Goals & Gains Lug's Spear: Unleashed S&P

Do it! Both of the girls who were doing snatches at the gym today did have really nice asses though

Is that 8 weeks? Honestly I am somewhat worried about the whole culture shock thing. I learned in my ethnic minority psyc class that most people experience it one or two weeks after experiencing another culture. She said that some of her students who were with her in china felt a lot better after experiencing something from their own culture (in this case McDonalds). Keep that in mind if you start feeling homesick :icon_chee

The program runs from September-December so its four months. So yeah I hear ya on the culture shock...I am terrified that I won't like it and then I'll be stuck in Spain eating McDonald's all by myself. I actually waited to decide until I could find a place where I could lift...then I found a gym and a BJJ school...so hopefully that will keep me occupied! Being taught BJJ in Spanish...oh joy.

habla espanol?

Si senor! :icon_chee

Hey congratulations on a StW #, you are certainly in the company of some strong mo'fuckas. Also, I went to Ireland last summer, if you have the time you should definitely check out the west, such as the city of Galway, and natural areas such as Connemaragh (sp?), the Aran Islands, and the Cliffs of Moher.

That sounds interesting, the countryside is supposed to be very beautiful (according to my step-grandparents) so the driving will be very nice. Waterford is in southern Ireland so I am interested to hear what is in Kerry Country. I would much appreciate that! Are you avoiding Northern Ireland because of the troubles or just don't have enough time to see it all?

We're not hitting Northern Ireland because we don't really have time. I've also heard that the troubles aren't as big a deal since the Belfast Agreement was signed in 1998 though my Irish friend says otherwise. It gives us a reason to go back, as if we need one anyway.

Of the top of my head some of the cool stuff in the south is:

- Blarney Castle near Cork (you can go kiss the Blarney stone, lol)
- Jameson Distillery in Cork
- Ring of Kerry (South west coast)
- Dingle Peninsula (my friend says this is her favourite area of the south, also on the south-west coast)
- the town of Bantry, where St. Brendan is said to have left on his voyage to North America (maybe only I care about this one). I have to go so I can get my picture taken with my namesake's statue. The town is south of Killarney.
- St. James Gate in Dublin (Guinness brewery)

I've also been told by a number of people that I should try to catch some Gaelic sports while I'm in Dublin, specifically Gaelic football or Hurling. Gaelic Football sounds similar to rugby while Hurling is apparently a combo of field hockey, lacrosse and baseball. If you're interested in that you should look up the Gaelic Athletic Association. There might be a local team in Waterford that you could check out.

What did you do for the St. W's entry video?

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I am going to further look some of these up. Kissing the blarney stone seems like something you have to do when in Ireland.

I haven't actually submitted a video... but I did get assigned a number from the website. It seems like a good percentage of the members haven't submitted videos. I think I'll submit whatever comes first, a BW SOHP, 2.5xbw deadlift, 2xbw squat, or 1.5xbw bench.

135X10
225X5
275X3
275X3

Notes: Not a good lifting day. Extremely annoying...

BW X 12
BW X 12
BW X 12
-I decided to go with body weight because my core felt really tight already.

Notes: I only had 4 hours of sleep so I was less than motivated today. I decided to do some some power snatches to make it more enjoyable.

You're doing real oly shit. I hate you I hate you I hate you.

lol you shouldn't, I still need to learn what the hell I'm doing. I feel like I am starting to figure out the snatch, but I gotta go for more instruction.

Good lifting! Glad to see you're getting stronger. I'm jealous with the power snatch, i know part of it is having the guts to place that weight over your head.

Thank you, it really helps having people telling you what you are doing wrong. I've had one lesson in oly lifting and it paid off quite a bit. I decided to work with lighter weights for the snatch so I could focus on form. Hopefully a couple more lessons and I can start seeing where I am at on this snatch deal. The hardest part for me was the set up from the floor for the snatch along with moving from the deadlift part to the jump.

Oly Lessons

SNATCH
-I need to start writing these things down. I can never remember how many kilos I used... I think I did 5 sets of 3 and worked my way up to 105 lbs

C&J
-Work my way up to 115 I think? not sure. I think I got the split jerk thing down now.

Front Squat
-Worked my way up to 145, did two or three sets of triples with that.

Notes: Going to start recording what I did in a book or something.

That's awesome that you're keeping up with it. I'm jealous! Do you think its possible to learn these kind of lifts on your own? It feels like I would NEED someone to show me how to do it/correct me.

It's really fun and it doesn't hurt that the majority of the lessons come from a 27 year old woman with a lower back tat . The owner of the gym tells me that it's ok to train a couple days in a row so I'm going to go back tomorrow though I do like recovery days. I talked to some guy at my school gym who was doing snatches who said he was self taught. It seems like it would take a lot more effort to teach yourself, but I bet it's possible. Hopefully after I'm more knowledgeable I will be able to help you out with critiques, but I think that might be a couple months from now.

Haha...gotta love the tramp stamp.

I am assuming I won't be able to teach myself, so that'd be sick if you could help me out in the future. The lessons I took seemed to completely frustrate my coach. I kept curling the weight instead of jumping under it...no matter how many times he mentioned it to me, I kept doing it. Do you have similar problems??

What the people at the gym told me was to keep my arms completely relaxed for cleaning. What instructions did your coach give you when she/he told you to stop curling the weight? At first I thought I was using my arms too much, but the coaches told me I was doing fine with it and that the elbows bend naturally when cleaning the weight. It's still something I need to learn more about. I am much more comfortable snatching than cleaning.

Sweet! oly lifting rules, I need to do some!

Yeah man, it's great! Plus it lets me do more overhead stuff which I like to do even though I haven't done much of it in the past.

So Oly girl is into tats...

brb, getting TapouT tattoo across upper lats.

Yeah, I didn't notice exactly what the design was though. You might also want to pick up some hard drugs while you are at it, she was talking about tripping acid this weekend. I try not to judge though :icon_chee

Not much instruction today, one coach showed up at the end and helped me with C&J.

SNATCH
65X3
65X3
70X3
75X3
85X3
85X3
85X3
85X3
85X3
-Weight wasn't too heavy, it's still all about figuring out the form. I gotta work on keeping everything tight on the setup.

C&J
85X3
100X3
110X3
130X3
130X3
130X1
130X1
130X1
-This is the most I have ever successfully squat or power cleaned. It's a pretty good feeling.

FRONT SQUAT
45X3
130X3
146X3
155X3
155X3
155X2

Notes: The snatches made my elbows hurt while I was doing them, but that went away. Still going to icy hot the shyte out of them tonight. Hamstring on my rear leg from doing split jerks got tight when I did front squats, going to start wearing these knee sleeves since I got 'em. Pretty happy about learning how to clean, might actually be able to use the 45's now at my school gym.

Oly Lessons

SNATCH
-worked with light weight and focused on maintaining a tight back throughout the lift.

C&J
-same thing, worked on keeping a tight back with light weight.

FRONT SQUAT
-worked up to 135 and did 3X3, still pretty light.

Notes: Haven't done bench or DL's in a while so I'm going to try to sneak some in tonight for a second lifting session.
