, that card doesn't really need to exist in a fictional game.
I feel the opposite, the card and the image aren't espousing support for prejudice but rather using it as a theme to articulate the mechanics of the card.
Interestingly last year a European game had the artwork redone for the US (after complaints) because of the specific history of American racial stereotypes.

Personally I looked at the cover and didn't see the issue.

...but then the "buck toothed Asian" stereotype wasn't really a thing here.
The new artwork didn't really change much.

The buck tooth design actually looks better but I don't blame them for changing it.

Imagine only playing one deck.

<Huh2>

The point of the card is to invoke intolerance (to other colors). I'm saying it's absurd that #woke culture is itself so intolerant it can't see that this isn't praising or encouraging racist values in real life. Otherwise, any card in the game that utilizes imagery which is immoral or oppressive should be considered similarly egregious, and out of bounds. This is a preposterous boundary for a fictitious game. Where does it end? By this benchmark one shouldn't be allowed to choose a dark side character in a Star Wars video game. This isn't just about a card game. It's about all games, all art.
