If finding out that a woman had to pay alimony to a man for the first time in decades was your breaking point, that's just...really odd.

I BTW was against it way before it became cool.
Doesn't matter man or woman. Its not all black and white. I'm just saying I hate that marriage can compell these situations. Marriage a way to skate legal obstacles like citizenship. To me it just sounds like a death trap though. And because so often they don't work.

Especially if I was the financial superior and did nothing wrong as a parent it'd suck ass to have to pay someone I'm already not getting along with

This maintaining lifestyle idea is such bullshit.

Nobody's entitled to a lifestyle.

The most anyone should have to do as the breadwinner is pay temporary alimony, to help transition your ex into supporting themselves. 5 years max, that's long enough to get a college degree and get started in a new career.

After that, your lifestyle is your problem.
Wanting the perks of marriage, without the marriage part. If you want your lifestyle maintained then stay married. If the marriage ends, the "lifestyle" ends.

Agreed. But I do understand temporary alimony so they don't wind up homeless.

I love how when this has happened to millions of men over the last 40 years it was perfectly fine apparently. But now that it's happened to Dern, something has to be done and the system is evil.
But of course. When a woman has to pay alimony or do some icky thing that men have done over the course of history it's a big issue.

Also one of the justifications is to facilitate split custody.

Let's say one parent has a lavish lifestyle and the other doesn't -- the kid might want to live with the rich parent, only because of the money. I think part of the reason behind spousal support payments with children involved is for this exact reason.

It’s somewhat amusing that in this interview they both act as if this is an entirely new concept to them that they had absolutely no understanding of until recently .
I still don’t understand why the system is set up this way , if I lose my job my lifestyle changes, but if you have intercourse with someone who makes more money than you and sign a government document stating that neither one of you will ever grow sick of each other’s company you are no longer obligated to work or even try to.

The law should be applied equally I see no problem with this. I pay child support and coparent and it's just a part of life. Just sat down with my daughter and new wife to our flight to Italy pretty excited.
