I didn’t see too many in the fifth round. Have to rewatch it. At some point Islam completely gave up on finishes and just wanted to hold position and wait for the timer to buzz.
If you think Islam wasn’t going for finishes, then you need to watch more grappling.
Did the same with Khamzat. He nearly ran through and finished everyone and then put on a dominant performance against DDP and then all of sudden he was a boring fighter even though it was the only time that happened.
Islam was setting jdm up on the ground most of the fight. He was just able to keep up. Some things islam was doing may not look like he's going for a sub but thats the point. At that level you have to be a retard to get subbed without a setup.
Agreed. Islam was going for D’Arce chokes, for arm-triangle chokes, for shoulder chokes and for kimuras.
He does have finishes, yet the fan perception is that he's still boring and for the most part people don't remember his fights.
Proof these are meaningless as Islam was trying to catch him with submissions.
If you think those were real submission attempts then we should count one heel hook attempt at the end of the first round for JDM too.

His first fight with Volk was voted as FOTY by a lot of people. That’s not based of statistics, that’s based off opinions.
Nah. It showed us how far behind his takedown defense was and it also showed us how good his submission defense was.
That’s literally not the perception of Islam, just another fake narrative. The perception has always been that he’s an entertaining fighter, in fact many folks made it a point to say he was the ONLY entertaining Dagi fighter.
